MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated WordPress account with author-level capability or above on a site where the Content Egg plugin (≤12.0.0) is installed and active, plus knowledge of a valid administrator-owned preset_id to supply to the import routine. To create published (rather than draft) admin-attributed content, the attacker must additionally hold the publish_posts capability for the preset's post type. Exploitation is limited by this authentication requirement (PR:L) - it is not reachable by fully unauthenticated users - and the impact is confined to post authorship/attribution integrity, with no confidentiality or availability effect. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but modest-severity issue best treated as a routine-priority fix rather than an emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N, base 4.3) tells a coherent story: network-reachable, low attack complexity, but it requires an authenticated account (PR:L) and yields only a limited integrity impact (I:L) with no confidentiality or availability loss. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month', which aligns with that medium rating - not 'act_now' or 'emergency'. No CISA KEV listing is present in the input and no EPSS score was provided, so there is no signal of active or probable exploitation; absence of those signals is not proof of safety but does argue against widespread automated attacks. The impact is narrow: a lower-privileged author-level user can cause posts to be attributed (and potentially published) under an administrator's account via an admin-owned preset_id, which is primarily a content-integrity, attribution-spoofing, and repudiation concern rather than code execution or data theft. The required author-level-and-above account is the main factor keeping real-world risk low, so this matters most on multi-author sites where untrusted contributors hold author roles. No conflicting signals were found between the CVSS vector and the description - both agree on authenticated, limited-integrity impact. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | On a multi-author WordPress site running Content Egg, a user holding only an author-level account calls the plugin's import queue functionality and supplies a preset_id that belongs to an administrator. Because the plugin does not verify ownership of the preset, wp_insert_post records the administrator as post_author, letting the attacker create (and, if they hold publish_posts for that post type, publish) content falsely attributed to the admin. Exploitation is remote and low-complexity but requires the attacker to already be authenticated at author level or above; no public working exploit is identified in the provided data. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 30, 2026
Authorization bypass in the Content Egg affiliate importer plugin for WordPress (all versions up to and including 12.0.0) lets an authenticated user with author-level access or above create posts that WordPress records as authored by a different account - typically an administrator - by supplying a preset_id owned by that administrator to the plugin's import routine. When the attacker also holds publish_posts capability for the preset's post type, the resulting administrator-attributed content can be published rather than left as a draft, damaging authorship integrity on the site. The flaw is remote and low-complexity but requires a valid low-privileged account (CVSS 3.1: AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N, 4.3); there is no confidentiality or availability impact, no public exploit code or PoC reference was identified at time of analysis, and it is not in CISA KEV. Our assessment rates it a genuine but modest-severity issue best handled as a routine-priority fix.
RemediationAI
Upstream fix available (changeset 3773366 in the plugin trunk, https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/3773366/content-egg/trunk/application/admin/import/ImportQueueApi.php); a released patched version number is not independently confirmed in the available data, so treat updating Content Egg past 12.0.0 as the goal and verify the fixed build in the WordPress plugin directory before rolling out, then confirm that preset ownership is checked in ImportQueueApi.php. Until the updated plugin is deployed, reduce exposure by auditing which accounts hold author-level or higher capabilities and removing any that do not need to create content, since the attack requires such an account; review recently created posts whose post_author is an administrator but which staff did not publish, and remove or reassign them; and, where the import functionality is not needed, deactivating the plugin removes the vulnerable import endpoints entirely (at the cost of losing affiliate import and price-comparison features). Site owners should also track the Wordfence advisory at https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/e179f0fc-6943-4e3b-9346-4604bd9c85bc?source=cve for the patched release.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Content Egg is a WordPress plugin that imports affiliate product data and builds price-comparison content through an administrative import subsystem. The vulnerable code lives in application/admin/import/ImportQueueApi.php (around lines 65 and 146) and application/admin/import/ProductImportService.php (around lines 991 and 1003), where import jobs are queued and then materialised into WordPress posts via wp_insert_post. The root cause maps to CWE-862 (Missing Authorization): the import path accepts a client-supplied preset_id and uses the owning preset's configuration - including the post_author value - without verifying that the requesting user actually owns or is permitted to act on that preset. Because wp_insert_post trusts the supplied author field, a lower-privileged user can mint content attributed to an administrator, and can push it live if they separately hold publish_posts for the relevant post type. The issue sits in the plugin's own capability checks rather than in WordPress core, so it is present whenever the plugin is installed and active at a vulnerable version.

DescriptionCVE.org
The Content Egg - Affiliate Product Importer & Price Comparison plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to authorization bypass in all versions up to, and including, 12.0.0 This is due to the plugin not properly verifying that a user is authorized to perform an action. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with author-level access and above, to create posts attributed to another user's account - typically an administrator - by supplying an admin-owned preset_id, causing wp_insert_post to record the administrator as post_author. This includes the ability to create published posts when the attacker already holds publish_posts capability for the preset's post type, resulting in administrator-attributed published content created by a lower-privileged user.
