| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the deployment still uses the default hardcoded HMAC secret ('dev-secret') shipped in application.yml and consumed by JwtTokenService - i.e., the operator has not overridden the JWT signing key with a custom strong value - and that the attacker can reach the /webapi routes over the network. The specific limiting factor is configuration: any instance that replaced the default secret with a unique secret is NOT exploitable via this path, since forged tokens would fail signature verification. No valid credentials, user interaction, or local access are needed against a default-secret deployment; the Doris SQL query API is the highest-value protected route reachable once an admin token is forged. |
| Impact | All available signals point to a genuinely high-priority flaw, though some decision inputs are absent. The vendor-provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H, base 9.3 Critical) describes a remote, unauthenticated, low-complexity attack with high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact and no scope change - consistent with a complete authentication bypass. The root cause (CWE-321, hard-coded HMAC signing key) makes exploitation deterministic rather than probabilistic: the default 'dev-secret' is visible in the public GitHub source (application.yml L54-59, consumed by JwtTokenService L36-60), so any attacker can reproduce the signing key with certainty. No EPSS score was supplied, so statistical exploitation-likelihood cannot be quoted, and there is no CISA KEV listing - thus no confirmed active exploitation. No POC flag was set in the input, but a public technical write-up (hackmd) documents the forging technique in detail, which lowers the practical barrier to weaponization even absent packaged exploit code. The signals are mutually consistent (no CVSS-vs-description conflict), so the main tempering factor is not technical difficulty but deployment footprint: this is an early-stage (v0.1.x) niche product, so real-world exposure is likely limited despite the critical score. Net: treat as high priority wherever this product is internet-reachable, but weigh the small installed base when ranking against other criticals. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker locates an internet-exposed DataBuff ai-apm-web instance still using the default JWT secret, then crafts a JWT with subject 'admin' and a future expiry signed with the publicly-known hardcoded 'dev-secret'. Presenting this forged token grants full administrative access to protected /webapi routes, including the Doris SQL query API, enabling arbitrary data reads and queries. No packaged public exploit is flagged, but a public technical write-up describes the forging method and the secret is readable in the project's source, making exploitation trivial and reliable. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 16, 2026
Authentication bypass in the DataBuff ai-apm-web module through version 0.1.10 lets unauthenticated remote attackers forge administrative JWT session tokens because the application ships and consumes a hardcoded HMAC signing secret ('dev-secret') in JwtTokenService. An attacker who knows that default key can mint a token claiming the admin role with a future expiry and gain full administrative access to protected /webapi routes, most critically the Doris SQL query API, yielding high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact (vendor score 9.3; independently assessed CVSS:3.1 base 9.8 with PR:N, no privileges or user interaction required). Exploitation is conditional on the deployment retaining the shipped default secret: any instance that has replaced it with a unique strong value is not exploitable through this path. This CVE is not listed in CISA KEV and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, though a third-party technical write-up describing the flaw is publicly referenced; note that classic HS256/JWT signing bypasses are trivial to script once the key is known, so the absence of a packaged exploit should not be treated as meaningful protection.
RemediationAI
No vendor-released patch was identified at time of analysis and no fixed version is published in the provided data, so the primary, decisive action is to eliminate the hardcoded key: override the JWT signing secret in ai-apm-web configuration with a unique, high-entropy value generated for that deployment only, ensure it is not committed to source control, and restart the service - all previously issued tokens signed with the old key become invalid, which will log out existing legitimate sessions (an expected and tolerable side effect). Because the entire exploit hinges on the default secret, treat secret rotation as verification of remediation: confirm no instance still resolves to the shipped placeholder in application.yml or via environment/secret-manager overrides. Until upgraded to a release that removes the default (check upstream https://github.com/databufflabs/databuff for post-0.1.10 versions), layer compensating controls with understood trade-offs: restrict /webapi to trusted networks or a VPN and block it at the reverse proxy or firewall (roughly eliminates remote exploitation but breaks legitimate remote clients and any external integrations); rate-limit and alert on JWT validation failures and on anomalous SQL submitted to the Doris query API, since forged tokens with the correct key will validate silently and leave no signature-failure signal (detection value only, does not prevent access); and where possible constrain the database account used by the query API to least privilege so a successful forgery cannot read or destroy unrelated data (reduces blast radius but may break reporting or administrative workflows). Consult the advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/databuff-ai-apm-web-through-0.1.10-authentication-bypass-via-hardcoded-hmac-secret and the referenced source lines for affected configuration keys, and audit logs for any /webapi activity predating rotation to assess whether the bypass was already exercised.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-321, Use of Hard-coded Cryptographic Key. DataBuff's ai-apm-web component is a Java/Spring Boot service that authenticates API callers with JWTs validated by JwtTokenService (ai-apm-web/src/main/java/com/databuff/apm/web/auth/JwtTokenService.java, lines 36-60). The signing key is bound through JwtProperties (JwtProperties.java, lines 8-15) and defined in ai-apm-web/src/main/resources/application.yml (lines 54-59), where the repository ships a development placeholder secret. Because the same static secret is used both to sign and to verify tokens, an attacker who reads the public source can compute a valid HMAC signature over any self-chosen claims - no key disclosure or key recovery is required, only reproduction of the published constant. The forged token need only assert administrative authority and a future 'exp' to satisfy the verifier; the application then authorizes the request as an admin. The highest-value sink is the /webapi Doris SQL query API, which exposes SQL execution against the backing Apache Doris/OLAP data store, effectively turning the auth bypass into arbitrary data read, modification, or destructive query execution within the database's privilege scope. Affected scope per CPE cpe:2.3:a:databufflabs:databuff:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* is version-agnostic across the DataBuff product line up to and including the release that still carries the default value.

DescriptionCVE.org
DataBuff ai-apm-web through 0.1.10 contains an authentication bypass vulnerability that allows unauthenticated attackers to forge admin session tokens by using the hardcoded HMAC secret in JwtTokenService. Attackers can sign a payload of admin and a future expiry with the default dev-secret to gain full administrative access to protected /webapi routes, including the Doris SQL query API.
Executive ViewAI
DataBuff's ai-apm-web module (versions through 0.1.10) ships with a hardcoded JWT signing secret, allowing an unauthenticated attacker to mint administrator session tokens and reach protected /webapi routes, including the Doris SQL query API. Any deployment still using the shipped default secret effectively grants full administrative access to the application performance monitoring platform and the data it can query, exposing confidentiality, integrity, and availability of monitored application data. Business exposure is bounded by a single configuration decision: instances that have replaced the default secret with a unique strong value are not exploitable through this path, but no public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: rotate the JwtTokenService HMAC signing secret from the shipped default 'dev-secret' to a unique, high-entropy value and restart to invalidate existing tokens; enforce network-level restriction of /webapi routes and the Doris SQL query API to trusted management networks; enable detailed audit logging and alerting on administrative token issuance, /webapi access, and Doris SQL query activity; and monitor vendor advisories for the eventual patch release.
