MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the target site has at least one Contact Form 7 form configured with a [multistep] form-tag - the description states the canonicalization introduced in 4.7 blocks the attack path on non-multistep forms, so sites without a multistep form are not exploitable. Because it is reflected XSS (not stored), the attacker must also get a victim to perform an action such as clicking a crafted link (UI:R), and the payload executes only in that victim's browser session with no persistence. On the positive side for attackers, no authentication is required (PR:N) and the attack is network-delivered (AV:N). Limiting factors for defenders: the required user interaction, the dependency on a multistep form being present, and the lack of any confirmed active exploitation or public exploit code. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity reflected XSS (CWE-79, CVSS 6.1) whose signals are internally consistent rather than conflicting. The CVSS vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N indicates a network-reachable, unauthenticated (PR:N) flaw that requires victim interaction (UI:R) and yields only limited confidentiality/integrity impact within the browser (scope-changed, C:L/I:L, A:N) - typical of reflected XSS, not server compromise. There is no KEV listing, so this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' and there is no evidence of active exploitation; no EPSS score was supplied, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified from the input. The vuln.today Decision label is 'this_month' (not act_now/emergency), which aligns with the picture of a real-but-not-urgent issue: genuine, remotely triggerable, but gated by two practical factors - the victim must be tricked into clicking a crafted link, and the target site must have at least one Contact Form 7 form configured with a [multistep] form-tag, because the canonicalization added in 4.7 blocks the path on non-multistep forms. Net: a legitimate patch-this-cycle item for sites running multistep CF7 forms, not a drop-everything emergency, and not a high-CVSS-but-illusory issue either. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An unauthenticated attacker crafts a URL pointing at a page of the target WordPress site that renders a Contact Form 7 multistep form, embedding a script payload in the 'l10n_print_after' parameter, and lures a logged-in user or visitor into clicking it (e.g., via phishing). When the victim loads the page, the unsanitized parameter is reflected into the response and the injected script executes in the victim's browser in the site's origin. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, though the vendor fix commit and the vulnerable source lines are publicly visible. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
Reflected cross-site scripting in the Webheadcoder Multi-Step Forms for Contact Form 7 WordPress plugin, affecting all versions up to and including 4.7, lets unauthenticated remote attackers inject arbitrary script through the 'l10n_print_after' parameter, which is written into a page without adequate sanitization or escaping and executes in a victim's browser when a crafted link is visited. The site must have at least one Contact Form 7 form configured with a [multistep] form-tag, since the canonicalization added in 4.7 blocks the attack path on non-multistep forms, and successful exploitation depends on a user being tricked into clicking a link (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N, 6.1). No confirmed active exploitation (CISA KEV) or public exploit code was identified at time of analysis; the upstream commit that removes the reserved 'l10n_print_after' key is public, and the plugin Trac shows a 4.7.1 tag.
RemediationAI
Upstream fix is available as commit 16f71561797b71548021dc9c4e30b0456e718cd3 in https://github.com/coreyt808/webheadcoder-multi-step-forms-for-contact-form-7, and the plugin Trac carries the patched 4.7.1 revision (https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/browser/contact-form-7-multi-step-module/tags/4.7.1/cf7msm.php), so administrators should update the plugin past version 4.7 to the fixed release; released-package confirmation of 4.7.1 as the shipped patched version is available from the vendor advisory at https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/6fa810af-e620-49e5-9be0-f9fc4d09ed6d?source=cve. Sites that cannot update immediately should note the vulnerability is only reachable where a Contact Form 7 form uses a [multistep] form-tag, so removing that form-tag (or deactivating the plugin) closes the attack path at the cost of losing multi-step form functionality; because this is reflected XSS requiring a victim to follow a crafted link, reducing exposure means not distributing links carrying attacker-controlled form-data parameters and relying on browser-level script filtering, though these are partial measures and the vendor fix (reserved-key removal, JSON-encoded inline script, HttpOnly/SameSite cookies, cookie data sanitization) is the complete remediation.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is a CWE-79 improper neutralization of user-controlled input during web page generation (cross-site scripting) in a WordPress plugin that adds multi-step form handling to Contact Form 7. The vulnerable parameter name, 'l10n_print_after', is a reserved key in WordPress's wp_localize_script() mechanism: when an array passed to that function contains this key, WordPress emits its value as executable JavaScript appended to the localized data. The plugin takes user-supplied posted form data (persisted in a cookie) and passes it to wp_localize_script() without filtering that reserved key, so attacker-influenced content can reach the generated script context. The upstream commit (coreyt808/webheadcoder-multi-step-forms-for-contact-form-7, 16f7156) replaces wp_localize_script() output with wp_json_encode() plus wp_add_inline_script() using JSON_HEX_TAG, JSON_HEX_AMP, JSON_HEX_APOS and JSON_HEX_QUOT, explicitly unsets the reserved 'l10n_print_after' key during sanitization, adds cookie attributes (HttpOnly, SameSite=Lax, Secure when applicable), and sanitizes decoded cookie keys, including cookies saved before the fix. It also hardens the client-side script (null/undefined handling, Array.isArray checks, refreshed conditional-field handling). The plugin's JavaScript loader and cf7msm.php lines referenced in the Trac links (tags/4.7 at lines 180, 225, 395 and 1444) are the affected code locations; the 4.7.1 tag of cf7msm.php is the fixed revision.

Unauthenticated reflected XSS delivered over the network needing a victim click (UI:R), executing in the browser (scope change) with limited C/I and no availability impact; the multistep-form requirement is a target-config dependency, not attacker complexity.

DescriptionCVE.org
The Webheadcoder Multi-Step Forms for Contact Form 7 plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Reflected Cross-Site Scripting via the 'l10n_print_after' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.7 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that execute if they can successfully trick a user into performing an action such as clicking on a link. Successful exploitation requires that the targeted site has at least one Contact Form 7 form configured with a [multistep] form-tag, as the canonicalization introduced in version 4.7 blocks the attack path on non-multistep forms.
