| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the sg-ai-studio plugin to be installed and active on the target WordPress site. The primary attack path requires at least Contributor-level authenticated access to the WordPress instance in order to obtain the sg_ai_studio_gutenberg_nonce, which is emitted only to users with block editor access. The officially assigned CVSS PR:N implies an unauthenticated path may also exist; this is not fully explained in the available description and should be verified with the vendor. Exploitation is limited to image uploads to the WordPress media library - it does not enable arbitrary file type uploads, code execution, or access to existing content. Sites with no Contributor (or higher) user accounts, or with the sg-ai-studio plugin deactivated, are not exploitable. |
| Impact | The official CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N, score 5.3) rates this as network-exploitable with no privileges required. However, there is a tension in the data: the description states the required nonce is emitted only to users with block editor access - a group that requires at least Contributor-level authentication - which would imply PR:L rather than PR:N. The unauthenticated exploitation path is asserted by the CVE description but the mechanism is not explicitly detailed; it may rely on the nonce being accessible via a public endpoint or page source. This ambiguity should be verified against the vendor advisory and source code at the referenced trac URLs. Impact is constrained to media library write access (I:L), with no confidentiality or availability consequences. No EPSS data was provided; no CISA KEV listing exists; no public exploit code is known. Real-world prioritization should be moderate: the capability restriction being bypassed (upload_files for Contributors) is a low-severity boundary, and exploitation produces no code execution or data exfiltration. Sites running multi-author WordPress installations with Contributor accounts face slightly elevated risk. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A Contributor-level user on a multi-author WordPress site loads the Gutenberg block editor, receives the sg_ai_studio_gutenberg_nonce in the page context, and submits a crafted REST API request to the plugin's image-upload endpoint including that nonce. Because the endpoint verifies the nonce but omits the upload_files capability check, the image is accepted and added to the shared media library - content a Contributor is normally prohibited from uploading. No public proof-of-concept code has been identified at time of analysis, but the attack requires only standard HTTP tooling and knowledge of the endpoint path. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 20, 2026
Unauthorized file upload in the AI Agent by SiteGround WordPress plugin (all versions through 1.2.7) allows attackers to inject arbitrary images into the WordPress media library by exploiting a missing upload_files capability check in the plugin's REST API endpoint. The endpoint's nonce (sg_ai_studio_gutenberg_nonce) is broadcast to all users with block editor access - including Contributors - making the absent capability check the sole enforcement barrier. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, and the CVSS score of 5.3 (Medium) reflects limited integrity impact with no confidentiality or availability consequence.
RemediationAI
Upstream fix available (changeset 3654622 in the WordPress plugin repository at https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset?reponame=&old=3654622%40sg-ai-studio&new=3654622%40sg-ai-studio); a released patched version number is not explicitly confirmed in the available input data - users should update to the latest version available in the WordPress plugin directory and verify the changelog confirms the authorization fix. As a compensating control if immediate upgrade is not possible, site administrators can deactivate the sg-ai-studio plugin entirely, accepting the trade-off of losing AI-assisted content generation features. Restricting the Contributor role from accessing the Gutenberg block editor (via role management plugins) would also remove the nonce exposure vector, though this significantly limits editorial workflows. Administrators should audit the media library for unexpected image uploads as an indicator of prior exploitation.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability resides in the plugin's REST API layer (core/Rest/Rest.php and core/Rest/Gutenberg.php), specifically an image-upload endpoint that performs nonce verification but omits the upload_files WordPress capability check. Under WordPress's permission model, the upload_files capability is intentionally withheld from Contributors to prevent untrusted users from populating the media library. The plugin's endpoint issues the sg_ai_studio_gutenberg_nonce to any user with block editor access - a group that includes Contributors - effectively pre-arming lower-privileged users with the credential needed to satisfy the sole remaining gate. The root cause is CWE-862 (Missing Authorization): authentication is partially enforced via nonce, but the authorization decision (capability check) is absent. Affected CPE: cpe:2.3:a:siteground:ai_agent_by_siteground:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* through version 1.2.7.

DescriptionCVE.org
The AI Agent by SiteGround plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to authorization bypass in all versions up to, and including, 1.2.7. This is due to the plugin not properly verifying that a user is authorized to perform an action. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to upload images to the WordPress media library, bypassing the upload_files capability restriction that Contributors are normally subject to, as authenticated attackers with Contributor-level access or above can satisfy the endpoint's nonce and permission checks. The sg_ai_studio_gutenberg_nonce required by the endpoint is emitted to any user with block editor access - including Contributors - making the absent upload_files check the sole barrier to exploitation.
