MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | The attacker must hold a backend account with content-editing or metadata-editing permission in REDAXO (PR:L) to store a crafted REX_INPUT_MEDIA, REX_INPUT_MEDIALIST, REX_INPUT_LINK or REX_INPUT_LINKLIST value; the readonly attribute on the widget is a client-side hint only and does not stop submission. Execution additionally requires a victim user - typically an administrator - to subsequently open a form that renders the poisoned widget (the slice editor, metainfo fields on articles/categories/media/users, or any rex_form using these widgets), satisfying the passive UI requirement. The vendor states there is no configuration-level workaround; the only complete fix is updating to 5.21.4, and interim risk can only be reduced by limiting content and metadata editing to trusted users. REX_VALUE is unaffected because it escapes by default, and the frontend output of REX_MEDIA/REX_LINK is intentionally unchanged. |
| Impact | This is a stored XSS (CWE-79/CWE-116) in REDAXO's media, medialist, link and linklist backend input widgets, rated 5.1 (Medium) on the supplied CVSS 4.0 vector AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:P/VC:N/VI:N/VA:N/SC:L/SI:L/SA:N. The signals are internally consistent and point to a moderate, not emergency, priority: the attacker must already hold a backend content-editing account (PR:L), and exploitation is passive - it only fires when another user, typically an administrator, opens a form containing the poisoned widget (UI:P). There is no CISA KEV listing and no EPSS score in the supplied data, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation; the vuln.today decision label is 'this_month', consistent with a prioritized-but-not-urgent fix. The GHSA advisory includes a concrete breakout payload demonstrating the flaw, so a public PoC reference exists, but it is not verified as packaged working exploit code and PoC availability must not be conflated with active exploitation. The practical risk is privilege escalation: a lower-privileged editor can take over an administrator session and thereby the whole installation, which raises the real-world impact above what the 5.1 base score alone suggests, but the requirement for an existing trusted-ish editor account and victim interaction meaningfully constrains it. No key data conflicts; EPSS and KEV are simply absent (expected for a non-exploited medium-severity CMS XSS). |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in REDAXO's media, medialist, link and linklist backend input widgets (versions before 5.21.4) lets an authenticated content editor persist a crafted REX_INPUT_MEDIA, REX_INPUT_MEDIALIST, REX_INPUT_LINK or REX_INPUT_LINKLIST value that breaks out of the form field's value attribute and runs script in the backend session of any administrator who later opens a form containing that widget, enabling session and CSRF token theft and account takeover. The widgets build their HTML by string concatenation without rex_escape(), so the value is stored unfiltered and the readonly attribute on the field is only a client-side hint. Rated 5.1 (Medium); no public exploit identified at time of analysis and a vendor-released patch (5.21.4) is available.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: 5.21.4. Updating to REDAXO 5.21.4 escapes the widget values at the point of output, which covers every caller (slice editor, metainfo buttons, form elements and add-on supplied forms); users of earlier 5.x versions should update. The vendor states there is no configuration-level workaround, so until the update can be applied the only interim measure is to limit content and metadata editing permissions to trusted users, accepting that any editor account then remains a potential path to administrator account takeover. Note that the fix addresses the backend widgets only - module templates that place REX_MEDIA, REX_MEDIALIST, REX_LINK or REX_LINKLIST values into frontend HTML remain responsible for escaping them, while REX_VALUE already escapes by default. Technical ContextAI · show details
REDAXO is a PHP-based content management system whose media pool and structure add-ons ship reusable backend form widgets: rex_var_media::getWidget() and the medialist, link and linklist counterparts render the stored value directly into the value attribute of text and hidden inputs and into option value/text pairs. Because rex_escape() is never applied at those output points (mediapool/lib/var_media.php:93, var_medialist.php:71 and :91, structure/lib/linkmap/var_link.php:80, var_linklist.php:64 and :83), a payload such as " onfocus=alert(document.domain) autofocus x=" closes the attribute and injects event handlers - CWE-79, with the improper neutralization/encoding aspect also captured as CWE-116. The value reaches the database unfiltered because rex_article_action::setRequestValues() writes submitted REX_INPUT_* values straight into the slice row, and the readonly attribute on the widget input does not prevent submission. The same getWidget() code is reused by the metainfo input buttons (article, category, media and user metadata) and by the mediapool/structure form elements used by any rex_form, including add-on supplied forms, so the issue is not limited to the slice editor. REX_VALUE escapes its value by default and is unaffected, and the fix deliberately leaves the frontend output of REX_MEDIA, REX_MEDIALIST, REX_LINK and REX_LINKLIST raw by design.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
REDAXO before 5.21.4 contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability that allows content editors to inject HTML by storing unescaped values rendered by media, medialist, link and linklist widgets. Attackers can submit crafted REX_INPUT_MEDIA or REX_INPUT_LINK values that break out of the value attribute, executing script in administrators' backend sessions to hijack accounts.
