Exploitation Conditions

Exploitable only when the application uses DotVVM's AuthorizeActionFilter as its authorization mechanism on commands, view models, or presenters (reflected in the CVSS 4.0 AT:P attack-requirement metric). For such apps there are no further limits: exploitation is remote, unauthenticated (PR:N), needs no user interaction (UI:N), and requires no special bypass technique - the filter silently allows all requests. Applications that instead use AuthorizeAttribute (the recommended workaround, which implements the same interfaces correctly) or another authorization filter are NOT affected. Affected versions: DotVVM < 4.2.11, 4.3.0-preview01 through < 4.3.15, and 5.0.0-preview01 through < 5.0.0-preview09-final.

Impact

Signals are internally consistent in pointing to a genuinely severe but not urgently-exploited flaw. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) and SSVC Technical Impact of 'total' both reflect that once triggered, an unauthenticated remote attacker gains full access to whatever the filter was supposed to protect - this is a total authorization failure (CWE-862), not a partial one, since AuthorizeActionFilter performs no check at all. However, exploitation is bounded by AT:P (attack requirement present): the target application must actually use AuthorizeActionFilter as its authorization mechanism, so the flaw is critical for affected apps but inert for those using AuthorizeAttribute or other filters. Real-world urgency signals are LOW and agree with each other: EPSS 0.44% (37th percentile), SSVC Exploitation:none and Automatable:no, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC. This is therefore a high-impact, patch-promptly issue rather than an actively-exploited emergency - its danger is silent (no bypass technique is needed, so vulnerable apps may already be exposing endpoints without any attack signature) rather than mass-exploited. Note a data caveat: the commit diff supplied in the intelligence (1635245b) is a FileUpload authorization/token hardening change, NOT the AuthorizeActionFilter fix described in the advisory - verify the actual fix commit against the GHSA before drawing code-level conclusions.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A DotVVM application uses AuthorizeActionFilter to restrict a sensitive command, view model, or presenter to authorized users. Because the filter's interface implementations return completed tasks without performing any check, an unauthenticated remote attacker simply issues the normal request to the protected command/view model/presenter and it executes - no bypass, token forgery, or special technique is required. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, but exploitation is trivial for anyone who knows the endpoint exists.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 16, 2026

Missing authorization in DotVVM's AuthorizeActionFilter causes any ASP.NET web application that relies on that filter to grant unauthenticated remote access to protected commands, view models, and presenters - the filter performs no check at all, so no bypass technique is required. All DotVVM releases before 4.2.11, the 4.3.0-preview01 through 4.3.15 range, and 5.0.0-preview01 through 5.0.0-preview09-final are affected; the vendor rates this critical (CVSS 4.0 base 9.2, independently assessed as CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H with high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact). Exploitation applies only where AuthorizeActionFilter is actually wired up (CVSS 4.0 AT:P expresses that attack requirement), and no public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified at time of analysis, with EPSS at just 0.44% (37th percentile).

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to DotVVM 4.2.11 (4.2 line), 4.3.15 (4.3 line), or 5.0.0-preview09-final (5.0 preview line) - the fix is published with the GHSA advisory at https://github.com/riganti/dotvvm/security/advisories/GHSA-c8qj-jx8j-fg2w and the release bundles at https://github.com/riganti/dotvvm/releases/tag/v4.3.15 and https://github.com/riganti/dotvvm/releases/tag/v5.0.0-preview09, so patch availability is confirmed rather than merely announced. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the vendor's documented workaround is to replace every use of AuthorizeActionFilter with AuthorizeAttribute, which correctly implements the same ICommandActionFilter, IViewModelActionFilter, and IPresenterActionFilter interfaces; the trade-off is that AuthorizeAttribute is marked deprecated for unrelated reasons, so the associated compiler warning must be suppressed or tolerated, and any host that constructs the filter through dependency injection or a global filter registration must be re-audited to ensure no AuthorizeActionFilter instances remain. Because the defect is a silent no-op rather than a crash, teams should treat absence of authorization errors as a red flag and verify affected endpoints by issuing an unauthenticated request to a command, view model, or presenter that should return 401/403 - until patched, exposure can be reduced further by placing ASP.NET Core authorization middleware or endpoint-level [Authorize] attributes in front of the DotVVM routes, recognizing that this duplicates policy logic and can drift from the framework-level filter semantics.

Technical ContextAI · show details

DotVVM is an open-source MVVM framework for ASP.NET web applications. Its authorization model is built around filter interfaces - ICommandActionFilter.OnCommandExecutingAsync, IViewModelActionFilter.OnViewModelCreatedAsync, and IPresenterActionFilter.OnPresenterExecutingAsync - which framework hosts invoke before static commands, view models, and presenters are processed. The AuthorizeActionFilter class provides explicit implementations of all three hooks but each simply returns a completed task instead of delegating to the underlying authorization logic, so the filter is a fail-open no-op. This is CWE-862 (Missing Authorization): the framework's extensibility contract is implemented in a way that silently short-circuits the security decision rather than failing closed. The parallel AuthorizeAttribute class implements the same three interfaces correctly and is the vendor-acknowledged substitute, which confirms the defect is localized to AuthorizeActionFilter rather than to DotVVM's request pipeline. The vulnerable package is the NuGet distribution of DotVVM, tracked as cpe:2.3:a:riganti:dotvvm:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*. Note that the diff excerpt supplied with fix commit 1635245b5eaf9ccf8e3536b9d8b1941819526585 concerns file-upload token hardening (signed FileUploadToken, AuthorizeFileUpload delegate, CSRF/view-model protector injection) rather than the authorization filter itself, so the exact authorization change should be confirmed against the vendor's commit set and GHSA advisory rather than from that snippet alone.

DescriptionCVE.org

DotVVM is an open source MVVM framework for web applications. Prior to 4.2.11, 4.3.15, and 5.0.0-preview09-final, AuthorizeActionFilter performs no authorization because its explicit ICommandActionFilter.OnCommandExecutingAsync, IViewModelActionFilter.OnViewModelCreatedAsync, and IPresenterActionFilter.OnPresenterExecutingAsync implementations return completed tasks instead of invoking the corresponding checks. Applications relying on this filter can therefore expose protected commands, view models, or presenters to unauthorized requests without any special bypass technique. AuthorizeAttribute correctly implements the same interfaces and can be used as a workaround. This issue is fixed in versions 4.2.11, 4.3.15, and 5.0.0-preview09-final.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A critical missing-authorization flaw in DotVVM can let unauthenticated remote users access protected commands, view models, and presenters in affected ASP.NET applications that rely on AuthorizeActionFilter. Organizations running affected DotVVM versions in externally reachable business applications should prioritize remediation because successful exploitation could bypass access controls and compromise sensitive operations, data, and service availability. Vendor patches are available, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis.
