Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that RT auto-link URLs in HTML ticket content (the vulnerable default behavior) and that an attacker can add HTML content to a ticket. The highest-reach path is an RT queue configured to grant CreateTicket or ReplyToTicket to Everyone and to accept HTML email from the public - described as routine for public mail-handling queues - which removes any authentication requirement. The payload only fires when a user subsequently views the affected ticket's history (UI:P / passive user interaction), so a victim must open the ticket; the resulting script runs only with that viewing user's RT authority, not system-level access. On queues that do not expose CreateTicket/ReplyToTicket to Everyone, an attacker would instead need some account able to submit HTML ticket content, narrowing reach to authenticated users.

Impact

This is a stored (persistent) cross-site scripting flaw (CWE-79) in Request Tracker rated CVSS 4.0 base 5.3 (Medium) using the vendor/CERT-PL vector CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:L/VI:L/VA:N/SC:L/SI:L/SA:N. The network vector, low complexity, no attack requirements and PR:N are consistent with the description's unauthenticated email-to-queue delivery path, while UI:P (passive) matches the fact that the payload fires automatically when any user merely views the ticket history - no click is needed, only that someone opens the ticket. The low VC/VI and subsequent-system SC/SI reflect that the script runs with the viewing user's RT authority rather than granting full system compromise. Weighing the signals: the vuln.today Decision label is 'this_month' (not act_now or emergency), there is no EPSS probability supplied, no CISA KEV listing, and no proof-of-concept or exploit reference in the inputs - so this is a credible real issue but not an active-exploitation emergency. The main risk amplifier not captured by the base score is that queues accepting public HTML email (CreateTicket/ReplyToTicket granted to Everyone) are routine, which removes the authentication barrier and lets an outside attacker plant the payload; the main limiter is that an agent/user must actually open the malicious ticket for the script to run. Net: a genuine, patch-this-cycle XSS with realistic unauthenticated reach on public-facing RT queues, consistent with its Medium rating rather than an overstated high-CVSS-but-low-risk case.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker sends an HTML email containing a specially crafted URL to a public RT queue that grants CreateTicket or ReplyToTicket to Everyone. RT's auto-linking places the un-escaped URL into the ticket's HTML, breaking out of the link to inject a script. When a support agent later opens the ticket's history, the script executes in that agent's authenticated RT session and can act with their privileges. Given AV:N/AC:L/PR:N, the delivery is trivially reachable; no public exploit code is identified in the available data.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 30, 2026

Stored cross-site scripting in Best Practical Solutions' Request Tracker lets an attacker plant script inside a ticket, which then executes in the session of any RT user who opens that ticket's history. The flaw is in RT's automatic URL-to-link conversion for HTML ticket content, which fails to HTML-escape the URL it writes into the link, so a crafted URL breaks out of the address and injects script. Anyone who can add HTML content to a ticket can plant it - including an unauthenticated sender of HTML email to a queue that grants CreateTicket or ReplyToTicket to Everyone, which removes any authentication requirement (the assessed vector carries PR:N); the script then acts with the viewing user's RT authority, not system-level access. Fixed in 5.0.11 and 6.0.4; no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and no CISA KEV listing.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to RT 5.0.11 or RT 6.0.4, the versions in which this was fixed (vendor/CERT-PL advisory: https://cert.pl/en/posts/2026/10/CVE-2026-105454, https://requesttracker.com/request-tracker/). Because the unauthenticated reach comes from queues that grant CreateTicket or ReplyToTicket to Everyone while accepting HTML mail from the public, removing those Everyone rights on publicly mail-facing queues narrows the attack path to authenticated submitters - the trade-off is that mail from unknown senders will no longer open or update tickets automatically, so you need a moderated or authenticated intake route instead. Where those grants are unavoidable, limiting which accounts can post HTML ticket content reduces the set of possible injectors, but it does not help on the public-mail path. Viewers still trigger the stored script simply by opening the affected ticket history, and the supplied sources do not document a supported switch for disabling the URL auto-linking behavior that carries the payload, so these measures are partial at best and patching remains the complete fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details

CWE-79 (improper neutralization of input during web page generation) in a stored/persistent form. Request Tracker renders HTML ticket content and auto-linkifies bare URLs found in it; the URL string is placed directly into the generated anchor's address attribute without HTML-encoding. A URL containing quote or markup characters therefore terminates the attribute and injects arbitrary script into the page that RT builds when the ticket history is displayed. The payload persists in the ticket record rather than being reflected, so it fires passively on every subsequent view of that ticket - the assessed CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N) reflects network reachability, no privileges required, a user opening the ticket, and scope change because the injected script executes within the victim's authenticated RT session. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:best_practical_solutions:request_tracker with a wildcard version field identifies the affected codebase broadly; the vendor and CERT-PL advisories are the authoritative sources for the corrected branches.

DescriptionCVE.org

RT's automatic link creation for URLs in HTML ticket content does not HTML-escape the URL it places in the link. A URL crafted to break out of the link's address can add a script that runs when the ticket history is displayed, with no further action by the viewer. Anyone who can add HTML content to a ticket can plant it. That includes an unauthenticated sender of HTML email to any queue that grants CreateTicket or ReplyToTicket to Everyone, which is routine for a queue that accepts mail from the public. The script runs in the session of any user who views the ticket, and can act in RT with that user's authority.
