DescriptionCVE.org

The PZ Frontend Manager plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Missing Authorization in all versions up to and including 1.0.6. The pzfm_user_request_action_callback() function, registered via the wp_ajax_pzfm_user_request_action action hook, lacks both capability checks and nonce verification. This function handles user activation, deactivation, and deletion operations. When the 'dataType' parameter is set to 'delete', the function calls wp_delete_user() on all provided user IDs without verifying that the current user has the appropriate permissions. Notably, the similar pzfm_remove_item_callback() function does check pzfm_can_delete_user() before performing deletions, indicating this was an oversight. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Subscriber-level access and above, to delete arbitrary WordPress users (including administrators) by sending a crafted request to the AJAX endpoint.

AnalysisAI

PZ Frontend Manager plugin for WordPress versions up to 1.0.6 allows authenticated attackers with Subscriber-level access to delete arbitrary WordPress users, including administrators, due to missing authorization checks in the pzfm_user_request_action_callback() AJAX function. The vulnerable function lacks both capability verification and nonce validation when processing user deletion requests, enabling privilege escalation and account takeover attacks. CVSS score of 5.3 reflects the integrity impact; however, the true risk is elevated by the low privilege requirement (unauthenticated attackers can exploit this if they register a free Subscriber account) and the critical business impact of administrative account deletion.

Technical ContextAI

The PZ Frontend Manager plugin registers an AJAX handler (wp_ajax_pzfm_user_request_action) that processes user lifecycle operations without proper authorization checks. The root cause (CWE-862: Missing Authorization) stems from the pzfm_user_request_action_callback() function failing to invoke WordPress capability checks (such as current_user_can('delete_users')) or verify request authenticity via nonces before calling wp_delete_user(). This contrasts sharply with a similar function in the same codebase (pzfm_remove_item_callback()) which correctly implements pzfm_can_delete_user() permission validation, indicating the authorization bypass was an implementation oversight rather than architectural design. WordPress AJAX endpoints that lack nonce verification are accessible to any authenticated session, and the absence of additional capability checks means even Subscriber-level users-the lowest privilege tier in WordPress-can invoke the deletion endpoint.

RemediationAI

Users should update the PZ Frontend Manager plugin to a patched version released after 1.0.6 (exact patched version not confirmed in available data; check the WordPress plugin repository for the latest release). Immediate interim mitigation includes disabling or removing the plugin entirely if the patched version is not yet available. Site administrators should review user audit logs and restore any deleted accounts from backups, particularly checking for deletion of administrator accounts. Additionally, administrators should verify the plugin source code for the presence of the pzfm_can_delete_user() capability check in the pzfm_user_request_action_callback() function; if absent, the site remains vulnerable and the plugin should not be activated.
