Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

Requires a kernel version 6.15 through the fixed releases with BPF and the sched_ext (scx) infrastructure available, plus a local actor able to load and run BPF programs (CAP_BPF / effectively CAP_SYS_ADMIN). The specific trigger is a BPF program that calls bpf_cpumask_populate() with a destination pointer obtained from a read-only query kfunc such as scx_bpf_get_online_cpumask() - i.e., a borrowed const cpumask rather than a program-owned bpf_cpumask. Limiting factors: no remote vector (AV:L), no unauthenticated path (BPF-load privilege needed), unaffected on kernels without sched_ext/cpumask kfuncs or where unprivileged BPF is disabled, and no user interaction is involved.

Impact

This is a genuine but low-urgency, hard-to-reach local privilege-context flaw, not a widespread emergency. The CVSS vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:H, 7.1) correctly places it as local with some privilege required and no confidentiality impact - consistent with a BPF type-confusion that requires the ability to load and run BPF programs (effectively CAP_BPF/CAP_SYS_ADMIN). There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis, so all exploitation-probability signals point to zero real-world activity. The vendor rates I:H/A:H, but the actual primitive is a bounded bitmap_copy() write into a borrowed (read-only) cpumask the program does not own - a corruption/DoS-primary bug rather than a full integrity-takeover, so I assess impact closer to C:N/I:L/A:H (~5.0-5.5). Note a metadata conflict: the 'Information Disclosure' tag contradicts the vendor's own C:N (no confidentiality impact) - this is a write/corruption issue, so that tag is mislabeled. Net: real code defect, patched, but niche reachability and no exploitation signals make it a routine kernel-update priority, not a drop-everything item.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A local user with BPF load privileges (CAP_BPF) on a kernel built with sched_ext writes a BPF program that obtains a borrowed, read-only cpumask from a query kfunc such as scx_bpf_get_online_cpumask() and passes it as the destination to bpf_cpumask_populate(). Because the verifier accepted the wrong destination type, the bitmap_copy() writes over kernel-owned cpumask state the program should not be able to mutate, corrupting scheduling/online-CPU state and crashing or destabilizing the host. No public proof-of-concept exists at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 18, 2026

Linux kernel 6.15 and later (through 6.18.51 and 7.x before 7.2.6) let a locally loaded BPF program write through a borrowed, read-only cpumask pointer, because bpf_cpumask_populate() types its destination as 'struct cpumask *' instead of the expected program-owned 'struct bpf_cpumask *'. An actor able to load and run BPF programs - requiring CAP_BPF or effectively CAP_SYS_ADMIN plus the sched_ext (scx) cpumask kfuncs - can therefore have the verifier accept a const cpumask returned by a read-only query helper such as scx_bpf_get_online_cpumask() as a writable destination, corrupting memory the program does not own and degrading integrity and availability of the kernel. The vector is strictly local (AV:L, PR:L, UI:N) with no confidentiality impact assessed, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis; vendor-released patches are available in 6.18.52, 7.2.6 and 7.3-rc1.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Linux 6.18.52, Linux 7.2.6, or Linux 7.3-rc1 (or a later release containing the fix); alternatively cherry-pick the stable commits 0cfc9348a045da64955af2dd6902e66dfc7d6469, b7e2a5c6519adc73be55c3de2cb545e095a0fbc5 or 8740156ad33be5071b588b594c55f279457f667c, and track the advisory references at https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/0cfc9348a045da64955af2dd6902e66dfc7d6469 and https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-93112. Where immediate kernel updates are impractical, the effective compensating control is to remove the ability to load untrusted BPF programs: enforce sysctl kernel.unprivileged_bpf_disabled=1 so only privileged processes can load BPF, and restrict CAP_BPF/CAP_SYS_ADMIN to trusted administrators, since the bug is only triggerable by a loaded BPF program calling bpf_cpumask_populate() with a borrowed cpumask from a query kfunc - the trade-off is that this breaks legitimate unprivileged BPF tooling and observability agents. Additionally, avoid or disable sched_ext-based schedulers and third-party BPF schedulers on affected kernels, since the exploitable path depends on scx cpumask kfuncs being callable; the side effect is loss of sched_ext functionality. Because the issue requires local privilege (PR:L) and grants no confidentiality gain (C:N), it is not a network-facing emergency, but the integrity and availability impact (I:L/A:H under the assessed vector) makes prompt patching of multi-tenant or container-hosting kernels advisable.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw lives in the eBPF cpumask kfunc family used by the BPF scheduler-extensibility (sched_ext, 'scx') infrastructure introduced in the Linux 6.15 cycle. BPF kfuncs pass pointers across the verifier boundary with strict ownership semantics: mutating helpers are expected to take a program-owned 'struct bpf_cpumask *' (a PTR_TO_BTF_ID with an acquire/release reference), while query helpers return a borrowed, read-only 'const struct cpumask *'. bpf_cpumask_populate() performed its write via bitmap_copy() but declared the destination as 'struct cpumask *', so the verifier's type check no longer distinguished a borrowed read-only pointer from an owned writable one - a kfunc-argument type-confusion/improper-type-checking defect. The upstream fix retypes the destination to 'struct bpf_cpumask *', forcing populate() to follow the same ownership rule as the other mutating cpumask kfuncs, while query kfuncs continue to accept 'const struct cpumask *' inputs. Affected identifiers map to the generic kernel CPE cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* (listed twice by the source data), and the EUVD record (EUVD-2026-82220) tracks the same fix commits. One intelligence feed tags the issue 'Information Disclosure', but the assessed impact assigns no confidentiality loss (C:N); the exploit's demonstrated effect is an integrity/availability violation through an out-of-ownership write rather than a read-out primitive.

DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

bpf: Require a BPF cpumask for bpf_cpumask_populate()

bpf_cpumask_populate() writes to its destination with bitmap_copy(), but the destination is typed as struct cpumask *. That allows the verifier to accept borrowed cpumask pointers returned by read-only kfuncs, such as scx_bpf_get_online_cpumask(), as a writable destination.

Make the destination a struct bpf_cpumask * so populate follows the same ownership rule as the other mutating cpumask kfuncs. Query kfuncs continue to accept const struct cpumask * inputs.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A high-severity flaw in the Linux kernel's BPF subsystem allows a locally privileged user to corrupt kernel memory through a type-confusion error in the bpf_cpumask_populate() helper, potentially causing system instability or outages on affected hosts. Only systems running kernel 6.15 through 6.18.51 or 7.x prior to 7.2.6 are exposed, and exploitation requires an account already holding elevated BPF or administrative privileges, which narrows the realistic threat to insiders, compromised service accounts, and container workloads granted broad capabilities. Leadership should care because a successful attack degrades the integrity and availability of the kernel itself, meaning affected servers, hypervisors, and container hosts could crash or behave unpredictably even though no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.
