6DescriptionGitHub Advisory
ChurchCRM is an open-source church management system. Prior to 7.1.0, an SQL injection vulnerability was found in the endpoint /MemberRoleChange.php in ChurchCRM 7.0.5. Authenticated users with the role Manage Groups & Roles (ManageGroups) can inject arbitrary SQL statements through the NewRole parameter and thus extract and modify information from the database. This vulnerability is fixed in 7.1.0.
AnalysisAI
SQL injection in ChurchCRM 7.0.5 allows authenticated users with 'Manage Groups & Roles' permission to execute arbitrary SQL commands via the NewRole parameter in /MemberRoleChange.php endpoint. This network-accessible vulnerability requires low-complexity exploitation with no user interaction, enabling complete database compromise including data exfiltration and modification. EPSS data unavailable, no CISA KEV listing indicating no confirmed active exploitation at time of analysis, though CVSS 8.8 (High) reflects significant impact potential. Patched in version 7.1.0.
Technical ContextAI
This vulnerability affects ChurchCRM's member role management functionality, specifically the MemberRoleChange.php endpoint responsible for updating user group permissions within the church management system. The SQL injection (CWE-89) occurs due to insufficient input validation and sanitization of the NewRole parameter before incorporating it into database queries. PHP applications like ChurchCRM commonly suffer from SQL injection when user-controlled input is concatenated directly into SQL statements without proper parameterization or escaping. The CPE identifier cpe:2.3:a:churchcrm:crm:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* confirms this affects the ChurchCRM application ecosystem. With CVSS vector components showing Network attack vector (AV:N) and Low complexity (AC:L), the vulnerability is technically straightforward to exploit once an attacker obtains credentials with ManageGroups permission, requiring only basic SQL injection knowledge to craft malicious payloads that bypass authentication checks or extract sensitive congregant data stored in the underlying database.
RemediationAI
Upgrade immediately to ChurchCRM version 7.1.0 or later, which contains patches addressing the SQL injection vulnerability in the MemberRoleChange.php endpoint. Organizations should download the patched release from the official ChurchCRM GitHub repository and follow standard upgrade procedures including database backup prior to migration. Review the GitHub Security Advisory at https://github.com/ChurchCRM/CRM/security/advisories/GHSA-66fc-v5xj-x859 for additional vendor guidance and release notes. As interim mitigation if immediate patching is not feasible, restrict network access to the ChurchCRM installation to trusted IP addresses only, implement web application firewall rules to detect SQL injection patterns in POST parameters, audit and minimize the number of user accounts with ManageGroups permission, and enable comprehensive database query logging to detect potential exploitation attempts. Post-remediation, conduct security review of database audit logs for suspicious queries executed through the vulnerable endpoint during the exposure window, particularly looking for UNION-based injection patterns, information schema queries, or unauthorized data modifications originating from accounts with group management roles.
