Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated REDAXO editor session with content permission on at least one category - this is the key limiting factor, confining exploitation to multi-editor installations and compromised/insider accounts rather than anonymous attackers. Per-path prerequisites from the vendor advisory: slice delete (content/edit function=delete) needs the module permission for the addressed slice's module, which defaults to 'all'; the content_slice_status API needs the global publishSlice[] permission; content_move_slice needs the global moveSlice[] permission plus the module permission for the addressed slice; slice edit/overwrite (content/edit function=edit) additionally requires a matching module/template constellation (the addressed slice's module must be allowed in the template and ctype of the attacker's own article), making overwrite the hardest effect to achieve. Delete and online/offline toggling need the fewest extra permissions and are the most direct effects. No victim, user interaction, or cross-site vector is required. Fixed in REDAXO 5.21.4 (vulnerable <= 5.21.3); updating is the remediation given by the vendor.

Impact

This is a moderate-priority, authenticated authorization flaw rather than a widespread emergency. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N, VI:H, all other impacts N; 7.1) tells a consistent story: network-reachable, low complexity, no user interaction, but PR:L - the attacker must already hold a REDAXO editor account with content permission on at least one category, which bounds the threat to multi-editor installations and insider/compromised-account scenarios. No EPSS score was provided, the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV, and the only references are vendor/coordinator advisories (GitHub GHSA and VulnCheck) - no PoC or working exploit code is referenced. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_week', which aligns with a patch-available, non-actively-exploited integrity bug: act within the week, not immediately. One signal to verify: the vendor 4.0 vector sets VA:N, but the GHSA advisory text states both integrity AND availability of other editors' content are affected (deletion and de-activation) - treat the availability wording as integrity-of-data impact unless the vendor clarifies. Net: a real but scoped integrity issue for sites with multiple editors; low urgency for single-editor or single-author deployments.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated REDAXO editor who holds content permission on at least one category crafts a content/edit (function=delete or edit) request, or a call to the content_slice_status / content_move_slice API, that references an article they are allowed to edit while pointing the slice id at a slice in a category they cannot access. Because the permission check is evaluated against the request article but the mutation acts on the independent slice reference, REDAXO applies the change to the foreign slice, letting the attacker delete, toggle online/offline, move, or (with a matching module/template constellation) overwrite another editor's content. No public exploit identified at time of analysis; the attack needs no victim and no cross-site vector and runs entirely within the attacker's own authenticated session.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026

Broken access control in REDAXO core before 5.21.4 allows an authenticated editor to redirect slice write operations at content they are not permitted to change, by pairing an article they are allowed to edit with the id of a slice belonging to another category. Deleting and toggling other editors' slices online/offline require the fewest additional permissions, while moving them needs the global moveSlice[] right and overwriting content additionally requires a matching module/template constellation. This is a moderate-priority, authenticated authorization flaw rather than a widespread emergency: exploitation needs a valid editor session with content permission on at least one category, no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and the vendor has released REDAXO 5.21.4 as the fix.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to REDAXO core 5.21.4 or later, the version in which the slice operations are changed to validate that the addressed slice actually belongs to the permission-checked article; the vendor advisory states that updating is the remediation, so no alternative patch-level workaround is documented in the available sources. The fix is available from the vendor per the GHSA advisory at https://github.com/redaxo/core/security/advisories/GHSA-5m63-c3qx-wq8v and is tracked as fixed in composer/redaxo/source 5.21.4. Until the upgrade is deployed, exposure is bounded by the prerequisite that the attacker must already hold an authenticated editor session with content permission on at least one category, so limiting content-edit accounts on multi-editor installations to editors who genuinely need slice write access reduces the pool of potential abusers - at the cost of restricting editorial workflows - but this is a compensating control and not a substitute for installing 5.21.4. Because exploitation occurs entirely inside the attacker's own legitimate session with no victim interaction or cross-site vector, log review should focus on slice delete, status-change and move events recorded against articles whose category does not match the actor's assigned permissions.

Technical ContextAI · show details

REDAXO is a PHP-based content management system distributed as composer/redaxo/source, in which articles live in categories and are composed of slices - content blocks bound to modules and rendered through templates and ctypes. The flaw is CWE-639 (Authorization Bypass Through User-Controlled Key), with the advisory also classifying it as CWE-863: the writing slice operations derive the required category permission from the article passed in the request, but the operation itself acts on an independent slice reference taken from the same request, and nothing verifies that the addressed slice belongs to that article and therefore to the category the check was based on. This decouples the authorization gate from the mutation, so a permitted article plus a foreign slice id passes the check on the attacker's own article while the change lands on someone else's slice. The pattern appears in four verified code paths of 5.21.3 - the content/edit page with function=delete (calls rex_content_service::deleteSlice() with the independent slice reference, gated by the module permission for the addressed slice's module, which defaults to 'all'), content/edit with function=edit (updates the slice row through WHERE id = <slice_id>, and additionally needs the addressed slice's module to be allowed in the template and ctype of the attacker's own article), the content_slice_status API (requires the global publishSlice[] permission), and the content_move_slice API (requires moveSlice[] plus the module permission for the addressed slice). The underlying service layer - rex_content_service::deleteSlice(), sliceStatus() and moveSlice() - receives only the slice reference and performs no ownership or permission check, so every caller must get it right. By contrast, article-level authorization is implemented correctly, deriving the category from the loaded target object; only the slice paths trust the freely chosen request parameter.

DescriptionCVE.org

REDAXO before 5.21.4 contains a broken access control vulnerability that allows authenticated editors to modify slices in unauthorized categories by pairing a permitted article with a foreign slice id. Attackers can abuse content/edit delete and edit functions or the content_slice_status and content_move_slice APIs to delete, toggle, move, or overwrite other editors' slices.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A broken access control flaw in REDAXO CMS versions before 5.21.4 lets authenticated editors manipulate content slices outside their assigned categories, potentially allowing limited-privilege users to delete, toggle, move, or even overwrite content they should not control. Although exploitation requires a valid editor account and specific permissions and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, the risk is concentrated in organizations running REDAXO with multiple editors whose roles are meant to be isolated. Leadership should care because this undermines the integrity of published content and the reliability of editorial permission boundaries.
