MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires (1) the EvoScientist agent to ingest attacker-controlled external content - e.g. a fetched web page carrying injected instructions - and (2) the agent to delegate work to an async sub-agent path (the writing-agent or data-analysis-agent graphs per subagents/_factory) that in versions 0.1.0 before 0.2.5 has no human-approval/interrupt_on gate at all, so start_async_task can run host shell commands unattended. Per the fix, the vulnerable async thread lacks any approval path regardless of settings, so exploitation does not depend on auto_approve being enabled. Commands execute with the invoking user's OS privileges and environment secrets. Limiting factors: the attacker must get content into the agent's ingestion/fetch pipeline, the victim must actually run a task that reaches that content and delegates to an async sub-agent, and only versions 0.1.0 up to (not including) 0.2.5 are affected - upgrading to v0.2.5 is the fix. |
| Impact | The signals are largely consistent on technical severity but diverge on real-world urgency. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N, VC:H/VI:H/VA:H, score 9.3) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity flaw needing no privileges or user interaction and yielding total confidentiality, integrity and availability impact - effectively indirect remote code execution on the host. SSVC reinforces this: Technical Impact 'total' and Automatable 'yes', which fits a prompt-injection vector that can be seeded broadly in web content. However, exploitation status is only SSVC 'poc' and the input states the exploit is a reference not verified as working code, so this is not confirmed active exploitation - it is NOT in CISA KEV. EPSS is low (0.44%, 37th percentile), which conflicts with the vuln.today 'act_now' Decision label; the low EPSS reflects the product's obscurity and the youth of this CVE rather than low technical danger. Net: a genuinely high-impact authorization/approval-bypass flaw whose priority is driven by impact and automatability, not by observed mass exploitation. Note the tag labels this 'Authentication Bypass' while CWE-862 and the description describe a human-approval/authorization bypass - a classification nuance, not an auth-weakness in the login sense. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker publishes (or compromises) a web page containing hidden instructions. When an EvoScientist user runs a research task that fetches that page, the ingested content steers the agent into delegating work to an async sub-agent (e.g. writing-agent or data-analysis-agent) that lacks the interrupt_on human-approval gate; the sub-agent calls start_async_task and runs attacker-chosen host shell commands with the user's privileges and environment secrets. A public PoC reference exists (lasso.security), but it is not verified as working exploit code. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv2 – Oct 22, 2026
EvoScientist 0.1.0 up to (but not including) 0.2.5 lets an attacker reach host shell execution by delegating work to async sub-agents that carry no human-approval gate: instructions planted in ingested content such as a fetched web page can cause the agent to call start_async_task, and the resulting commands run with the invoking user's OS privileges and environment secrets. The bypass is a missing-authorization flaw (CWE-862) in the approval wiring rather than a credentials attack - per CVSS 4.0 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, all impact metrics High) and our assessed CVSS 3.1 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) it is unauthenticated and requires no user interaction beyond the agent processing the poisoned content, and per the fix the vulnerable async thread lacks any approval path at all, so exploitation does not depend on auto_approve being enabled. A public PoC reference exists; it is not verified as working exploit code, EPSS is low at 0.44% (37th percentile), SSVC marks exploitation as 'poc' with automatable/total technical impact, and the vuln.today decision label is act_now with a vendor fix in v0.2.5.
Earlier versions of this analysis (1)
EvoScientist 0.1.0 through pre-0.2.5 lets unauthenticated remote attackers execute host shell commands through its async writing-agent and data-analysis-agent sub-agents because those delegated remote threads do not inherit the interrupt_on human-approval gate. An attacker can plant instructions in content the agent ingests, such as fetched web pages, causing the agent to call start_async_task and run commands with the victim user's privileges and environment secrets; the victim must run the agent against poisoned content, but need not approve the command. CWE-862 missing authorization is the root cause, publicly available exploit code exists, and no CISA KEV confirmation is available in the supplied data.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade EvoScientist to v0.2.5 (release https://github.com/EvoScientist/EvoScientist/releases/tag/v0.2.5), which incorporates commit d249e320bd856a7d31d859cfbb2bf75bab6c8686; that commit is the complete fix because it moves the HITL interrupt_on gate onto create_deep_agent so declarative sub-agents inherit approval, forces guard_dangerous=True and refuse_delete=True on the writing-agent and data-analysis-agent async graphs that previously had no approval path, guards BackgroundExecutionMiddleware, and tightens shell-operator parsing for redirects and pipe right-hand sides (network clients and interpreters). No vendor-documented standalone workaround is listed beyond updating; the only delivery path identified is attacker-controlled content reaching the agent's ingestion/fetch pipeline and then being delegated to an async sub-agent, so until v0.2.5 is deployed the practical stopgap is to avoid feeding untrusted external pages or documents into sessions that can reach the writing-agent or data-analysis-agent async graphs, or to run EvoScientist with a least-privilege OS account and sanitized environment secrets - both of which reduce exposure but do not restore the missing approval gate, so upgrading remains the only complete remedy. Technical ContextAI · show details
EvoScientist is a LangGraph-based agent framework (create_deep_agent with HumanInTheLoopMiddleware / interrupt_on approval dictionaries) that builds composite filesystem and shell backends and spawns declarative and async sub-agents. The root cause is CWE-862 Missing Authorization: approval enforcement was attached only to the main agent, while the two research async sub-agent graphs (writing-agent and data-analysis-agent, defined in EvoScientist/subagents/_factory.py around line 116) had a remote thread with no approval path at all, so tools invoked there - including start_async_task leading to host shell execution - were never gated. The upstream fix (commit d249e320bd856a7d31d859cfbb2bf75bab6c8686, released as v0.2.5) restructures this in several ways: _build_hitl_interrupt_on returns the HITL_INTERRUPT_ON dictionary and is passed as the interrupt_on= keyword to create_deep_agent instead of being appended as HumanInTheLoopMiddleware, so declarative sub-agents inherit the gate while AsyncSubAgent specs do not hang on an approval nobody can deliver; _get_default_backend gains guard_dangerous and refuse_delete parameters, with the writing-agent and data-analysis-agent graphs passing guard_dangerous=True and refuse_delete=True so dangerous commands are guarded and recursive delete is refused and relayed to the orchestrator; BackgroundExecutionMiddleware is likewise given guard_dangerous=cfg.auto_approve. The same commit also hardens the shell-command lexer in backends.py so that redirection forms (>>, <<, >|, 2>&1, 2>>, 2>|) are not misread as pipes, and adds pipe right-hand-side screening for networking tools (nc, ncat, netcat, ssh, curl, wget, telnet, socat, scp, sftp, rsync, ftp) and interpreters (sh, bash, zsh, dash, ash, ksh), indicating the threat model includes exfiltration and piped-to-shell execution.
