2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the embedding application has the General HTML Support (GHS) feature enabled AND is specifically configured to allow inserting object content; the advisory states this affects only such installations, so default or GHS-disabled deployments are not exposed. The attacker must be able to supply markup that the editor processes (reflected by PR:L), and the trigger is crafted markup involving disallowed object/data: URI content that the patch now filters. Key limiting factors: the vulnerable GHS object configuration is non-default, attack complexity is high per the vendor vector, and critically the resulting JavaScript executes in a browser context isolated from the origin of the embedding application - which the vendor models as no confidentiality impact and only low integrity impact, materially reducing realistic damage compared to classic same-origin stored XSS. |
| Impact | All available signals point to a genuinely low-priority issue rather than a high-severity flaw dressed down by scoring. The vendor CVSS:3.1 base score is 3.1 (Low) with vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N: network-reachable but high attack complexity, requiring some privilege, with no confidentiality or availability impact and only low integrity impact because the injected JavaScript runs in a browser context isolated from the embedding application's origin. The vuln.today decision label is 'monitor', consistent with that low score. No EPSS probability was supplied, there is no CISA KEV listing (not actively exploited), and the input contains only vendor advisory, commit, and release references - no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The main caveat is configuration dependence: exploitation is confined to installations where General HTML Support is enabled AND specifically configured to allow object content, so raw CVSS network reachability overstates real exposure for the typical default deployment. No signals conflict; the chief missing data points are EPSS and any independent exploitability assessment, both absent from the input. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | In an application embedding CKEditor 5 where General HTML Support is enabled and configured to permit inserting objects, an actor able to supply editor content submits specially crafted markup (for example an object referencing a disallowed data: URI). When the editor processes that content, attacker-controlled JavaScript executes, though in a browser context isolated from the embedding application's origin. No public exploit code is identified in the provided data, and the AC:H rating reflects the specific non-default configuration required. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
Cross-site scripting in the CKEditor 5 engine (@ckeditor/ckeditor5-engine) allows crafted markup to execute attacker-controlled JavaScript when the editor processes it, but only on installations where General HTML Support is enabled and explicitly configured to permit inserting object content. Exposed versions are 29.0.0 through 47.7.3 and 48.0.0 through 48.5.0; default builds and deployments without that non-default GHS object allowlist are not affected. Per the vendor and the assessed vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N), the injected script runs in a browser context isolated from the embedding application's origin, so the vendor models no confidentiality impact and only low integrity impact; no public exploit was identified at the time of analysis and the issue is tracked as monitor priority.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to CKEditor 5 48.5.1 or later, or to the 47.7.4 LTS release, which contain the engine fix that restricts data: URIs in the editing view to binary image, audio and video MIME types (see the release tags v48.5.1 and v47.7.4, the advisory at https://github.com/ckeditor/ckeditor5/security/advisories/GHSA-v6mg-96c6-gmpq, and commits 4d9c5bb34f63cd956d15ccafbe584e14280c86a0 and a750e38635db6a18c5b11599c09f4fd702850423); note that 48.5.1 is a shared release that also incorporates the es-toolkit prototype pollution fix in GHSA-rh54-vffm-5fvp, so consumers on the 48.x line pick up both by moving to 48.5.1. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, the exposure can be removed by disabling General HTML Support or by deleting the object content entry from its allowlist configuration, since the advisory states only installations with GHS enabled and configured to allow objects are affected; this trades away the ability to paste or store those object elements through the editor. Apply the upgrade in preference to the configuration workaround, as the vendor treats the patched release as the complete fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
CKEditor 5 is a JavaScript rich-text editor built on an MVC architecture, and the engine package is the layer that converts incoming HTML into the editor's model and back into the editing view. The flaw is a CWE-79 improper-neutralization issue rooted in the filtering of data: URIs in the editing view: when General HTML Support (the feature that lets integrators whitelist arbitrary HTML elements and attributes) is configured to allow object content, specially crafted markup survives processing and yields script execution. The vendor fix, described in the release notes as improved data: URI filtering in the editing view, narrows the accepted data: URIs to binary image, audio and video MIME types, closing the object-content path. The advisory does not describe the exact parsing sequence beyond crafted markup reaching the object/data: URI handling, and it explicitly scopes impact to installs with that GHS configuration; the resulting execution occurs in a context isolated from the host application's origin, which is why scope is unchanged and confidentiality impact is none.

2DescriptionCVE.org
CKEditor 5 is a modern JavaScript rich-text editor with an MVC architecture. From 29.0.0 until 47.7.4 and 48.5.1, specially crafted markup can trigger cross-site scripting when General HTML Support is enabled and specifically configured to allow object content. Processing that content can execute attacker-controlled JavaScript in a browser context isolated from the origin of the application embedding the editor. This issue is fixed in versions 47.7.4 and 48.5.1.
