1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Requires a valid authenticated principal on the server: either any user able to install a Sieve script using the editheader (addheader/deleteheader) action (introduced in 6.2.22), or any owner of a domain/account mail rule using the 'Set header value' action (from 6.0.0), including an account acting on its own rules over COM, a domain administrator, or a domain-scoped REST API key (over the REST API from 6.3.4). The server places no restriction on editing From, Sender, Resent-From, Resent-Sender, or DKIM-Signature and applies header edits before queuing a redirect/forward. The most severe outcome - a cryptographically valid, DMARC-aligning forgery - is LIMITED to cases where the impersonated address is at a domain the server hosts with DKIM signing enabled and the message carries no existing signature of that domain; outside those conditions the attacker can still spoof the From address but without a valid DKIM signature. Overall limiting factor: an authenticated account is required (no unauthenticated path), so risk is concentrated in multi-tenant/shared-hosting deployments.

Impact

This is a genuine but conditional email-authenticity (integrity) flaw rather than a top-tier emergency. The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N = 6.5 Medium) is internally consistent: network-reachable, low complexity, but requiring an authenticated low-privilege account (PR:L) and producing only integrity impact (C:N/A:N) - the harm is forged, DKIM-signed, DMARC-aligned mail, not data theft or outage. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, no SSVC decision data, and no public POC were provided, so there is no signal of active or imminent mass exploitation; per the input this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The realistic priority is elevated specifically for operators who run hMailServer as a multi-tenant / shared-hosting mail server with DKIM signing enabled, because an authenticated tenant can impersonate any other account or hosted domain with a cryptographically valid DKIM signature - a potent BEC/phishing primitive. For single-tenant or non-DKIM deployments the impact degrades to ordinary From-spoofing. Note a mild tension between the 'Authentication Bypass' tag and the actual weakness (CWE-862 Missing Authorization, exploited by an already-authenticated user) - this is an authorization/privilege-boundary flaw, not an authentication bypass.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated user on a shared hMailServer host (or a domain administrator / domain-scoped REST API key) writes a Sieve script using the editheader action - or a mail rule using 'Set header value' - to delete and re-add the From header as another account or a hosted domain's address, then triggers a redirect/forward. Because the server applies header edits before queuing the redirect and signs the first delivery pass for domains it hosts, it sends the message in the victim's name with a valid DKIM signature that passes DMARC. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, but the technique is directly reproducible from the vendor's own description.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026

