MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires three concrete prerequisites: (1) tree item truncation must be enabled on the ic-tree-item component, since the flaw lives in truncateTreeItemLabel(); (2) the attacker must be able to influence the text of an ic-tree-item router-item slot label, supplying HTML-escaped markup; and (3) a victim must view the rendered tree so the decoded markup is parsed and executed. Limiting factors that reduce realistic risk: the vulnerable code path only runs when the non-default truncation feature is enabled (AT:P), user interaction is needed to render/view the tree (UI:P), the impact is confined to the victim's browser (Low C/I, no availability), and only the pre-release canary versions 3.0.0-canary.12 through 3.0.0-canary.47 of @ukic/canary-web-components are affected. |
| Impact | All signals point to genuinely LOW real-world risk, and they are internally consistent rather than conflicting. The vendor CVSS 4.0 base score is 2.3 (Low), driven by AC:H (high attack complexity), AT:P (a present attack requirement - truncation must be enabled), UI:P (passive user interaction required to view the rendered tree), and only Low vulnerable-system confidentiality/integrity impact (VC:L/VI:L) with no availability impact. This is a DOM-based XSS confined to the victim's browser session, not a server-compromise primitive. No EPSS score was provided in the input and the CVE is NOT on the CISA KEV list, so there is no evidence of active exploitation; a public disclosure writeup and the fixing commit diff are available, meaning exploitation detail is public but that is distinct from in-the-wild use. The input CVSS vector is a 4.0 vector (not 3.1) and contains PR:N, so exploitation does not require attacker authentication, though it does require the attacker to influence a tree item label and the non-default truncation feature to be enabled. Net: this is a low-CVSS, low-real-risk issue limited to a niche pre-release component library - patch on a routine cycle rather than as an emergency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who can influence the text of a tree item's router-item slot label (for example via user-supplied data rendered into an ic-tree-item) submits escaped HTML markup. When an application has tree item truncation enabled, truncateTreeItemLabel() decodes that text back into HTML via innerHTML, so when a victim views the tree the markup is parsed and the embedded JavaScript executes in their browser. A public disclosure writeup and the fixing commit diff exist, so publicly available exploit detail effectively exists, but there is no indication of active exploitation. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026
DOM-based cross-site scripting in the ic-tree-item component of the Intelligence Community UI Kit's @ukic/canary-web-components (pre-release versions 3.0.0-canary.12 through 3.0.0-canary.47) lets unauthenticated remote attackers execute JavaScript in a victim's browser when tree item truncation is enabled and the attacker can influence a tree item's router-item slot label. The flaw is narrow: it only triggers on the non-default truncation code path, requires a victim to render the affected tree, and is limited to low-integrity/low-confidentiality impact within the victim's browser, which is why it carries a low CVSS 4.0 score of 2.3. No public exploit code and no CISA KEV entry were identified at time of analysis; only canary builds are affected, with the fix landing in 3.0.0-canary.48.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade @ukic/canary-web-components to 3.0.0-canary.48 or later, which replaces the innerHTML assignment in truncateTreeItemLabel() with textContent (upstream commit e0eb0f16597dcb994a75c5230cd9243647ad7b3d) so escaped markup is no longer re-parsed; consult the VulnCheck advisory (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/mi6-ukic-canary-web-components-3.0.0-canary.12-before-3.0.0-canary.48-dom-xss-via-ic-tree-item) and the disclosure write-up (https://github.com/aaronamran/Public-Vulnerability-Disclosures/blob/main/2026/dom-xss-mi6-ic-ui-kit/README.md) for details. If upgrading is not immediately possible, the most effective compensating control is to leave tree item truncation disabled (the default), which removes the vulnerable code path entirely at the cost of losing label truncation behavior; alternatively, enforce strict server-side output encoding or allow-list validation on any data that populates ic-tree-item router-item slot labels so attacker-controlled text cannot carry escaped markup into the component, and only render trees containing trusted labels. Because the flaw is DOM-based and client-side only, WAF or network filtering provides little protection; a Content Security Policy that disallows inline script reduces execution impact but may break components relying on inline handlers, so test before enforcing.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The affected code lives in the ic-tree-item web component of the mi6 ic-ui-kit project, a Stencil/TypeScript component library (@ukic/canary-web-components) used to build Intelligence Community-style interfaces. The root cause is CWE-79 (cross-site scripting), specifically a DOM-based variant: truncateTreeItemLabel() took the slotted text content and assigned it to a new element using innerHTML rather than textContent, so HTML entities that had already been escaped in the router-item slot label were decoded and re-parsed as live markup. The upstream commit e0eb0f16597dcb994a75c5230cd9243647ad7b3d fixes this by switching 'newTypographyEl.innerHTML = slottedContent.textContent!' to 'newTypographyEl.textContent = slottedContent.textContent!', eliminating the re-parse. Exploitation requires the optional truncation feature to be turned on, attacker influence over a label value, and a victim viewing the rendered tree; the resulting script runs in the victim's origin with changed scope but only low confidentiality and integrity impact and no availability impact.

1DescriptionCVE.org
Intelligence Community UI Kit @ukic/canary-web-components 3.0.0-canary.12 before 3.0.0-canary.48 contains a DOM-based cross-site scripting vulnerability in ic-tree-item that re-parses router-item slot text as HTML. When tree item truncation is enabled, attackers who influence a tree item label can have escaped markup decoded by truncateTreeItemLabel() and executed as JavaScript in visitors' browsers.
