| Impact | This is a genuine but low-urgency privacy issue, not a system-compromise flaw. The NVD CVSS of 5.3 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N) reflects only a limited confidentiality impact - disclosure of the victim's client IP address and confirmation that a message was opened (an email read-receipt / tracking-pixel style leak) via CWE-184 (incomplete disallowed-input list). There is no integrity or availability impact and no code execution. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit are present in the input, so all three real-world exploitation signals are absent or neutral; the only exploitation evidence is the upstream fix commit's test cases demonstrating the malicious markup. One signal conflicts: NVD scored UI:N, but the description - 'confirming that the message was opened' - makes clear that the victim must open/view the crafted message for remote content to load, which is really user interaction (UI:R/UI:P); this inflates the NVD score slightly and should be treated as the lower-severity, interaction-dependent case. Net: a real, fix-worthy privacy/deanonymization bug suitable for routine patching, not an emergency. |

Remote-content blocking bypass in Roundcube Webmail before 1.6.20 and 1.7.x before 1.7.5 lets a remote unauthenticated attacker send a crafted HTML email that causes external content to load when the victim opens the message, disclosing the recipient’s client IP address and confirming that the message was read. The flaw is a privacy issue limited to metadata disclosure-no email content, credentials, or code execution is exposed-and it matters only when Roundcube’s remote-content blocking is enabled. No public exploit code was identified at the time of analysis; exploitation requires the victim to open the specific message (CVSS 3.1 UI:R).
RemediationAI
Apply the vendor-released patch by upgrading to Roundcube Webmail 1.6.20 or 1.7.5 (see https://roundcube.net/news/2026/10/19/security-updates-1.6.20-and-1.7.5); the fix commit is https://github.com/roundcube/roundcubemail/commit/96d993b4ac57166a094b5774f4761e0b905d9a05. If immediate upgrade is not possible, deploy a content filter or small Roundcube plugin that strips or blocks <svg> and SMIL <animate>/<animation> elements (or at least the by attribute) from untrusted HTML messages-this prevents the bypass but breaks legitimate inline SVG and animation in email. As a coarser fallback, force HTML messages from untrusted senders to display as plain text, trading formatting and usability for reduced exposure. Do not disable remote-content blocking as a “fix,” since that would load external content for all messages rather than eliminating the bypass.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Roundcube’s rcube_washtml HTML sanitizer rewrites untrusted HTML email before display. It inspected SVG SMIL animation attributes to, from, and values for URI values, but omitted the equivalent by attribute on <animate>/<animation> elements; therefore markup such as <svg><image><animate attributeName='src' by='http://attacker.example/a'/></image></svg> survived sanitization and caused the webmail client to fetch a remote resource. This is CWE-184 (incomplete list of disallowed inputs): the sanitizer’s URI-attribute inspection list was incomplete rather than a memory-safety or code-injection flaw. The upstream fix adds by to the inspected attribute set in program/lib/Roundcube/rcube_washtml.php and adds regression tests for src and fill animation attributes. Impact is limited to privacy metadata-client IP address and read confirmation-and only applies when remote-content blocking is active; the victim must open the specially crafted message.

Attacker needs no auth to send the email (PR:N), but the victim must open the message for remote content to load, so UI:R; only IP/read-receipt metadata leaks, giving C:L with I:N/A:N.

DescriptionCVE.org
Roundcube Webmail before 1.6.20 and 1.7.x before 1.7.5 is affected by a remote content blocking bypass. rcube_washtml inspected the SVG SMIL animation attributes to, from and values for URIs, but not by; so markup such as in an HTML message caused remote content to be loaded without the user's consent, disclosing the client IP address and confirming that the message was opened. Upstream fixed this in the commit “Fix remote-content blocker bypass via SVG SMIL by attribute”.