Authenticated hMailServer users (6.0.0 through 6.3.6) can rewrite identity headers - From, Sender, Resent-From, Resent-Sender and DKIM-Signature - on mail the server itself sends, because the Sieve editheader action (introduced in 6.2.22) and the mail-rule 'Set header value' action apply header edits before a redirect, forward or copy is queued without any authorization check on those fields. The impact is email forgery: when the impersonated address sits at a domain the server hosts and signs for with DKIM and the message carries no existing signature of that domain, hMailServer signs the forged message on its first delivery pass and the result can align and pass the domain's DMARC policy; where that DKIM condition is not met the attacker can still spoof the From address but without a valid signature. Exploitation requires a valid authenticated principal (CVSS PR:L - a Sieve-capable mailbox, a domain administrator, an account scripting its own rules over COM, or a domain-scoped REST API key from 6.3.4), no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, there is no CISA KEV entry, and vendor release 6.3.7 addresses the flaw.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: hMailServer 6.3.7 - upgrade from any 6.0.0-6.3.6 build per https://gitlab.com/hmailserver/hmailserver/-/releases/v6.3.7; this is the only complete fix, since both the Sieve editheader path and the mail-rule 'Set header value' path must be corrected together. If upgrade must be staged, compensating controls on 6.2.22-6.3.6 are: disable or unload the Sieve editheader extension / restrict which mailboxes may install Sieve scripts (trade-off: users relying on header filtering lose that functionality, and other Sieve actions remain available); audit and strip 'Set header value' rules that touch From, Sender, Resent-From, Resent-Sender or DKIM-Signature, and restrict who may create domain or account rules via the administration console (trade-off: legitimate rule-driven rewriting and forwarding workflows break, and rule review is manual); revoke or scope down domain-confined REST API keys created on 6.3.4 or later and limit COM scripting access to the hMailServer automation interface (trade-off: integrations and delegated administration stop working); and where DKIM signing for hosted tenant domains cannot be trusted, temporarily disable DKIM signing on domains whose signer authority is not tightly controlled - this reduces the DMARC-aligned forgery to plain unauthenticated spoofing but degrades legitimate deliverability for those domains. Because the CVSS vector is AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N, prioritise internet-facing, multi-tenant and shared-hosting instances where many authenticated principals coexist, and monitor SMTP logs for redirected or forwarded messages whose From domain differs from the authenticated sender's domain.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause class is CWE-862 (Missing Authorization): hMailServer enforces authentication but never checks whether the acting principal is entitled to control the message identity fields it is allowed to rewrite. Two independent subsystems expose the same gap. First, the Sieve filtering language (RFC 5228) with the editheader extension (RFC 5293) lets a script addheader/deleteheader arbitrary fields; hMailServer's implementation blocks only Received and Return-Path, leaving From, Sender, Resent-From, Resent-Sender and DKIM-Signature fully mutable. Second, the mail-rule engine's 'Set header value' action permits the same rewrite ahead of a forward or copy, applied on behalf of whoever owns the rule - an ordinary account over COM, a domain administrator, or a domain-confined API key introduced with the REST API in 6.3.4. The severity amplifier is hMailServer's DKIM signing pipeline: the server signs a message's first delivery pass as the domain in its From header whenever it signs for that domain and the message does not already carry a signature of it. Because header edits are committed before the redirect is queued, an attacker can delete and re-add From (another account's address, or any address at a hosted domain) and redirect, yielding a message that is signed with the victim domain's key and therefore DMARC-aligned; alternatively, deleting an inbound DKIM-Signature, altering a field, and redirecting causes the server to re-sign the tampered message under the original sender's domain. The CPE entry cpe:2.3:a:progressive_robot_ltd:hmailserver:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* is an unversioned wildcard, so the precise 6.0.0-6.3.6 (mail rules) and 6.2.22-6.3.6 (Sieve editheader) ranges come from the vendor advisory rather than the CPE string.

DescriptionCVE.org

Missing authorization in the Sieve editheader action (6.2.22 through 6.3.6) and in the mail-rule Set header value action (6.0.0 through 6.3.6) of Progressive Robot hMailServer allows an authenticated user to make the server send mail as any address, DKIM-signed where the address is at a domain the server signs for. A Sieve script's editheader (addheader/deleteheader) could add or delete any header field except Received and Return-Path, and the server applies a script's header edits before it queues a redirect, so the redirected copy is sent as the script left it. The server signs a message's first delivery pass as the domain named in its From header wherever it signs DKIM for that domain and the message carries no signature of it. A script could therefore delete and re-add From - another account's address, or anyone's at a hosted domain - and redirect, so the server sent the message in that name and, for a hosted domain, signed it with that domain's DKIM key, a forgery aligned to pass the domain's DMARC; or, where another sender's domain is one the server signs for, delete the DKIM-Signature that sender's message arrived with, alter a field, and redirect, so the server re-signed the altered message as that sender's domain. editheader placed no restriction on From, Sender, Resent-From, Resent-Sender or DKIM-Signature. The editheader action was introduced in 6.2.22. In the mail-rule engine, a domain's or an account's rule's Set header value action could likewise set From, Sender, Resent-From, Resent-Sender or DKIM-Signature ahead of a forward or a copy, whoever the rule belonged to, so that an account acting on its own rules over COM, a domain administrator, or an API key confined to a domain (over the REST API from 6.3.4) could have the server forward or copy a message in the name of any address, signed, where that address is at a domain the server hosts with DKIM signing enabled, with that domain's key.
