Exploitation Conditions

The SubCategorys feature must be explicitly enabled in the Gallery plugin for the vulnerable code path in plugin/Gallery/view/Category.php to be reachable - this is a non-default or optional configuration that materially reduces the exposed population. Beyond that condition, exploitation requires the victim to click the Back navigation control that renders the unsanitized getBackURL parameter (CVSS 4.0 UI:P); the payload does not execute on page load, so fully automated drive-by exploitation without a phishing component is not feasible. The attacker requires no authentication (PR:N) and delivers the payload via a standard HTTPS GET request. Limiting factors in aggregate: (1) optional SubCategorys configuration must be active; (2) a human click is required; (3) impact is limited to the victim's browser session - no direct server-side compromise.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:L/VI:L/VA:N/SC:L/SI:L/SA:N) accurately characterizes the threat: network-reachable, low complexity, no authentication required, but contingent on a user clicking the poisoned Back link. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or confirmed public exploit code was provided in the available intelligence, and even a mid-sized municipal IT team in koszalin managing an AVideo deployment should treat this as a moderate-priority hardening item rather than an emergency. The additional precondition that the SubCategorys feature be enabled further narrows the exposed population. The realistic worst-case impact - VC:L/VI:L - encompasses session cookie theft, DOM-based credential phishing overlays, and malicious redirects, but does not directly yield persistent access or server-side compromise.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker identifies an AVideo installation with SubCategorys enabled, then constructs a Gallery Category URL with a javascript:alert(document.cookie) payload in the getBackURL parameter and distributes it via a phishing email or injected link on a third-party page. When a logged-in visitor navigates to the crafted URL and clicks the rendered Back link, the browser executes the payload in the AVideo origin context, allowing the attacker to exfiltrate the session cookie to an attacker-controlled server. No public exploit code is confirmed, but the vulnerability is mechanically trivial to reproduce from the advisory description alone.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 11, 2026

Reflected XSS in WWBN AVideo's Gallery plugin allows unauthenticated remote attackers to inject arbitrary JavaScript into victims' browsers by supplying a malicious payload in the getBackURL GET parameter targeting plugin/Gallery/view/Category.php. The injected value is echoed directly into an href attribute without HTML encoding, enabling javascript: URI injection that fires when a visitor interacts with the Back navigation control while the SubCategorys feature is active. No public exploit code or CISA KEV listing has been identified at time of analysis; the CVSS 4.0 base score of 5.3 appropriately reflects the mandatory user-interaction step that constrains mass exploitation.

RemediationAI

Apply HTML output encoding to the getBackURL parameter before rendering it into the href attribute in plugin/Gallery/view/Category.php; PHP's htmlspecialchars($getBackURL, ENT_QUOTES, 'UTF-8') is the canonical fix for this pattern and eliminates the injection sink. Update AVideo to any commit after c3edcc274c389816d434acadac07ee78eaf330c1 as referenced in GHSA-j2r3-gr47-rgfm (https://github.com/WWBN/AVideo/security/advisories/GHSA-j2r3-gr47-rgfm); no specific tagged release version is independently confirmed as patched, so administrators should verify their installed commit hash against the advisory. If immediate patching is not possible, disabling the SubCategorys feature in the Gallery plugin removes the only known vulnerable code path. Additionally, deploying a strict Content-Security-Policy header (e.g., script-src 'self') significantly limits the runtime impact of any reflected script by blocking inline execution and javascript: URI navigation.

Technical ContextAI · show details

AVideo (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:wwbn:avideo:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) is a PHP-based open-source video streaming and sharing platform maintained by WWBN on GitHub. The vulnerability resides in plugin/Gallery/view/Category.php, where the getBackURL parameter is taken directly from the HTTP request and interpolated into an HTML href attribute without any call to htmlspecialchars(), htmlentities(), or equivalent output-encoding functions. CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation - Cross-Site Scripting) identifies the root cause: untrusted user-controlled input reaches an HTML rendering context without sanitization. Because the sink is an href attribute, the most direct payload class is a javascript: URI rather than a conventional <script> tag injection, requiring only that the victim click the rendered link rather than merely viewing the page.

DescriptionCVE.org

WWBN AVideo through commit c3edcc274c389816d434acadac07ee78eaf330c1 contains a reflected cross-site scripting vulnerability in plugin/Gallery/view/Category.php when SubCategorys is enabled. The getBackURL parameter is echoed into an href attribute without HTML encoding, allowing attackers to inject malicious scripts that execute in visitors' browsers when they interact with the Back control.
