Network web UI, low complexity, PR:L for the required read-only grant, no UI; root-password reset and SSH-key install give full guest C:H/I:H and power-off gives A:H.

WebVirtCloud fails to properly validate permission flags in UserInstance grants, allowing view-only users to perform privileged actions. Attackers with read-only grants can power off virtual machines, reset root passwords, install SSH keys, and manage ISO images by exploiting the get_instance gate that only checks grant existence.
AnalysisAI
Read-only WebVirtCloud users can escalate to full virtual-machine control because the get_instance authorization gate in instances/views.py only verifies that a UserInstance grant exists and never inspects its permission flags; an authenticated attacker holding a view-only grant can therefore power off VMs, reset root passwords, install attacker-controlled SSH keys, and manage ISO images. The flaw is rated CVSS 8.7 (CVSS 4.0) and assessed as CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, meaning exploitation requires a low-privileged authenticated account with an existing instance grant, no user interaction, and is reachable over the standard web interface. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Requires an authenticated WebVirtCloud account that holds a UserInstance grant on the target VM, even a view-only (read-only) grant - the get_instance gate authorizes based solely on grant existence, ignoring the grant's permission flags. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a genuine authorization-control flaw (CWE-862) with a coherent, self-consistent signal set. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | No vendor-released patched version is identified in the available data, so the primary fix must be tracked rather than assumed: monitor the WebVirtCloud repository and issue https://github.com/retspen/webvirtcloud/issues/682 plus the VulnCheck advisory https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/webvirtcloud-missing-authorization-on-instance-control-actions, and upgrade as soon as a release that enforces UserInstance permission flags inside the get_instance gate (instances/views.py) is published; developers maintaining a fork should apply the equivalent code-level fix, making get_instance check the per-action permission flags rather than grant existence alone. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, audit all WebVirtCloud instance grants and immediately revoke view-only permissions from any non-administrative user; enforce least privilege by ensuring only trusted administrators hold any UserInstance grant. …
