| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated REDAXO backend account holding mediapool upload or edit rights (administrator not required). The SVG extension must be permitted - svg is not in the mediapool's default blocked_extensions, so default installs are exposed. Exploitation then needs one of two conditions: (1) winning a short race by requesting the public .svg URL during the single-digit-millisecond sanitization window (explicitly unreliable, requiring high-frequency timed requests), or (2) causing sanitizeMedia()'s full-DOM parse to exceed the request's memory_limit or max_execution_time so the request dies after the move, leaving the unsanitized SVG permanently public (no timing needed, but dependent on server resource limits and file size). Successful script execution additionally requires a victim backend user to open the raw .svg URL as a top-level navigation or via iframe, and a single-domain deployment where /media/ shares the backend origin. Limiting factors: required authentication with upload rights, required victim interaction, and the configuration-dependent sanitizer-failure condition - all of which substantially constrain real-world exploitability. |
| Impact | All decision signals converge on LOW real-world priority. The vendor/input CVSS 4.0 base score is 2.1, the vuln.today Decision label is 'monitor', and the CISA SSVC framework records Exploitation: none, Automatable: no, Technical Impact: partial. The CVSS vector itself raises the exploitation bar on multiple axes: PR:L (an authenticated backend account with mediapool rights is required), UI:P (a victim must be induced to open the raw file), and AC:H/AT:P (a specific, attacker-uncontrolled condition must hold). The source-code evidence confirms this: the 'race the sanitizer' path is explicitly described as unreliable with a single-digit-millisecond window requiring high-frequency timed requests, while the more dependable 'sanitization never completes' path depends on the upload exceeding the request's memory_limit/max_execution_time - a server-configuration-dependent condition, not something the attacker fully controls. Impact is limited to C:L/I:L (partial) - stored XSS in a backend session on typical single-domain installs. No CISA KEV listing and SSVC Exploitation: none mean there is no evidence of active exploitation; no public exploit identified at time of analysis. EPSS is not provided in the input, so probabilistic exploitation likelihood cannot be cited. Net: a genuine but low-severity, authenticated, conditions-dependent issue - patch during normal maintenance, not an emergency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A logged-in REDAXO backend user who only holds mediapool upload/edit rights (not an administrator) uploads an SVG containing a <script> element. Because the file is moved into the public /media/ folder before the SVG sanitizer runs, the raw unsanitized file is briefly (or, if sanitization never completes due to memory/time limits, permanently) served from its public URL. The attacker then lures another backend user to open that raw .svg URL as a top-level navigation or in an iframe, and because /media/ shares the backend origin on single-domain installs, the script executes in the victim's authenticated backend session. No public exploit identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in REDAXO 5.18.0 through 5.21.3 allows an authenticated backend user with mediapool upload or edit rights to leave a script-bearing SVG publicly served from /media/, where a victim who opens the raw file can execute script in the backend origin. The flaw is a move-before-sanitize ordering issue: the race path is explicitly unreliable, while the persistent path depends on the sanitizer exhausting memory_limit or max_execution_time, and backend-session impact also assumes a single-domain deployment where /media/ shares the backend origin. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis, CISA SSVC rates exploitation as none and automatable as no, the decision signal is monitor, and REDAXO 5.21.4 contains the vendor fix.
RemediationAI
Upgrade REDAXO to 5.21.4 or later; this is the vendor-released patch and changes mediapool handling so uploads are sanitized in a temporary file outside the public media folder and unparsable SVGs are rejected with an error. If immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict mediapool upload and edit permissions to trusted backend users, or block SVG uploads by appending svg to blocked_extensions in the project addon's boot.php, for example $mediapool->setProperty('blocked_extensions', [...$mediapool->getProperty('blocked_extensions'), 'svg']);. For Apache, the advisory also suggests serving .svg files with Content-Security-Policy 'sandbox' and X-Content-Type-Options 'nosniff' via .htaccess, noting that this should be tested because media_manager and CDN configurations may need adjustment. Installations older than 5.18.0 are not covered by the 5.21.4 fix path and should be upgraded or have SVG uploads blocked. See https://github.com/redaxo/core/security/advisories/GHSA-2p3g-jr7p-qwwx.

Technical ContextAI · show details
REDAXO's mediapool handles uploads through rex_media_service in redaxo/src/addons/mediapool/lib/service_media.php. Both addMedia() and updateMedia() call rex_file::move(), implemented as rename(), to place the upload in the public /media/<filename> path and only afterwards call sanitizeMedia() on that already-public file. Because svg is absent from blocked_extensions and the top-level media directory has no access restrictions, the raw SVG is served as image/svg+xml; script inside it runs in the /media/ origin and, on single-domain installs, with the victim's backend session. The advisory maps this to CWE-79 stored XSS, with CWE-367 race condition and CWE-434 unrestricted upload as contributing classes. Two failure modes reach the unsanitized content: requesting the URL during the single-digit-millisecond sanitizer window, or forcing sanitizeMedia()'s full-DOM parse past memory_limit or max_execution_time so the request dies after the move and the file remains public; a separate robustness bug wrote an empty string when parsing failed. The 5.21.4 fix sanitizes into a temporary file outside the public folder and rejects unparsable SVGs.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
REDAXO from 5.18.0 before 5.21.4 contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability because rex_media_service moves uploaded SVG files into the public media folder before sanitizing them. Authenticated users with mediapool upload rights can race the sanitizer or exhaust memory limits to leave script-laden SVGs publicly served, executing scripts in victims' backend sessions.
