Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires sending the victim a crafted GET request to any deployed CREST HTTP-binding endpoint with the _mimeType=text/html request parameter (accepted in the query string or x-www-form-urlencoded body); the unsanitized value is reflected into the Content-Type response header, causing the JSON body to render as HTML. The primary limiting factor is required user interaction (UI:R) - the victim must be induced to open the attacker's link - so the attack depends on social engineering. It is further bound to wrensec-commons json-resource-http versions < 22.6.2 and >= 23.0.0-M1 through < 23.0.0; no non-default configuration is needed since any deployed CREST endpoint is affected. The vendor's only listed workaround is to disallow the _mimeType parameter in both query and form-encoded bodies; otherwise upgrading to 22.6.2 or 23.0.0 is the fix.

Impact

CVSS 3.1 base 6.1 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated reflected XSS whose execution requires the victim to click a crafted link (UI:R), with scope change reflecting that the injected script runs in the user's browser rather than the server process. No EPSS score was provided and the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV, so there is no signal of active or widespread exploitation; the vuln.today decision label is 'this_month' (routine remediation), not act_now or emergency. No PoC or exploit-code reference appears in the input - only the GHSA advisory and the two patch commits - so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The real-world risk is moderate and consistent with the score: this is a genuine reflected XSS in a reusable REST framework (so it is exposed on every deployed CREST endpoint), but it is user-interaction-gated and limited to Low confidentiality/integrity impact with no availability effect, making it a this-month patch priority rather than a drop-everything issue. No CVSS-vs-description conflict is present; the description's mechanics match the AV:N/UI:R/S:C vector.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts a URL to any deployed wrensec-commons CREST endpoint appending the _mimeType=text/html query parameter and sends it to a victim via phishing or a malicious page. When the victim's browser follows the link, HttpUtils.prepareResponse() sets the Content-Type header to text/html from the unsanitized parameter, so the browser renders the CREST JSON response as HTML and executes attacker-controlled JavaScript in the victim's session. No public exploit code is referenced in the available sources, though the trigger is fully described in the vendor advisory.

AnalysisAIv1 – Nov 02, 2026

Reflected cross-site scripting in the CREST framework's HTTP binding shipped in wrensec-commons lets an unauthenticated remote attacker execute arbitrary JavaScript in a victim's browser by luring them to a crafted URL. The HttpUtils.prepareResponse() method copied the _mimeType request parameter straight into the Content-Type response header, so a GET request carrying _mimeType=text/html makes an otherwise inert CREST JSON response be parsed and rendered as HTML, with the injected markup executing under the originating site's origin (CVSS 3.1 base 6.1, scope changed). Only deployments of the json-resource-http module below 22.6.2 or in the 23.0.0-M1 through 23.0.0 range are affected, and exploitation hinges on user interaction - the victim must open the attacker-supplied link; no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and patch releases 22.6.2 and 23.0.0 are available.

RemediationAI

Upgrade org.wrensecurity.commons:json-resource-http to 22.6.2 (22.x branch) or 23.0.0 (23.x branch), which remove the prepareResponse() call from all CREST handlers so the _mimeType parameter no longer influences the Content-Type header; the corresponding patches are commits 65bbfd8c63c42e84ff7699aa5b82a22c08a12624 (23.x) and 5b50c64c14943b6f4d7faf996345e603956bae1d (22.x backport), documented at https://github.com/WrenSecurity/wrensec-commons/security/advisories/GHSA-4vhv-49g2-496q. If upgrading cannot be scheduled immediately, the vendor's stated workaround is to disallow the _mimeType request parameter in both the query string and x-www-form-urlencoded bodies at the front-end proxy or servlet filter layer; the trade-off is that any client legitimately requesting a custom MIME type from a CREST endpoint will lose that capability until the patch is applied. Because exploitation requires the victim to follow an attacker-supplied link, alerting users to the crafted-URL pattern and enforcing a restrictive Content-Security-Policy on CREST hosts reduces the chance that a reflected payload executes, but neither is a substitute for the fixed versions.

Technical ContextAI · show details

wrensec-commons is a maintained fork of the ForgeRock commons libraries, and its json-resource-http module implements the server-side HTTP binding of CREST - a JSON-over-HTTP request/response protocol used by identity and access management services. The flaw is CWE-79 (improper neutralization of input during web page generation): the binding's response preparation routine, HttpUtils.prepareResponse(), read the client-controlled _mimeType request parameter and used it verbatim to populate the Content-Type header, so an attacker could force a JSON endpoint to answer with Content-Type: text/html. Because the body remained the application's JSON payload, the browser would treat it as markup, and any HTML/script content an attacker can place into a reflected value or into a service-generated field becomes executable in the site's origin - hence the scope-changed rating (S:C) in the assessed vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N. The upstream fix (commits 65bbfd8c63c42e84ff7699aa5b82a22c08a12624 for 23.x and 5b50c64c14943b6f4d7faf996345e603956bae1d for the 22.x backport) removes the prepareResponse() call from the delete, read, query, patch, create, action and update handlers and stops the adapter from acting on the parameter at all, leaving custom MIME type handling to individual handler implementations. The trigger for script execution beyond the header rewrite is not described in the available sources.

DescriptionCVE.org

wrensec-commons contains a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the CREST framework's HTTP binding. The HttpUtils.prepareResponse() method used the _mimeType request parameter to set the Content-Type response header without proper sanitization. By sending a GET request with _mimeType=text/html, an attacker could cause the browser to interpret a CREST JSON response as HTML, enabling execution of arbitrary JavaScript in the victim's browser. The vulnerability is exploitable by tricking a user into visiting a crafted URL targeting any deployed CREST endpoint. The issue is fixed in versions 22.6.2 and 23.0.0.
