MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | The only prerequisite is knowledge of a valid target customer uuid used in the URL path of PATCH /api/customers/:id; no authentication, session, token, or user interaction is required because the route is declared "access": "public" and no customer-session middleware guards it in versions before 2.2.1. Exploitation is limited in practice only by the attacker's ability to obtain a specific customer's uuid - these are not high-entropy secrets and, per the advisory, are exposed via order-confirmation email links and administrative URLs, so the limiting factor is weak. Non-default configuration is NOT required: default deployments of EverShop below 2.2.1 are affected. |
| Impact | All signals point to genuine high priority. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) reflects a network-reachable, low-complexity, no-privilege, no-interaction attack with high confidentiality, integrity and availability impact to the affected account - consistent with the described unauthenticated overwrite-and-read behavior. The single limiting factor is that the attacker must possess a valid customer uuid; however the description notes uuids leak through order-confirmation email links and administrative URLs, and uuids are per-record identifiers rather than secrets, so this is a weak barrier. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC flag was provided: the flaw is not confirmed as actively exploited and no public exploit is identified, so the risk is driven by ease of exploitation rather than observed in-the-wild activity. No signals are contradictory; the main uncertainty is exploitation prevalence in the wild, not exploitability. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker harvests a target customer's uuid from an order-confirmation email link or an exposed administrative/storefront URL, then sends a single unauthenticated PATCH request to /api/customers/<uuid> setting a new email and password. The server hashes and stores the attacker's password and returns the updated record in the 200 response, giving the attacker full control of the account while the original owner is locked out; because the vector is AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, no authentication, tooling, or victim interaction is needed and no POC is required to reproduce it. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 20, 2026
Unauthenticated account takeover in EverShop (all versions before 2.2.1) stems from the customer update API (PATCH /api/customers/:id) being declared "access": "public", which causes the admin auth middleware to pass every caller through and leaves no customer-session guard on the route. Any remote attacker who knows a customer's uuid can overwrite that account's email and password and read the updated record from the 200 response, hijacking the account and locking out the legitimate owner. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, but the flaw is trivially exploitable and the vendor rates it 9.3 (CVSS 4.0 critical).
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: 2.2.1 - upgrade to EverShop 2.2.1 or later, which changes the customer update route to "access": "private" so the endpoint requires an authenticated customer session (release: https://github.com/evershopcommerce/evershop/releases/tag/v2.2.1). Note that 2.2.1 is a large release that runs 31 automatic database migrations across 10 modules and includes breaking changes (React 17 to 19), so test the upgrade in staging and review the release's Breaking Changes / Upgrade Notes before rolling to production. If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, apply the same one-line fix locally by editing packages/evershop/src/modules/customer/api/updateCustomer/route.json to set "access": "private" (trade-off: hand-patching a source file must be re-applied on any reinstall/upgrade and should be verified against your version); alternatively, block or restrict PATCH requests to /api/customers/:id at a reverse proxy/WAF so only authenticated storefront traffic can reach it (trade-off: may break legitimate customer profile self-service if scoped too broadly, and must not be bypassable via alternate paths).

Technical ContextAI · show details
EverShop is a Node.js/React open-source e-commerce platform. Routes are described declaratively via route.json manifests, and an access-control middleware reads the "access" attribute to decide whether the admin authentication middleware enforces a session. In packages/evershop/src/modules/customer/api/updateCustomer/route.json the route was marked "access": "public", so the admin auth middleware simply calls next() without validating the caller, and no separate customer-session middleware was attached - the only middleware left in the chain is the JSON body parser. The updateCustomer.js handler then fetches the customer purely by the uuid in the URL path and writes back caller-supplied fields (hashing a password when supplied) with no ownership check. This is a textbook CWE-862 Missing Authorization / broken object-level access control (BOLA/IDOR-adjacent) defect: authentication and per-object authorization are both absent on a state-changing endpoint.

2DescriptionCVE.org
The customer update route in EverShop is declared with "access": "public" in packages/evershop/src/modules/customer/api/updateCustomer/route.json, which causes the admin authentication middleware to call next() without checking the caller, and no customer-session middleware guards the route; the only middleware in the chain parses the JSON body. The handler in updateCustomer.js then loads the customer by the uuid taken from the URL path and writes the supplied fields back to that record, hashing a password if one is provided, without verifying that the caller owns the record. An unauthenticated request carrying a known customer uuid can therefore overwrite that customer's email address and password and read back the updated record from the 200 response, taking over the account and locking out its owner. Customer uuids are exposed through order confirmation email links and administrative URLs. Version 2.2.1 changes the route to "access": "private".
Executive ViewAI
EverShop versions prior to 2.2.1 contain an unauthenticated account takeover vulnerability (CVE-2026-72843, CVSS 9.3) allowing attackers to remotely hijack any customer account by modifying email and password credentials without authentication. Organizations using EverShop face immediate risk of mass customer account compromise and account lockout of legitimate users.
