The SlideShowPro SC plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the plugin's slideShowProSC shortcode in all versions up to, and including, 1.0.2 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on user supplied attributes. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page.
AnalysisAI
Stored cross-site scripting (XSS) in SlideShowPro SC plugin for WordPress versions up to 1.0.2 allows authenticated attackers with contributor-level access to inject arbitrary JavaScript through the slideShowProSC shortcode attributes due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. The injected scripts execute in the context of any user viewing the affected page, potentially compromising session tokens, stealing credentials, or performing unauthorized actions on behalf of site visitors. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been confirmed at the time of analysis.
Technical ContextAI
The vulnerability exists in the SlideShowPro SC WordPress plugin's slideShowProSC shortcode handler, which processes user-supplied attributes without proper sanitization and output escaping. WordPress shortcodes are dynamically parsed from post and page content and their attributes are passed directly to handler functions. The vulnerable code at line 287 of slideshowpro_sc.php fails to sanitize or escape shortcode attributes before rendering them in HTML output, allowing injection of malicious JavaScript. This is a classic stored XSS vulnerability (CWE-79: Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation) where untrusted data flows from database-stored shortcode attributes directly into the DOM without filtering. The attack surface is limited to WordPress users with contributor or higher privileges who can create or edit posts/pages containing shortcodes.
RemediationAI
Update the SlideShowPro SC plugin to a patched version released after 1.0.2 if available; check the WordPress plugin repository for updates at https://plugins.wordpress.org/plugins/slideshowpro-shortcode/. If no patched version has been released, immediately deactivate and remove the plugin from affected WordPress installations to eliminate the attack surface. As a temporary compensating control pending patch availability, restrict contributor-level access to trusted users only and use a WordPress security plugin to monitor and audit post/page modifications for suspicious shortcode attributes. Additionally, implement web application firewall (WAF) rules to detect and block scripts injected via shortcode attributes on the output side, though this is less effective for stored XSS since the payload is already in the database. Review all posts and pages for slideShowProSC shortcodes with suspicious attributes and remove any malicious payloads.
