| Exploitation Conditions | Remote unauthenticated attacker sends crafted multipart/form-data HTTP request with many parts containing long backslash-escaped Content-Disposition parameter values to Ruby applications using Rack versions 3.0.0.beta1–3.1.20 or 3.2.0–3.2.5. No victim interaction required. |
| Impact | This vulnerability presents moderate-to-high operational risk for production Ruby web applications. The CVSS 7.5 reflects the severe availability impact (A:H) combined with a trivially exploitable attack surface: network-accessible (AV:N), low complexity (AC:L), and no authentication required (PR:N). Any public-facing Rack application accepting multipart uploads is vulnerable to resource exhaustion attacks. However, risk is somewhat mitigated by the absence of confirmed active exploitation (no CISA KEV listing) and no publicly available proof-of-concept at time of analysis. The attack requires crafting malicious multipart payloads but demands no special access or user interaction (UI:N), making automated scanning feasible. Real-world impact depends on application request size limits, timeouts, and rate limiting - services without these protections face higher risk of successful DoS. The availability of vendor patches in actively maintained versions (3.1.21, 3.2.6) enables straightforward remediation, reducing window of exposure for diligent operators. Organizations running affected versions should prioritize patching, especially for internet-facing services handling untrusted file uploads. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An unauthenticated attacker identifies a public-facing Ruby on Rails application running vulnerable Rack 3.1.15 that accepts file uploads through a contact form or document submission feature. The attacker crafts a malicious HTTP POST request with Content-Type multipart/form-data containing a single form field with a Content-Disposition header featuring a name parameter with 10,000 consecutive backslash escape sequences. Upon receiving this request, the Rack multipart parser enters a super-linear processing loop, consuming a full CPU core for several seconds while parsing the deliberately malformed parameter. The attacker scripts this request to repeat every second from distributed sources, overwhelming application servers and preventing legitimate users from accessing the service, achieving complete denial of service without requiring authentication or triggering traditional rate limits focused on request volume rather than processing cost. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Apr 02, 2026
Denial of service via algorithmic complexity in Rack multipart parser allows unauthenticated remote attackers to exhaust CPU resources by sending specially crafted multipart/form-data requests with backslash-heavy escaped parameter values. Affects Rack 3.0.0.beta1-3.1.20 and 3.2.0-3.2.5, a critical Ruby web server interface used across Rails and Sinatra applications. CVSS 7.5 (High) with network-accessible attack vector and low complexity. Vendor-released patches available in versions 3.1.21 and 3.2.6. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, though EPSS data not provided to assess probability of exploitation.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patches are available in Rack versions 3.1.21 and 3.2.6, which address the algorithmic complexity issue in multipart parameter parsing. Organizations should immediately upgrade to these patched versions based on their current release branch: upgrade to 3.1.21 if running the 3.0.x or 3.1.x series, or upgrade to 3.2.6 if running the 3.2.x series. For Ruby on Rails applications, update the Rack dependency in your Gemfile by specifying gem 'rack', '~> 3.1.21' or '~> 3.2.6' as appropriate, then run bundle update rack. For Sinatra and other Rack-based frameworks, apply the same Gemfile update process. After upgrading, verify the installed version with bundle show rack or gem list rack. If immediate patching is not feasible, consider temporary mitigations including strict request size limits for multipart uploads (reducing attack payload size), aggressive request timeouts for form processing (limiting CPU consumption per request), and rate limiting on upload endpoints (restricting attack frequency). Consult the official GitHub security advisory at https://github.com/rack/rack/security/advisories/GHSA-v6x5-cg8r-vv6x for additional vendor guidance and release notes.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Rack serves as the foundational web server interface for Ruby applications, including Ruby on Rails and Sinatra frameworks. The vulnerability resides in Rack::Multipart::Parser#handle_mime_head, which processes Content-Disposition headers in multipart/form-data requests. The parser uses a String#index search combined with String#slice! for extracting quoted parameter values, creating a quadratic-time algorithm (CWE-407: Inefficient Algorithmic Complexity) when processing escape sequences. Each backslash in a quoted value forces the parser to scan incrementally through the string, with prefix deletion compounding the inefficiency. For input containing n escape sequences, this results in O(n²) time complexity. The affected component handles standard HTTP file uploads and form submissions, making it widely exposed in web applications accepting user-generated content.

2DescriptionCVE.org
Rack is a modular Ruby web server interface. From versions 3.0.0.beta1 to before 3.1.21, and 3.2.0 to before 3.2.6, Rack::Multipart::Parser#handle_mime_head parses quoted multipart parameters such as Content-Disposition: form-data; name="..." using repeated String#index searches combined with String#slice! prefix deletion. For escape-heavy quoted values, this causes super-linear processing. An unauthenticated attacker can send a crafted multipart/form-data request containing many parts with long backslash-escaped parameter values to trigger excessive CPU usage during multipart parsing. This results in a denial of service condition in Rack applications that accept multipart form data. This issue has been patched in versions 3.1.21 and 3.2.6.
Executive ViewAI
CVE-2026-34827 affects Rack, a foundational Ruby web server interface used by Rails and Sinatra applications, enabling unauthenticated remote denial-of-service attacks through CPU exhaustion via malformed form submissions. Organizations running Rack versions 3.0.0 through 3.1.20 or 3.2.0 through 3.2.5 face immediate risk of service disruption from low-complexity attacks requiring no authentication. This vulnerability impacts any web application built on these frameworks and versions, potentially affecting customer-facing services and internal tools.
Apply vendor patch (Rack 3.1.21 or 3.2.6). If immediate patching is not feasible, implement rate-limiting and request size caps on multipart/form-data uploads at load balancer or WAF level; monitor CPU utilization for anomalous spikes during multipart request processing and alert on sustained elevated consumption.
