MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated backend session (PR:H) AND a valid session-bound CSRF token for the Packages page (reflected in AT:P); per the GHSA PoC the token must be retrieved from an already-valid backend/admin PHPSESSID, so the attacker effectively needs access tied to the victim's authenticated session. The victim must also follow a crafted link to the backend packages API (page=packages&rex-api-call=package&function=<payload>), so successful attacks depend on user interaction and a non-nonexistent package value triggering the 'Unknown package function' error path. These prerequisites - valid backend auth, a valid CSRF token, and luring a logged-in user - are the primary limiting factors; the flaw affects REDAXO core before 5.21.0. |
| Impact | This is a low-priority, high-caveat issue rather than an urgent threat, and the signals are internally consistent. The vendor CVSS 4.0 score is 2.1 (Low) with vector AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:H/UI:N, and the vuln.today decision label is 'monitor' - all pointing to low real-world urgency. No EPSS score and no KEV listing are provided, so there is no evidence of active exploitation; per the input this is not a CISA KEV entry. A full working proof-of-concept (Python exploit plus demo videos) is published directly in the GHSA advisory, so exploit code is public, but PoC availability is a distinct signal from active exploitation and must not be conflated. The CVSS vector carries PR:H, so exploitation requires an authenticated high-privilege backend user; combined with AT:P this reflects the hard prerequisite that the attacker must supply a valid per-session CSRF token. The PoC itself underscores this limitation: it retrieves the CSRF token using an already-valid admin PHPSESSID, meaning realistic exploitation approaches a self-XSS/already-authenticated scenario rather than broad remote compromise. Note one modeling tension: the 4.0 vector sets UI:N, yet the description explicitly requires luring a backend user to click a crafted link - real user interaction - which argues the vendor under-counted UI. Impact is uniformly Low (VC:L/VI:L/VA:L) with no scope change to other systems. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who can obtain a valid backend CSRF token for a target's session crafts a malicious packages-API link embedding a JavaScript payload in the 'function' parameter, then lures an authenticated REDAXO backend user into clicking it; the unescaped error message reflects the payload and executes script in the victim's authenticated session, enabling same-origin requests or reading DOM data. A complete working PoC and demo are published in the GHSA advisory. The requirement for a valid session-bound CSRF token (which the PoC obtains from an existing admin session) sharply limits realistic, remote-at-scale exploitation. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
Reflected cross-site scripting in the REDAXO backend packages API affects core releases before 5.21.0, where the function request parameter is concatenated into an 'Unknown package function' exception message and rendered by rex_view::error() without HTML escaping. Exploitation is heavily constrained: the crafted request must carry a valid session-bound CSRF token for the packages API and the victim must follow the resulting backend link while logged in, so the vendor scores confidentiality, integrity and availability impact as low (CVSS 4.0 base 2.1; independent assessment CVSS 3.1 AV:N/AC:H/PR:H/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N). A proof-of-concept script that assembles the exploitation link is included in the GitHub security advisory, but it requires an already-valid backend PHPSESSID to harvest the token; the issue is not in CISA KEV and the vuln.today priority decision is monitor rather than act-now.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: REDAXO core 5.21.0, the fixed version named in the upstream advisory and in the composer package metadata (composer/redaxo/source vulnerable below 5.21.0, fixed in 5.21.0); upgrading to 5.21.0 or later is the complete fix. Patch availability is confirmed from the vendor via GHSA-xq4j-g85q-wf97 (https://github.com/redaxo/core/security/advisories/GHSA-xq4j-g85q-wf97), with a supporting write-up at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/redaxo-before-5.21.0-reflected-xss-via-packages-api-function-parameter . The published advisory does not describe any configuration-level workaround or feature toggle that removes the vulnerable rendering path, so no alternate mitigation is stated in the available sources; the only documented resolution is applying the 5.21.0 update. Because the issue requires an attacker to hold a valid CSRF token tied to an authenticated backend session, treat any exposure of backend session identifiers or token-bearing backend URLs to third parties as the condition that makes this exploitable, and note that the vuln.today decision label is monitor, consistent with the assessed high-caveat, low-impact vector rather than an act-now response.

Technical ContextAI · show details
REDAXO is a PHP-based content management system whose backend exposes an API dispatcher through index.php (e.g. page=packages&rex-api-call=package). In redaxo/src/core/lib/packages/api_package.php the request value function is read with rex_request('function', 'string') and string-concatenated directly into a rex_api_exception message ('Unknown package function "' . $function . '"!'); that message is then passed to rex_view::error(), which delegates to rex_view::message() and returns '<div class="...">' . $message . '</div>' without escaping. The result is CWE-79 reflected XSS: attacker-controlled markup in the URL is echoed back into the backend page in the origin of the CMS. The _csrf_token parameter that the API dispatcher requires is reflected into the backend page HTML for rex-api-call=package, which is why the advisory describes abduction of a valid token from an authenticated session as a precondition; the token is bound to that session, and the GHSA's proof-of-concept retrieves it from an already-authenticated admin PHPSESSID. HttpOnly session cookies limit direct session theft, so realistic impact is limited to same-origin actions and DOM data readable in the victim's backend context, consistent with the assessed scope-changed, low-confidentiality/low-integrity vector.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
REDAXO before 5.21.0 contains a reflected cross-site scripting vulnerability in the backend packages API, where the function parameter is concatenated into an error message rendered without HTML escaping. Attackers can lure an authenticated backend user to a crafted link containing a valid CSRF token, executing JavaScript that performs same-origin actions or reads DOM data.
