| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated Craft CMS 5.x session (versions 5.0.0-RC1 through 5.10.10) with at minimum the replaceFiles permission granted on a shared asset folder. The attacker must know or enumerate a peer author's asset filename within that shared folder to construct the bypass request. No special network position is required - the attack is delivered over standard HTTP or HTTPS to the CMS backend. Limiting factors: the attacker must be a registered, authenticated CMS user (not anonymous); the targeted asset must reside in a folder where the attacker holds replaceFiles access; and the attack impact is constrained to file overwrite only - no arbitrary code execution or data exfiltration is achievable through this flaw in isolation. |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N, score 7.1) accurately characterizes this as a network-reachable, low-complexity attack requiring authenticated low-privilege access with no user interaction. The primary impact is high integrity (VI:H) - attackers can substitute arbitrary bytes into peer-owned asset files - with marginal availability impact (VA:L) and no confidentiality exposure. Real-world risk is moderate rather than critical: the attacker pool is constrained to already-authenticated CMS authors with replaceFiles permission on a shared folder, which limits opportunistic exploitation. In multi-author editorial environments, even a mid-sized municipal IT team in leszno managing a public-facing Craft CMS site would face meaningful content-integrity risk from a malicious insider or compromised author account silently corrupting published media. No public exploit code has been identified and the vulnerability is absent from CISA KEV, keeping real-world urgency at the moderate tier. The CVSS score does not overstate the risk. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated Craft CMS author with the replaceFiles permission on a shared media folder sends a crafted file-replace request that includes sourceAssetId and a targetFilename matching a peer author's asset, but deliberately omits the assetId field. The controller resolves the target by folder and filename after the permission check has passed, silently overwriting the peer's file with attacker-controlled bytes. The corrupted asset - an image, PDF, or downloadable document - is then served to end users from the public-facing site without any indication of tampering. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 02, 2026
Missing authorization in Craft CMS 5.0.0-RC1 through 5.10.10 allows an authenticated low-privilege author to overwrite another user's asset files in shared folders. The flaw in AssetsController::actionReplaceFile occurs because the target asset is resolved by folder and filename after the replacePeerFiles permission check has already executed - omitting the assetId parameter in the request causes the application to silently bypass the peer-replacement gate. The vendor released a fix in version 5.10.11; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Craft CMS 5.10.11, which corrects the authorization ordering flaw in AssetsController::actionReplaceFile per the vendor security advisory at https://github.com/craftcms/cms/security/advisories/GHSA-329j-cx85-8r56. If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, restrict shared-folder permissions so that only fully trusted authors hold the replaceFiles permission - removing untrusted or unverified authors from shared folders eliminates the exploitation path. As an additional compensating control, disable asset-replacement functionality for all non-administrative author roles until patching is complete. Note that restricting shared-folder permissions will interrupt legitimate collaborative workflows that rely on multiple authors editing a common asset library.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Craft CMS is a PHP-based commercial content management system identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:craftcms:cms:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*. The vulnerability resides in AssetsController::actionReplaceFile, which handles asset file replacement. Craft's permission model uses two distinct grants: replaceFiles (own assets) and replacePeerFiles (other users' assets). When a client request includes sourceAssetId and targetFilename but omits assetId, the controller resolves the target asset by matching folder and filename - but this resolution occurs after the permission checks have already evaluated. Because the check runs before the target is fully known, only the replaceFiles permission is evaluated and the replacePeerFiles gate is never reached. This is a classic CWE-862 (Missing Authorization) logic flaw where the security decision is made before the full scope of the operation is established, analogous to a time-of-check ordering error in access control.

2DescriptionCVE.org
Craft CMS versions >= 5.0.0-RC1 and < 5.10.11 contain a missing authorization vulnerability in AssetsController::actionReplaceFile. When a request supplies sourceAssetId and targetFilename but omits assetId, the target asset is resolved by folder and filename after the permission checks execute, so the replacePeerFiles permission is never enforced. An authenticated low-privilege author with only the replaceFiles permission on a shared folder can overwrite the content of a peer's asset file (located in the same folder) with attacker-controlled bytes. Fixed in 5.10.11.

Executive ViewAI
Craft CMS versions 5.0.0-RC1 through 5.10.10 contain an authorization bypass allowing authenticated authors to overwrite asset files belonging to other users in shared folders. Organizations managing content and digital assets through Craft CMS face content integrity risks and potential regulatory compliance violations if attackers with author-level access exploit this gap to modify or replace critical assets.
