The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

No authentication is required to inject (PR:N): the referrers_sites handler's default ACL is '*' (everyone), and the attacker fully controls the Referer value, which passes the only guards - a '^https?://' scheme check and a same-origin exclusion - using a different host that still begins with 'http://'. The concrete prerequisite for payload execution is that a user must visit the specific '?PageName/referrers_sites' handler view (UI:P); until then the stored payload is dormant. The payload persists for up to 24 days by default (referrers_purge_time) and no Content Security Policy restricts inline script (only frame-ancestors is set). Limiting factors: direct session-cookie theft is blocked because cookies are HttpOnly (YesWikiInit.php:410), so impact is constrained to same-origin fetch/XHR actions and content exfiltration in the visitor's context; and the target must be a YesWiki instance before 4.7.0 with referrer logging enabled (not set to referrers_purge_time 0).

Impact

This is a genuine but moderate-priority issue, not a top-tier emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:L/VI:L/VA:N, score 5.3) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated stored XSS whose impact is bounded to Low confidentiality/integrity on both the vulnerable and a subsequent system, with no availability impact - consistent with a persistent XSS that runs in a visitor's browser rather than compromising the server. The UI:P element is the key limiter: the payload only fires when a user loads the referrer-sites page. EPSS is low at 0.18% (7th percentile), and the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, so there is no public evidence of active exploitation; the signals are therefore aligned rather than conflicting - a low real-world exploitation probability for a niche product. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month' (not act_now/emergency), matching that assessment. A detailed, reproducible proof-of-concept is published in the GitHub Security Advisory, so exploitability is demonstrated even though it is not weaponized at scale. Net: real and patchable priority on the vendor's recommended timeline, but low likelihood of mass exploitation given the obscure footprint, the required victim interaction, and HttpOnly cookies that prevent direct session theft.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An unauthenticated attacker sends a single HTTP GET to any public YesWiki page with a crafted Referer header such as 'http://"><img src=x onerror=...>x.com/poc', which is stored and later rendered unescaped in the referrers_sites handler. When any user - potentially an authenticated admin - views that wiki page's referrers_sites view, the injected JavaScript executes in their session's origin, letting the attacker perform same-origin authenticated actions and exfiltrate page content. A working PoC (curl command) is published in the GitHub Security Advisory, so the exploitation path is demonstrated; attack complexity is low but it requires a victim to visit the referrer-sites page (UI:P).

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026

Stored cross-site scripting in YesWiki before 4.7.0 lets unauthenticated remote attackers persist JavaScript into the wiki's referrer log by sending a single request whose Referer header carries HTML metacharacters; the payload executes for any user who subsequently opens the '?PageName/referrers_sites' handler view, giving the attacker same-origin fetch/XHR capability in that visitor's session. Because session cookies are HttpOnly and the payload stays dormant until the handler page is viewed, impact is constrained to content exfiltration and actions taken as the victim rather than direct cookie theft; EPSS is low at 0.18% (7th percentile), there is no KEV entry, and the upstream GitHub advisory includes a curl-based PoC reproduction. The vendor-released fix is YesWiki 4.7.0, and per the vuln.today decision this is a this-month priority rather than an emergency.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to YesWiki 4.7.0 or later, which is the vendor-released fixed version for the yeswiki/yeswiki Composer package; the patch applies htmlspecialchars() with ENT_QUOTES and YW_CHARSET to the hostname in both the href attribute and link text of handlers/page/referrers_sites.php and covers other unescaped interpolations in that handler. Details are in the GitHub advisory at https://github.com/YesWiki/yeswiki/security/advisories/GHSA-xcwg-2pj5-3qm4. If upgrading cannot be done immediately, the advisory's interim options are to restrict access to the referrers_sites handler through the handler ACL configuration so only trusted groups can view it (trade-off: referrer statistics are no longer visible to ordinary users), or to disable referrer logging by setting referrers_purge_time to 0 in the wiki configuration (trade-off: referrer analytics are lost entirely, and existing stored entries should be cleared by whatever purge mechanism the deployment uses since the setting governs retention). Neither mitigation removes payloads already persisted in the referrer table, and note that HttpOnly session cookies only prevent cookie theft, not the same-origin fetch/XHR actions the injected script can perform in a victim's browser.

Technical ContextAI · show details

YesWiki is a PHP wiki application, and the flaw is CWE-79 improper neutralization of input during web page generation in its stored form. The referrer-sites handler (handlers/page/referrers_sites.php) derives a hostname from stored HTTP Referer URLs using parse_url() and interpolates it directly into an anchor tag at line 55 without htmlspecialchars(); PHP's parse_url() is lenient and preserves characters such as a double quote, '<' and '>' in the host component, so the value can break out of the href attribute and inject new HTML elements with event handlers. The sibling handler referrers.php applies htmlspecialchars($referrer['referrer'], ENT_COMPAT, YW_CHARSET) to the same data, confirming the escaping was intended but omitted here. Collection occurs in YesWiki::LogReferrer() (includes/YesWiki.php:740), where the only guards are a '^https?://' scheme check and a same-origin exclusion, both of which a payload using a different host beginning with 'http://' satisfies; the value is stored through mysqli_real_escape_string(), which is SQL-safe but preserves HTML metacharacters. The handler's default ACL is '*' (everyone), so the page is reachable without authentication, and the only Content Security Policy directive set is frame-ancestors, leaving inline event handlers free to execute. Stored payloads survive for the default 24-day referrers_purge_time window. The earlier seed advisory CVE-2026-52773 addressed a different handler (show.php 'time' parameter) and did not cover this code path.

DescriptionCVE.org

YesWiki before 4.7.0 contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability in handlers/page/referrers_sites.php that allows unauthenticated attackers to inject scripts via crafted Referer headers. Attackers can send a Referer hostname containing HTML metacharacters that renders unescaped, executing JavaScript for any referrer-sites page visitor to perform same-origin authenticated actions.
