The Power Charts Lite plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'id' parameter of the [pc] shortcode in all versions up to, and including, 0.1.0. This is due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on the 'id' shortcode attribute. Specifically, in the pc_shortcode() function, the 'id' attribute is extracted from user-supplied shortcode attributes and directly concatenated into an HTML div element's class attribute without any escaping or sanitization at line 62. The resulting HTML is then passed through html_entity_decode() before being returned, further undermining any potential safety. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page.
AnalysisAI
Stored cross-site scripting in Power Charts Lite WordPress plugin versions up to 0.1.0 allows authenticated contributors and above to inject arbitrary JavaScript into pages via the 'id' parameter of the [pc] shortcode. The vulnerability exists because the plugin extracts user-supplied shortcode attributes, directly concatenates them into HTML class attributes without sanitization, and then decodes HTML entities, creating a persistent XSS payload that executes for all users viewing the affected page. No active exploitation has been confirmed, but the attack requires only standard WordPress contributor permissions and no additional complexity.
Technical ContextAI
Power Charts Lite is a WordPress plugin that provides responsive chart functionality through shortcodes. The vulnerability resides in the pc_shortcode() function (line 62 in the current trunk version) within the power-charts-shortcodes.php file. The root cause is CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation), where user-controlled shortcode attributes are not properly escaped before being inserted into HTML output. The 'id' parameter is extracted from the shortcode's user-supplied attributes using WordPress shortcode API functions, concatenated directly into a div element's class attribute, and then passed through html_entity_decode(), which converts HTML entities back to their literal characters-effectively reversing any attempted entity-based encoding and allowing injected script tags or event handlers to execute in the browser context.
RemediationAI
Update Power Charts Lite to the latest available version released after 0.1.0 immediately. The primary remediation is to upgrade the plugin through the WordPress plugin administration interface or by downloading the latest version from the WordPress.org plugin repository. If a patched version is not yet available, disable the Power Charts Lite plugin entirely until an update is released by the vendor. The underlying fix must include proper sanitization of the 'id' shortcode attribute using WordPress security functions such as sanitize_html_class() and proper output escaping using esc_attr() when inserting the value into HTML attributes. Do not rely on html_entity_decode() as a security measure.
