DescriptionCVE.org

NetBox 4.5.8 contains an ORM injection vulnerability that allows authenticated attackers, including those with read-only API tokens, to inject arbitrary Django ORM lookup expressions into nested object references by supplying crafted JSON dictionary keys in POST, PUT, or PATCH requests to any REST API endpoint. Attackers can exploit the unrestricted queryset used by WritableNestedSerializer to perform boolean-based blind data extraction of sensitive field values and bypass object-level permissions across all application modules including dcim, ipam, tenancy, virtualization, circuits, and extras.

AnalysisAI

ORM injection in NetBox 4.5.8's WritableNestedSerializer allows any authenticated user - including those holding only read-only API tokens - to extract sensitive field values across all application modules via boolean-based blind data leakage. By supplying crafted Django ORM lookup expressions as JSON dictionary keys in REST API write requests, attackers bypass object-level permission controls across dcim, ipam, tenancy, virtualization, circuits, and extras. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires a valid NetBox API token at any privilege level, including read-only tokens issued for monitoring or integration purposes - unauthenticated access is not sufficient (PR:L confirmed by CVSS 4.0 vector). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 score of 7.1 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N) accurately captures the realistic threat: the attack is network-accessible, low-complexity, requires no user interaction, and demands only a valid API token at any privilege level - a very low bar in environments where read-only tokens are distributed broadly. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker holding a read-only NetBox API token sends a PATCH request to an endpoint such as /api/dcim/devices/ where nested object fields contain JSON keys like {'field__secret_value__startswith': 'a'} rather than a plain primary key. By observing whether the API returns a validation success or error response, the attacker determines if the condition is true or false, then iterates through characters to reconstruct sensitive field values - extracting IPAM addresses, credentials, or restricted tenant data that the token's permissions would not normally expose. …
Remediation Apply the upstream fix from commit b3489cd529ca00703a0b7fe4c45e91539add6df6 (https://github.com/netbox-community/netbox/commit/b3489cd529ca00703a0b7fe4c45e91539add6df6) or upgrade to the first NetBox release incorporating PR #22013 - a specific fixed tagged release version was not confirmed in the available data, so monitor the project repository for the next stable release. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Within 24 hours, inventory all NetBox deployments to identify instances running version 4.5.8 or earlier, document current API token usage and permissions, and assess scope of potential data exposure. …
