Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated WordPress account with Contributor-level capability or higher (the vulnerable permission_callback can_edit() checks only current_user_can('edit_posts')), and the Wp Map Block plugin version 3.0.0 or earlier installed and active. Exploitation is limited to flipping post_status and bulk-deleting wpmb_map posts; it does not grant code execution. The key limiting factor is that sites which do not provision Contributor or higher roles to untrusted users are not realistically exposed - single-admin installations face little practical risk, whereas multi-author, membership, or guest-contributor sites are directly exposed because any such account can target maps owned by any user including administrators.

Impact

This is a genuine but comparatively low-priority issue - a medium-severity broken-access-control flaw (CVSS 4.3) rather than a critical compromise. The CVSS vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N correctly reflects the reality: network-reachable, low complexity, no user interaction, but requiring authenticated access at Contributor level or above (PR:L), with only limited integrity impact and no confidentiality or availability impact scored. No EPSS score was provided in the input and no exploitation-probability signal is available. There is no CISA KEV listing and no public POC referenced, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis'. The practical ceiling on impact is notable: an attacker can flip wpmb_map post_status between publish and draft and bulk-delete maps, which is a data-integrity/content-tampering and defacement-style problem rather than code execution or data theft. The required Contributor-level authentication is a meaningful limiting factor that keeps this well below the risk of an unauthenticated RCE, though multi-author/membership sites where untrusted users hold Contributor roles face higher relevance. One signal worth noting for the vendor/analyst: the scored impact is I:L/C:N/A:N, yet the description states draft maps can be forced publicly visible (a confidentiality angle) and maps can be bulk-deleted (an availability/integrity angle), so the real impact arguably spans more than integrity alone - verify impact scoping with Wordfence.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

On a WordPress site that allows Contributor-level accounts (e.g. a multi-author blog or membership site), a low-privileged authenticated user sends a crafted REST request to the Wp Map Block Maps_Controller set_status() or bulk() endpoint referencing a map ID they do not own - such as an administrator's published map. Because the permission_callback only checks edit_posts and performs no ownership or publish-capability check, the handler passes the attacker-controlled ID straight to wp_update_post()/wp_delete_post(), letting them unpublish and hide live maps site-wide, publish others' drafts, or bulk-delete maps. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, and exploitation requires valid authenticated access.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 16, 2026

Authenticated WordPress users holding Contributor-level access or higher can publish, unpublish, or bulk-delete any map created with the Wp Map Block plugin, including maps owned by administrators, because the plugin's Maps_Controller REST endpoints through version 3.0.0 rely on a permission callback that only checks edit_posts and never validates object ownership or publish-level capability. Successful abuse either hides published maps from every public page site-wide or forces draft maps to become publicly visible, and the bulk branch additionally deletes wpmb_map posts outright. Impact is confined to the integrity of map post status with no code execution path; no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and this is a medium-severity broken-access-control issue (CVSS 4.3) rather than a critical compromise.

RemediationAI

Upgrade the Wp Map Block plugin to a version newer than 3.0.0 as soon as a fixed release is published: upstream fix available (Trac changeset 3730836), but a released patched version could not be independently confirmed from the available data, so verify the version number in the WordPress.org plugin directory before relying on the update (https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset?reponame=&old=3730836%40wp-map-block&new=3730836%40wp-map-block and https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/b42f1f71-e272-48d4-9b3f-4360b287e16f?source=cve). Until a patched release is installed, the most effective compensating control is to remove the Contributor role, or at minimum strip the edit_posts capability, from every account that is not fully trusted - this closes the vulnerability entirely because the callback can_edit() gates on edit_posts, but it also removes those users' legitimate ability to author any post type, which will disrupt multi-author, membership, and guest-contributor workflows. A complementary mitigation is to block or filter requests to the plugin's map REST routes at the web server or WAF (for example, restricting the wp-map-block REST namespace to administrator sessions), understanding that this also breaks the plugin's own admin map-management UI. As a last resort, deactivating wp-map-block removes the attack surface at the cost of losing all embedded maps, store locators, and directory listings on the site. Because exploitation only flips post_status or deletes wpmb_map entries, affected sites should also audit their map posts for unexpected draft/publish transitions or deletions to detect prior abuse; single-administrator installations with no Contributor-or-higher accounts provisioned to untrusted users face little practical risk.

Technical ContextAI · show details

This is a classic CWE-862 missing authorization defect exposed through the WordPress REST API by the Wp Map Block plugin (CPE vendor tusharimran, plugin slug wp-map-block, distributed as the 'Wp Map Block - Google Maps, OpenStreetMap, Mapbox, Store & Shop Locator, Directory, Listings & Filters' plugin). The Maps_Controller registers REST routes whose permission_callback is can_edit(), and that function only evaluates current_user_can('edit_posts') - the baseline capability automatically granted to the default WordPress Contributor role - instead of an object-aware check such as current_user_can('edit_post', $map_id) combined with publish-level capabilities like publish_posts. Because the set_status() handler (referenced at Maps_Controller.php lines 124 and 237) and the bulk() handler (lines 63 and 262) forward a caller-supplied map ID directly into wp_update_post() and, in the delete branch, wp_delete_post(), any Contributor-or-higher account can flip a wpmb_map entry between publish and draft or remove it entirely, regardless of who authored the map. The assessed vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N confirms that the impact is limited to integrity of the map post status, with no confidentiality or availability effect and no path to remote code execution; the practical severity therefore scales with how many untrusted accounts a site provisions at Contributor level or above.

DescriptionCVE.org

The Wp Map Block plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to unauthorized modification of data due to a missing capability check on the set_status() and bulk() functions in the Maps_Controller REST controller in versions up to, and including, 3.0.0. The plugin's permission_callback (can_edit()) only verifies current_user_can('edit_posts') and performs no object-level ownership check or verification of publish-level capabilities, while the handlers pass the caller-controlled map ID directly to wp_update_post() (and wp_delete_post() in the bulk delete branch) to change post_status between publish and draft. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Contributor-level access and above, to publish or unpublish (and bulk-delete) any wpmb_map post, including maps owned by administrators, which hides published maps from all public pages site-wide or forces draft maps to become publicly visible.
