DescriptionCVE.org

The MaxButtons - Create buttons plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Reflected Cross-Site Scripting via the 'view' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 9.8.5 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that execute if they can successfully trick a user into performing an action such as clicking on a link.

AnalysisAI

Reflected Cross-Site Scripting in the MaxButtons - Create buttons WordPress plugin (versions up to and including 9.8.5) allows unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary JavaScript via the unsanitized 'view' parameter, executing in the victim's browser context when a crafted URL is clicked. The flaw is traced to insufficient input sanitization in listController.php and maxbuttons-list.php, as confirmed by Wordfence and source-level references in the WordPress plugin repository. …

Attack ChainAIDerived

Hypothetical attack flow derived from CVE metadata

Access
Craft malicious URL with XSS payload in 'view' parameter
Delivery
Deliver URL to target via phishing or social engineering
Exploit
Victim (preferably admin) clicks link on WordPress site
Execution

Impact
Exfiltrate session cookie or perform authenticated action as victim

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation The attacker requires no authentication and no special server-side configuration - the 'view' parameter is processed by the MaxButtons plugin list controller in its default installed state on any WordPress site running versions up to 9.8.5. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 3.1 score of 6.1 (Medium) is consistent with classic reflected XSS: AV:N and AC:L confirm network-reachable, low-complexity exploitation, while PR:N indicates no attacker authentication is required. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker identifies a WordPress site running MaxButtons 9.8.5 or earlier, then crafts a URL embedding a JavaScript payload in the 'view' parameter pointing to the plugin's list controller endpoint. The attacker sends this URL to a target WordPress administrator via phishing email or forum post; when the administrator clicks the link while authenticated, the injected script executes in their browser, exfiltrating their WordPress session cookie or silently creating a new administrator account via an authenticated AJAX request. …
Remediation Update the MaxButtons plugin to the version corresponding to or newer than SVN changeset 3586921 (plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset?reponame=&old=3586921%40maxbuttons&new=3586921%40maxbuttons), which contains the upstream fix. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
