| Exploitation Conditions | No special conditions are required beyond network access to the registration endpoint. The vulnerability exists in the default configuration of SourceCodester Syllabus-Aligned Learning Management & Examination System 1.0 whenever the self-registration feature is enabled and publicly reachable. No authentication is required prior to exploitation - the flaw is triggered during the unauthenticated account-creation flow. Exploitation is limited to instances where the registration endpoint ( |
| Impact | The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/E:P) correctly identifies this as a remotely exploitable, no-authentication-required flaw with a public exploit. However, the scored VI:L appears understated: successfully registering as an administrator grants full integrity control over application data, users, syllabi, and examination records - an outcome more consistent with VI:H. The EPSS data is absent, but the combination of a trivial attack path, no prerequisites, and a public PoC published on GitHub elevates real-world risk above the 6.9 base score implies. KEV status has not been confirmed, so active exploitation is not established. For any instance exposed to the internet, this should be treated as high-priority due to zero-friction exploitation. The primary limiting factor is the product's niche academic deployment base. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 07, 2026
Unauthenticated privilege escalation in SourceCodester Syllabus-Aligned Learning Management & Examination System 1.0 allows remote attackers to register as privileged users - including administrator - by manipulating the role parameter in the register function of auth.php. Because the application fails to enforce server-side role validation during self-registration, any unauthenticated user can tamper the role field to claim elevated privileges at account creation time. A public proof-of-concept exploit is available on GitHub, lowering the bar for opportunistic exploitation.
RemediationAI
No vendor-released patch has been identified at time of analysis. The primary fix is to remove client control over the role field in the registration handler in auth.php: the server must always assign a default role (e.g., student) upon self-registration, ignoring any role parameter submitted by the client. As an immediate compensating control, restrict public access to the registration endpoint by requiring an invitation token or admin approval workflow - this prevents unauthenticated users from reaching the vulnerable code path. If the system is exposed to the internet and cannot be patched immediately, disabling self-registration entirely and limiting access to trusted networks via firewall rules is the most effective interim measure. Reference the public PoC at https://github.com/hackliu/Vulnerability-Reports/blob/master/Syllabus%20Aligned%20Learning%20Management%20Examination%20System/VULN-01-Unauthenticated-Privilege-Escalation.md to validate that any applied fix closes the exact parameter-tampering vector.

The affected product is a PHP-based learning management and examination system distributed by SourceCodester (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:sourcecodester:syllabus-aligned_learning_management_&_examination_system:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*). The vulnerability is classified as CWE-269 (Improper Privilege Management): during account registration, the application accepts a client-supplied role parameter in auth.php and persists it without server-side validation or enforcement of an allowlist. This means the web layer trusts the user to declare their own access level, violating the principle that privilege assignment must originate from authoritative server-side logic, not user-controlled input.
