Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a victim to load an attacker-controlled safetensors model file in which the __metadata__.sshs_model_hash metadata field contains a crafted script payload; the Extra-Networks Card Builder then renders this value without output encoding, triggering stored/reflected XSS. The key limiting factor is the required user interaction (UI:P) - the attacker cannot trigger this without the victim importing/loading the malicious model, so delivery depends on social engineering or a compromised model repository. No authentication is involved (PR:N), consistent with the typically unauthenticated local webui; there is no server-side code execution and impact is confined to the victim's browser session.

Impact

This is a genuine but moderate-severity issue, not a top-tier emergency. The vendor CVSS 4.0 score is 5.3 (medium) with vector AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P, meaning network-reachable and low-complexity but gated by passive user interaction (UI:P) - the victim must load an attacker-supplied model file. The exploitation maturity metric E:P and the referenced GitHub attachment confirm publicly available exploit code exists, but there is NO CISA KEV listing and NO EPSS score was provided in the input, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation - this is a disclosed PoC, not confirmed in-the-wild abuse. The impact is narrow: the 4.0 vector sets VC:N/VI:L/VA:N, i.e. a limited integrity impact (script execution in the victim's browser) with no direct confidentiality or availability loss and no scope/subsequent-system impact. The signals are internally consistent (medium CVSS + PoC-exists + no KEV/EPSS = a real-but-targeted, social-engineering-dependent flaw). The most important caveat: because AUTOMATIC1111 webui is typically run locally without authentication, the practical risk hinges entirely on whether users load untrusted third-party safetensors models - a common behavior in the Stable Diffusion community, which elevates real-world exposure above what the raw 5.3 suggests. Note also the vendor has not responded to the issue report, so no official patch is confirmed available.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts a malicious safetensors model file whose __metadata__.sshs_model_hash field embeds a JavaScript payload and distributes it on a model-sharing site. When a victim loads the model and the Extra-Networks card is rendered, read_metadata_from_safetensors passes the unsanitized value into the page, executing the script in the victim's browser. A public PoC (a1111-sshs-hash-poc.zip) is available, lowering the barrier to reproduction.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 18, 2026

Cross-site scripting in AUTOMATIC1111 stable-diffusion-webui (through version 1.10.1) is triggered when the Extra-Networks Card Builder renders the __metadata__.sshs_model_hash field from a safetensors model without output encoding, letting a crafted value execute script in the victim's browser session. Exploitation is unauthenticated from the network perspective but requires the victim to load or import an attacker-supplied model file, so delivery depends on social engineering or a poisoned model repository, and impact is confined to the user's browser rather than leading to server-side code execution. Publicly available exploit code exists (no CISA KEV confirmation), and the project has not responded to the upstream issue, so no patched release is currently identified.

RemediationAI

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis: the project has not responded to issue 17500 and the code repository at https://github.com/AUTOMATIC1111/stable-diffusion-webui/ shows no confirmed fix, so treat remediation as compensating controls until a release lands. Primary control is supply-chain hygiene - only load safetensors models from verified sources, and inspect the __metadata__ header (e.g., unpack the JSON header and clear or reject sshs_model_hash and other free-text keys) before placing files in models/Stable-diffusion, models/Lora, or extensions folders; the trade-off is manual effort and breakage of models that legitimately use those metadata keys. Second, reduce rendering exposure by disabling or avoiding the Extra-Networks card preview/description features that display metadata, which removes the injection sink at the cost of losing model thumbnail and hash detail in the UI. Third, contain the blast radius by binding the webui to localhost (--listen off), avoiding --share/--ngrok tunnels, and never exposing the Gradio interface to untrusted networks, since the XSS executes in the origin of the webui and any reachable API; the trade-off is loss of remote access for legitimate users. Fourth, run the webui under a low-privilege account with no access to sensitive credentials or mounted data, and monitor the upstream issue and https://vuldb.com/vuln/421653 for a patched version to apply immediately when published.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability is a CWE-79 improper neutralization of user-controllable input during web page generation, in the read_metadata_from_safetensors function of modules/sd_models.py. Safetensors files carry a JSON __metadata__ header block, and stable-diffusion-webui surfaces untrusted metadata keys - here sshs_model_hash - in the Extra-Networks Card Builder UI, so a malicious model file injects markup/script that the Gradio front end renders without encoding. Because the payload lives inside a model artifact rather than an HTTP request, this behaves as stored XSS once the model is present in the models directory and its card is viewed; the script executes in the context of the local webui origin, which typically has access to loaded model data, settings, and any API endpoints exposed on that origin. The provided CPE (cpe:2.3:a:automatic1111:stable-diffusion-webui:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) confirms the whole product line is in scope with no version-bound fix, and the assessed CVSS:3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N) reflects a scope-changing but low-confidentiality/low-integrity client-side impact rather than server compromise. Note the attack surface is the browser session of whoever views the card, not the Python backend, which limits blast radius but still permits session-riding actions such as model manipulation or exfiltration of data rendered in the UI.

DescriptionCVE.org

A vulnerability was identified in AUTOMATIC1111 stable-diffusion-webui up to 1.10.1. Affected by this vulnerability is the function read_metadata_from_safetensors of the file modules/sd_models.py of the component Extra-Networks Card Builder. Such manipulation of the argument __metadata__.sshs_model_hash leads to cross site scripting. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploit is publicly available and might be used. The project was informed of the problem early through an issue report but has not responded yet.
