| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a valid authenticated account with 'member' or 'tester' role on a vulnerable emailflare instance; admin/super-admin are not needed and no user interaction is involved. Against pre-cf31f33 code the POST /api/inbox/compose handler performs no ownership check on the supplied |
| Impact | This is a moderate, real-but-bounded priority rather than a drop-everything emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) describes a network-reachable endpoint that is trivially triggerable but requires an authenticated low-privilege account (PR:L), so exploitation is gated to existing org members/testers - not anonymous internet attackers. Impact is confined to integrity (VI:H) with no confidentiality or availability loss (VC:N/VA:N), consistent with a sender-spoofing/impersonation flaw rather than code execution or data theft. The vuln.today priority of 'this_week' aligns with that profile. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis - the only code reference is the fixing commit, not a weaponized PoC - so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The Tags field says 'Authentication Bypass,' which conflicts with the description and CWE-862 (Missing Authorization): authentication is intact and required; it is the authorization check on the sender address that is absent. Net: a genuine abuse-of-trust/BEC-style risk for anyone running emailflare, but constrained by the authentication requirement and the product's very small deployment footprint. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Nov 03, 2026
Missing authorization in emailflare's POST /api/inbox/compose endpoint allows any authenticated user holding a 'member' or 'tester' role to set an arbitrary From address and have it passed unchecked into the Cloudflare send call, letting them send outbound mail impersonating other users or the organization to external recipients. Only outbound sender integrity is affected (integrity-only impact, CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N); administrators are not required, but the attacker must already hold a valid account on the instance. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the issue is not in CISA KEV; the practical exposure is further bounded because exploitation requires existing organizational access and the project is a niche, small-footprint deployment, making this a moderate this-week priority rather than an emergency.
RemediationAI
The vendor fix is upstream commit cf31f33bbb4a324d5353b8a5db0312fedc19618f (https://github.com/0xdps/emailflare/commit/cf31f33bbb4a324d5353b8a5db0312fedc19618f), which introduces verifyInboxSender() in packages/inbox-core and enforces it in the compose route; this is an upstream fix available as a commit, and a released, tagged patched version is not independently confirmed, so verify the state of your deployment against that commit rather than against a version number. Until the commit is applied, the effective compensating controls are reducing the population that can reach the flaw: audit and minimize accounts holding the member or tester role, since those are the roles the missing check affects (removing them removes the plausible attacker base, at the cost of collaboration features for those users), and constrain what outbound mail the Cloudflare send integration can emit, for example by limiting which sender domains and addresses are permitted to be sent through the configured binding, accepting that this may block legitimate senders until they are explicitly allowlisted. Review outbound From headers and Cloudflare email logs for messages whose sender does not correspond to an inbox the sending user belongs to, and note that the advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/emailflare-before-commit-cf31f33-missing-authorization-via-inbox-compose-endpoint should be tracked for any tagged release that carries the fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
emailflare is a Cloudflare-based email stack split into workspaces (email-core, inbox-core, inbox-worker/inbox-server), and the flawed component is the inbox-worker route defined at services/inbox-worker/src/routes/inbox/compose.ts. The defect class is CWE-862 Missing Authorization: the compose handler accepted the caller-supplied 'from' field and forwarded it to the Cloudflare email send call without verifying that the authenticated principal was entitled to use that sender address, so an authorization decision that should have gated the send was simply absent. The upstream commit cf31f33bbb4a324d5353b8a5db0312fedc19618f remediates this by adding verifyInboxSender() to packages/inbox-core/src/index.ts: it normalizes the From address, looks up a configured inbox via 'SELECT id FROM inboxes WHERE LOWER(email) = ?', returns 400 for senders that do not match any configured inbox, allows admin and super-admin roles to send from any configured inbox, and for member and tester roles requires a matching row in inbox_members before returning 200, otherwise returning 403. The commit adds corresponding unit tests (packages/inbox-core/test/sender.test.ts, packages/email-core/test/keys.test.ts) and, as adjacent fail-closed hardening, changes the API key schema default scope from 'global' to 'domain'. No CPE strings were supplied with this record; the version boundary is defined by the commit rather than by a tagged release.

DescriptionCVE.org
emailflare before commit cf31f33 contains a missing authorization vulnerability in POST /api/inbox/compose that allows authenticated members to send mail as any sender address. Attackers can supply an arbitrary from field, which is passed unchecked to the Cloudflare send call, to impersonate other users or the organization to external recipients.
Executive ViewAI
A high-severity authorization flaw in emailflare allows any authenticated user with a 'member' or 'tester' role to send outbound email impersonating other users or the organization, potentially enabling phishing or reputational damage. Leadership should care because this undermines sender integrity and could erode trust with external partners and customers, though impact is bounded to organizations running this niche platform.
Implement strict role-based access controls to limit who can access the compose endpoint, deploy a reverse proxy or API gateway to validate and enforce the 'From' address against the authenticated user's identity, and monitor outbound email logs for impersonation attempts. Apply vendor patch when available.
