| Exploitation Conditions | Requires that the wiki expose the public Special:Ask / action=ask API (a common default on public Semantic MediaWiki installs) and accept a POST body of roughly 120 KB carrying deeply nested <q>...</q> tokens; no authenticated account is needed on a public wiki (PR:N). Exploitation is LIMITED by: deployment-level POST/request body-size caps that may block the large payload, and installations that restrict or disable the ask API. After patching, the new smwgQMaxDepth guard (default 4) in LegacyParser halts descent and returns a controlled 'smw-query-nesting-level-exceeded' error, so only pre-7.3.1 versions in the >=3.0.0 range are affected. The advisory did not confirm a full service outage, so realistic impact is worker CPU/memory consumption and capacity degradation rather than a guaranteed crash. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but bounded availability risk, not a top-tier emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) confirms a remote, unauthenticated, low-complexity trigger with no user interaction, and impact is strictly availability (VA:H; VC:N/VI:N) - consistent with CWE-674 uncontrolled recursion causing resource exhaustion, with no confidentiality or integrity exposure. No EPSS score and no CISA KEV entry were supplied, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation; the vuln.today Decision label is 'this_week' (not act_now/emergency), and the vendor patch (fixed in 7.3.1) is available, which together argue for prompt but routine patching rather than crisis response. The signals are internally consistent (high-severity network DoS with a fix) but the real-world impact is softened by the reporter's own caveat: the GHSA harness demonstrated per-worker CPU/memory consumption (up to ~3.69s and ~36 MiB at depth 20,000 within a 64 MiB limit) but did NOT establish a production worker crash or service-wide outage, and deployment POST body-size limits (the PoC needs ~120 KB) may reduce reachability. The 8.7 base score therefore somewhat overstates confirmed impact relative to what was actually demonstrated - treat this as a credible single-request/amplifiable DoS against public wikis, prioritized below any code-execution or data-exposure issue. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An unauthenticated attacker sends a single ~120 KB POST to a public wiki's action=ask API containing a deeply nested <q>...</q> query (e.g. 20,000 levels). LegacyParser::getSubqueryDescription() recurses on every opening token before the smwgQMaxDepth/size pruning runs, so one request ties up a PHP worker's CPU and memory; repeating this concurrently can degrade capacity. A public PoC reference exists in the GHSA advisory (a shell/curl command plus a bounded local harness); it is not verified as working exploit code against a live service, and the low CVSS attack complexity (AC:L, no auth, no interaction) means crafting the request is trivial. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
Unauthenticated CPU and memory exhaustion in Semantic MediaWiki 3.0.0 up to (but not including) 7.3.1 allows remote attackers to POST a deeply nested <q>...</q> query to the public action=ask / Special:Ask API, tying up PHP request workers. LegacyParser::getSubqueryDescription() recurses once per opening <q> token before the configured smwgQMaxDepth and query-size pruning in the Query layer ever run, so a payload of roughly 120 KB can burn seconds of CPU and tens of MiB of memory per request. Exploitation requires the ask API to be publicly reachable and the deployment to accept a ~120 KB POST body; authentication requirements are unconfirmed for restricted wikis but the assessed vector is PR:N (unauthenticated) for public wikis, a public PoC reference exists and is not verified as working exploit code against a live MediaWiki instance, and the demonstrated outcome is worker consumption and capacity degradation rather than a confirmed service-wide outage.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Semantic MediaWiki to 7.3.1 or later, which is the vendor-released patch; the fix is carried in commits https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/commit/756492002752f937a9e115e14330b1181bd8c60c and https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/commit/e642f38c708dee7da5e885b8d40be8ffc56f3e87 and detailed in the GHSA-f8vw-wvm6-h2qq advisory. After upgrading, the parser enforces nesting depth against $smwgQMaxDepth (default 4) at the point of descent and returns a controlled 'smw-query-nesting-level-exceeded' query validation error instead of processing the payload; on pre-7.3.1 installations that cannot be updated immediately, the vendor describes a web-server/request-length cap as useful defense in depth but explicitly notes it does not replace a depth guard, and because the only affected entry point is the public ask API, disabling or restricting action=ask and Special:Ask to trusted users removes the demonstrated attack path at the cost of losing public semantic query functionality. The upstream advisory also recommends a regression test proving inputs above the nesting limit stop at the parser boundary before any query execution.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Semantic MediaWiki is a MediaWiki extension that adds a semantic query language; the legacy query string parser is a hand-written recursive-descent parser in src/Query/Parser/LegacyParser.php, reached from the Ask API endpoint (src/MediaWiki/Api/Ask.php) through src/Query/Processor/QueryCreator.php. The root cause is CWE-674 (uncontrolled recursion): getSubqueryDescription() descends into every nested <q> element immediately, while the smwgQMaxDepth limit and query-size pruning in src/Query/Query.php are applied only to the finished description tree, so they never bound the parser's own recursion or input scanning. The advisory's bounded local harness measured depth 1,000 (6 KB) at ~12 ms and ~4 MiB peak PHP memory, depth 10,000 (60 KB) at ~966 ms and ~18 MiB, and depth 20,000 (120 KB) at ~3.69 s and ~36 MiB under a 64 MiB memory limit and 8-second wall clock; the HTTP/API path was source-traced but not executed because the checkout had no MediaWiki runtime, so the trigger is confirmed at the parser layer while end-to-end deployment behaviour depends on web-server body-size limits. The upstream fix threads an explicit depth parameter through getSubqueryDescription(), getLinkDescription() and getPropertyDescription(), mirrors $smwgQMaxDepth (default 4) into a private $maxQueryDepth, sets a $queryDepthExceeded flag, and emits a controlled 'smw-query-nesting-level-exceeded' error and unwinds instead of descending. The CVSS metrics describe severity only; they do not describe the recursion mechanism itself.

DescriptionCVE.org
Semantic MediaWiki 3.0.0 before 7.3.1 contains an uncontrolled recursion vulnerability in LegacyParser::getSubqueryDescription() that processes nested query tokens before depth limits apply. Unauthenticated attackers can submit deeply nested query elements to the action=ask API to consume substantial CPU and memory, tying up request workers.
Executive ViewAI
Semantic MediaWiki versions 3.0.0 through 7.3.0 are exposed to a high-severity unauthenticated denial-of-service vulnerability (CVE-2026-116871). Attackers can send crafted API requests that exhaust server CPU and memory, degrading availability of wiki services for all users. Leadership should prioritize patching to 7.3.1 to prevent service disruptions and potential productivity loss.
