|
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires local access to the SCG host: specifically an operator account with SSH access to the appliance, OR the ability to compromise a service running inside the orchestrator container. The concrete enabling condition is the exposed Docker daemon Unix socket being reachable by that operator/container, combined with the Docker daemon running as root - allowing passwordless escalation to root. Limiting factors: the attacker must already have a local foothold (SSH operator credentials or code execution within a container); this is not remotely exploitable over the network (AV:L), and no user interaction by a victim is needed. |
| Impact | The CVSS 3.1 base score of 9.3 (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H) reflects a local vector with total host compromise and a scope change (container-to-host escape). There is an internal inconsistency worth flagging: the vector states PR:N (no privileges) yet the description requires a 'low-privileged operator with SSH access to the SCG host,' which is itself an authenticated foothold - so realistic exploitation needs an existing operator account or a compromised in-container service rather than truly zero-privilege access; I assess PR:L. That local prerequisite meaningfully lowers exposure versus a network-facing bug, but the outcome (passwordless root, container escape) is severe, so any organization running SCG should prioritize patching - even a mid-sized municipal IT team in zabrze should treat an appliance that brokers Dell remote-support connectivity as high value. No EPSS score, KEV entry, or POC was provided; there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and absence of KEV suggests no confirmed active exploitation, though the Docker-socket technique is trivially reproducible once local access is obtained. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A low-privileged operator (or an attacker who has phished/obtained such SSH credentials) logs into the SCG host and, without any password prompt, uses the accessible Docker socket to launch a privileged container that mounts the host filesystem, yielding root. Alternatively, an attacker who exploits a service inside the orchestrator container reaches the same socket and escapes to host-level control. No public POC is identified, but the docker.sock escalation is a standard, reliable technique. |

Local privilege escalation to root in Dell Secure Connect Gateway (SCG) 5.0 lets a low-privileged operator with SSH access to the appliance host obtain full root control without a password by abusing the exposed Docker socket (CWE-250, Execution with Unnecessary Privileges). Affected builds are the SCG Appliance prior to 5.36.00.16 and the SCG Application prior to 5.36.00.00. The same socket exposure also enables container escape: an attacker who compromises any service inside the orchestrator container can break out to host-level control. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis and it is not listed in CISA KEV, but the technique (writable/accessible Docker socket) is a well-known and reliable escalation path.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade the SCG 5.0 Appliance to 5.36.00.16 or later and the SCG 5.0 Application to 5.36.00.00 or later, per Dell DSA-2026-382 (https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-in/000503426/dsa-2026-382-security-update-for-dell-secure-connect-gateway-virtual-edition-multiple-vulnerabilities). Until patched, restrict and audit who holds SSH/operator accounts on the SCG host and treat any such account as root-equivalent; where feasible, remove or tighten group/file permissions on the Docker Unix socket (docker.sock) so non-root/operator users cannot reach it, noting the side effect that services or tooling depending on socket access may break. Also limit and monitor which services run inside the orchestrator container to reduce the container-escape avenue. Because exploitation requires local/host access, network segmentation and strict management-plane access controls around the appliance reduce the pool of potential attackers but do not remove the underlying flaw - patching is the only complete fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Dell Secure Connect Gateway is Dell's remote support/telemetry connectivity appliance, distributed as a virtual-edition image that runs its services in Docker containers managed by an orchestrator. The root cause is CWE-250 (Execution with Unnecessary Privileges): the Docker daemon's Unix socket is left accessible to unprivileged host users and/or reachable from within a service container. Because the Docker daemon runs as root, anyone able to talk to that socket can start a privileged/host-mounted container and effectively execute commands as root on the host - the canonical docker.sock escape. The vendor advisory DSA-2026-382 covers this among multiple vulnerabilities in the SCG Virtual Edition. No CPE strings were supplied in the input; affected components are identified only by the version strings in the description (Appliance and Application streams tracked separately).

2DescriptionCVE.org
Dell SCG 5.0 Appliance versions prior to 5.36.00.16 and Dell SCG 5.0 Application versions prior to 5.36.00.00, contains an Execution with Unnecessary Privileges vulnerability. An unauthenticated attacker with local access could potentially exploit this vulnerability, leading to Protection mechanism bypass. This vulnerability is considered critical because a low-privileged operator with SSH access to the SCG host can gain root-level access to the host without requiring a password by leveraging the exposed Docker socket. Additionally, an attacker who compromises a service running within the orchestrator container can access the same socket and escape the container boundary to obtain host-level control. Dell recommends that customers upgrade at the earliest opportunity.

Executive ViewAI
Dell Secure Connect Gateway (Appliance versions prior to 5.36.00.16 and Application versions prior to 5.36.00.00) contains a critical vulnerability allowing SSH users to escalate to full root control. Since SCG serves as the organization's security gateway protecting network perimeter and data flows, compromise of the appliance directly undermines perimeter security and could expose protected network segments and sensitive organizational traffic.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: (1) restrict SSH access to SCG appliances to authorized administrators only through network-level access controls; (2) enforce SSH key-based authentication with regular key rotation; (3) minimize and audit local user accounts on SCG appliances; (4) monitor Docker socket access patterns and privilege-escalation attempts in appliance audit logs; (5) implement network segmentation to isolate administrative access paths to SCG; (6) enable comprehensive audit logging and review it regularly; (7) subscribe to Dell security bulletins for patch notification.
