V13 - Configuration Secure default settings
|
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires the bluespice/wiki container deployed in its default configuration where the WIKI_SERVICE_TOKEN_AUTH_ALLOWED environment variable is unset; this causes $mwsgTokenAuthenticatorServiceCIDR in LocalSettings.php to evaluate to an empty string, which disables the IP restriction in the token authenticator (mwstake/mediawiki-component-token-authenticator) so internal service token authentication is accepted from any address. The attacker must have read access to the wiki to call the REST API - this means fully unauthenticated (anonymous) only on publicly readable wikis; on access-controlled wikis a low-privileged read account is needed. Exploitation is limited to affected builds: BlueSpice 5.2.3 through 5.2.6, and 5.2.7 container images published before 2026-10-19 15:37 UTC. Setting WIKI_SERVICE_TOKEN_AUTH_ALLOWED to a proper CIDR, or updating to a fixed image, removes the condition. |
| Impact | All signals point in the same direction: this is a genuine high-priority issue. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity flaw that, on a publicly readable wiki, requires no authentication and yields full confidentiality, integrity and availability loss via sysop takeover. The vuln.today decision label is act_now and the vendor has shipped a patch, reinforcing urgency. The root cause is confirmed by the source diff: the default used '??' (null-coalescing), which does not fall back on an empty string, so $mwsgTokenAuthenticatorServiceCIDR stayed empty and the token authenticator's IP restriction was silently disabled - the fix changes it to '?:' (which also falls back on empty/falsy values). No EPSS score was provided and the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, so there is no data indicating active exploitation; likewise no public exploit or PoC reference is supplied, so this should be treated as no public exploit identified at time of analysis rather than a known-exploited bug. The main factor that moderates raw severity is scope of impact: exploitation is confined to the affected default-configuration container images and to attackers who have at least read access to the wiki (anonymous only where the wiki is publicly readable). On such public, default-config deployments the barrier is effectively nil, so the high CVSS is justified rather than inflated. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker with read access to an affected BlueSpice container wiki - an anonymous visitor if the wiki is publicly readable - calls the REST API to obtain an application token, then redeems that token for a session that authenticates as the internal service user with sysop privileges, giving full administrative control of the wiki. Because the default container left the token authenticator's IP restriction disabled, the request succeeds from any source address. No public proof-of-concept exploit has been published, but the trigger is straightforward given network access and the low attack complexity. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 23, 2026
Privilege escalation in BlueSpice container deployments (bluespice/wiki image, versions 5.2.3 through 5.2.6 and 5.2.7 images published before 2026-10-19 15:37 UTC) lets an attacker who can read the wiki obtain an application token from the REST API and exchange it for a session carrying sysop privileges as the internal service user. Because the token authenticator's IP allow-list is disabled by default when WIKI_SERVICE_TOKEN_AUTH_ALLOWED is unset, no authentication is required on publicly readable wikis (CVSS:3.1 AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N), while on access-controlled wikis a low-privileged read account suffices. Vendor-released fixes are available (5.2.7 and later, or a 5.2.7 image published on/after 2026-10-19 15:37 UTC); no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis. Severity is 9.3 (CVSS 4.0), and the priority decision is act_now.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to BlueSpice 5.2.7 or later, and if staying on 5.2.7 pull a container image published on or after 2026-10-19 15:37 UTC, which contains commit 04b840be565b508f6e741c376970909b69d2a444 (see advisory https://en.wiki.bluespice.com/wiki/Security:Security_Advisories/BSSA-2026-07). Where an immediate image update is not possible, set the WIKI_SERVICE_TOKEN_AUTH_ALLOWED environment variable to an explicit CIDR matching the internal container network so that $mwsgTokenAuthenticatorServiceCIDR is no longer empty and the token authenticator's IP restriction is re-enabled - this restores the intended restriction rather than removing the token feature, but it must be kept in sync if the container network changes, and deployments relying on external service callers must add their ranges explicitly or those calls will be rejected. Auditing existing wikis for tokens issued to the internal service user and for sessions created through the REST API is advisable, since the insecure default permits token issuance from any address.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is CWE-1188 (Initialization of a Resource with an Insecure Default) located in the LocalSettings.php shipped in the BlueSpice wiki container image. The configuration derives the token authenticator's source-address restriction from $mwsgTokenAuthenticatorServiceCIDR, which was computed as Wikimedia\IPUtils::sanitizeRange( gethostbyname( gethostname() ) . '/24' ) - the container's own /24 network - with the environment variable WIKI_SERVICE_TOKEN_AUTH_ALLOWED expected to override it. When that variable was not set, the value evaluated to an empty string rather than falling back to the container CIDR, and an empty value disables the IP restriction inside mwstake/mediawiki-component-token-authenticator, the MWStake MediaWiki component that validates internal service tokens. With the restriction disabled, token authentication is accepted from any source address, so a caller who can reach the MediaWiki REST API can mint an application token and use it to assume the internal service identity with sysop rights. The upstream fix in commit 04b840be565b508f6e741c376970909b69d2a444 changes the null-coalescing operator (??) to the short-circuiting elvis operator (?:) so an empty environment value falls back to the computed container /24; the same commit applies the identical pattern to SAML_LOG_LEVEL in the SimpleSAMLphp config. The trigger for the unsafe default is therefore a container launched without WIKI_SERVICE_TOKEN_AUTH_ALLOWED set, with exploitation reachable over the network through the wiki's REST API.

DescriptionCVE.org
Initialization of a Resource with an Insecure Default vulnerability in Hallo Welt! GmbH BlueSpice (container image bluespice/wiki) allows privilege escalation. The default value of $mwsgTokenAuthenticatorServiceCIDR in the container's LocalSettings.php was intended to restrict internal service authentication to the container network, but evaluated to an empty string when the environment variable WIKI_SERVICE_TOKEN_AUTH_ALLOWED was not set. An empty value disables the IP restriction in the token authenticator component (mwstake/mediawiki-component-token-authenticator). As a result, any user with read access to the wiki (anonymous users on publicly readable wikis) could obtain an application token from the REST API and use it to get a session with sysop privileges as the internal service user.
This issue affects BlueSpice: from 5.2.3 before 5.2.7, and the 5.2.7 container images published before 2026-10-19 15:37 UTC.

Executive ViewAI
CVE-2026-25784 is a critical privilege escalation vulnerability in BlueSpice container deployments that could allow attackers to gain sysop-level access, potentially compromising sensitive wiki content and administrative functions. The flaw is especially dangerous for publicly readable wikis, where no authentication is needed, putting all organizations using the affected image versions at immediate risk despite no observed exploitation yet.
