MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated account with the FAQ_EDIT permission (PR:L) and the ability to upload SVG files; the attacker crafts an SVG that uses an XML DTD custom entity expanding to a javascript: URI in an anchor href to bypass the SvgSanitizer component. Script execution does NOT occur on upload - it requires a victim (typically an admin) to actively view the FAQ and click the malicious anchor link (UI:P), which is the primary limiting factor. The flaw is confined to phpMyFAQ 4.2.0-alpha releases before 4.2.0-beta, so only instances running that pre-release branch are affected; stable/other-version deployments are not. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity, authenticated stored XSS (CVSS 4.0 base 5.1, CWE-79) that realistically sits below the top of any patch queue. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:P/VC:L/VI:L/VA:N/SC:L/SI:L/SA:N) agrees with the description: network-reachable but gated behind an account holding FAQ_EDIT permission (PR:L = authenticated) and dependent on a victim interacting with the malicious content (UI:P). No EPSS score was provided, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified; the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV and no POC or exploit code is referenced, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The signals are internally consistent - there is no CVSS-vs-description conflict here - but the combined requirement of an existing privileged (FAQ_EDIT) account plus victim click action meaningfully lowers real-world risk versus the raw 'network' attack vector. Primary realistic threat model is a malicious or compromised low-privilege editor escalating to an admin by hijacking an admin session, i.e. a privilege-escalation/insider or post-compromise vector rather than mass remote exploitation. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who already holds a FAQ_EDIT account uploads an SVG whose XML DTD defines a custom entity that expands to a javascript: URI inside an anchor href, bypassing SvgSanitizer. When an administrator later views the FAQ content and clicks the crafted link, the script executes in the admin's browser session, enabling session hijacking. No public exploit code is referenced, so exploitation would currently require independent development from the advisory details. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 17, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in phpMyFAQ 4.2.0-alpha lets an authenticated user with FAQ_EDIT permission upload a crafted SVG whose XML DTD entity expands to a javascript: URI in an anchor href, so script runs when a victim clicks the link and can be used to hijack an admin session. The bug is limited to 4.2.0-alpha builds before 4.2.0-beta, requires user interaction (the victim must view the FAQ and click the anchor), and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis. Rated CVSS 4.0 5.1 (CWE-79), it is a moderate-severity issue that sits below the top of most patch queues.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade phpMyFAQ to 4.2.0-beta or later, the first release outside the affected 4.2.0-alpha range, per the GitHub advisory at https://github.com/thorsten/phpMyFAQ/security/advisories/GHSA-j3v5-p957-w6gq. If upgrading immediately is not possible, restrict FAQ_EDIT to trusted users only (reduces exposure but does not eliminate risk from compromised editor accounts), disable SVG uploads or strip SVG support from the FAQ editor (may break legitimate diagram and image uploads), and re-sanitize uploaded SVG server-side with an XML parser configured to prohibit DTDs and external entity resolution, for example by rejecting documents containing DOCTYPE or ENTITY declarations; this requires custom code and must be tested against valid SVGs. Deploying a Content-Security-Policy that blocks javascript: navigation and inline script can reduce impact but may interfere with the admin UI. Because the payload is stored and can hijack admin sessions, rotate admin session cookies and review FAQ content for suspicious SVG uploads after applying the fix. If no patch can be applied, treat affected alpha deployments as untrusted and limit access to the FAQ editor to a segregated network.

Technical ContextAI · show details
phpMyFAQ is a PHP-based FAQ and knowledge-base application; the affected component is SvgSanitizer, which is intended to strip dangerous content from user-uploaded SVG images before they are stored and served. The sanitizer fails to account for XML DTD custom entities: an attacker with FAQ_EDIT can declare an entity in the SVG internal DTD subset that expands to a javascript: URI, and when the sanitized SVG is rendered the anchor href resolves to that URI. This is stored XSS (CWE-79) in which the malicious content is persisted as part of a FAQ entry; execution requires a viewer, typically an administrator, to click the crafted anchor, which is why the assessed CVSS 3.1 vector uses PR:L, UI:R, and scope changed (S:C). The CPE cpe:2.3:a:thorsten:phpmyfaq:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* is broad, but the vendor advisory and the description confine the flaw to the 4.2.0-alpha pre-release line before 4.2.0-beta; stable branches are not affected.

1DescriptionCVE.org
phpMyFAQ 4.2.0-alpha before 4.2.0-beta contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability in SvgSanitizer that allows users with FAQ_EDIT permission to bypass sanitization using XML DTD custom entities. Attackers can upload an SVG defining an entity that expands to javascript in an anchor href, executing script when viewers click it to hijack admin sessions.
