Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires an authenticated account with Contributor-level privileges or higher on a WordPress site running WP Visitor Statistics (Real Time Traffic) version 8.8 or earlier, and the ability to place the [wsm_showTrafficStatsList] shortcode (via post/page content the attacker can author) with attacker-controlled 'from', 'to', 'first', or 'second' attribute values. The specific trigger is that shortcode_atts() passes these attributes through unsanitized (only $atts['id'] is re-sanitized) and the raw value is concatenated into a double-quoted SQL literal in fnGetHourlyReportByDateNameTimeZone(). Limiting factors: the Contributor+ authentication requirement (PR:L) excludes fully anonymous attackers and narrows realistic exploitation to sites allowing untrusted authoring or where a low-privilege account is already compromised; impact is confined to database read (confidentiality), with no stated integrity or availability effect.

Impact

This is a moderate-priority, authenticated SQL injection (CWE-89) with a coherent set of signals rather than conflicting ones. The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N, base 6.5) indicates network-reachable, low-complexity exploitation but requires privileges (PR:L), which the description pins down precisely as Contributor-level access and above. The confidentiality-only impact (C:H, I:N, A:N) matches the description's claim of data extraction via appended queries. Decision signals are consistent with a non-emergency posture: the vuln.today Decision label is 'this_month' (not act_now/emergency), the CVE is NOT listed in CISA KEV, no EPSS exploitation-probability score was supplied, and no working exploit code is referenced - only the Wordfence advisory, the vulnerable source lines on plugins.trac, and the fix changeset. The main limiting factor is the authentication requirement: an attacker needs a valid Contributor (or higher) account on the target site, which meaningfully narrows the realistic attacker population to sites with open/multi-author registration or already-compromised low-privilege accounts. Net assessment: a genuine confidentiality risk worth patching on a normal cycle, but not a drop-everything emergency given the authenticated precondition, absence of KEV, and no confirmed public exploit. Missing data to note explicitly: no EPSS score provided and no independently confirmed fixed version number (the fix is evidenced only by changeset 3768203).

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker holding a Contributor-level (or higher) account on a WordPress site running WP Visitor Statistics ≤8.8 authors a post or page containing the [wsm_showTrafficStatsList] shortcode with a malicious 'from' (or 'to'/'first'/'second') attribute value. Because WordPress core's shortcode_atts() returns the attribute verbatim and the plugin concatenates it directly into a double-quoted SQL string in fnGetHourlyReportByDateNameTimeZone() (includes/wsm_db.php:1449) executed via $wpdb->get_results(), the attacker appends additional SQL to read sensitive data such as credentials or password hashes from the database. No public exploit identified at time of analysis; the trigger path is fully described in the referenced plugin source.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026

Authenticated SQL injection in the WP Visitor Statistics (Real Time Traffic) WordPress plugin, affecting versions up to and including 8.8, lets a Contributor-level user or higher inject arbitrary SQL into queries run by the [wsm_showTrafficStatsList] shortcode and read data from the site's database. The flaw is rated CVSS 6.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N), with confidentiality as the only assessed impact - integrity and availability are unaffected. No public exploit or active exploitation is identified at time of analysis, and an upstream fix has been committed to the plugin's trunk (changeset 3768203) with no released patched version number confirmed in the available data.

RemediationAI

No released patched version number is confirmed in the available data; the fix is present upstream in the plugin's trunk as changeset 3768203 (https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/3768203/wp-stats-manager/trunk/includes/wsm_db.php), so sites should track the plugin's release channel for the first version above 8.8 and upgrade to it, verifying the change against the vulnerable lines at includes/wsm_db.php:1449 and includes/wsm_statistics.php:1980/2002. Until a patched release is installed, the practical constraint is the stated exploitation prerequisite: only accounts with Contributor-level access or above that can author content containing the [wsm_showTrafficStatsList] shortcode can reach the injectable attributes, so audit and reduce Contributor-and-above accounts, review existing posts for shortcode usage with unusual 'from'/'to'/'first'/'second' values, and remove the shortcode from content authored by untrusted users - noting that these measures limit exposure rather than repair the underlying unparameterized query and do not protect sites that must grant such authoring rights.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The plugin registers the [wsm_showTrafficStatsList] shortcode, whose handler in includes/wsm_statistics.php (around lines 1980 and 2002 in tag 8.8) reads the 'from', 'to', 'first' and 'second' attributes. WordPress core's shortcode_atts() is a merge/defaults helper and performs no sanitization, so attacker-supplied attribute values pass through verbatim; the plugin re-sanitizes only $atts['id']. The raw value is then concatenated into a double-quoted SQL string literal inside fnGetHourlyReportByDateNameTimeZone() at includes/wsm_db.php:1449 (a sibling sink appears at line 1629) and executed through $wpdb->get_results(), which is the classic CWE-89 pattern of unparameterized string building rather than $wpdb->prepare(). Because the injection lands inside a quoted literal, a crafted attribute can terminate the string and append further statements/clauses, allowing extraction of arbitrary database content reachable by the WordPress database user. The trigger requires that the attacker be able to author content containing the shortcode with controlled attributes.

DescriptionCVE.org

The WP Visitor Statistics (Real Time Traffic) plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to SQL Injection via the 'from' (and sibling 'to'/'first'/'second') shortcode attribute of the [wsm_showTrafficStatsList] shortcode in versions up to, and including, 8.8 This is due to insufficient escaping on the user-supplied attribute and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query: shortcode_atts() returns attacker-supplied shortcode attributes verbatim (WP core performs no sanitization), only $atts['id'] is re-sanitized afterward, and the raw value is then concatenated into a double-quoted SQL string literal inside fnGetHourlyReportByDateNameTimeZone() (includes/wsm_db.php:1449) and executed via $wpdb->get_results(). This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Contributor-level access and above, to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database.
