1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation is tightly constrained: the attacker must be authenticated at Subscriber level or above (PR:L), AND their account must previously have held the Administrator role, AND must have used the plugin's 'View Admin Role Switcher' feature, AND must subsequently have been demoted specifically via the wp-admin/users.php?action=promote bulk role-change control (which calls WP_User::set_role() directly) rather than via the Edit User screen. Only the bulk path bypasses the profile_update hook that would otherwise clear the stored original role, so a stale 'administrator' value remains in the nxtext_view_admin_original_role user meta. The actual trigger is the /?reset-view handler in role_switcher_to_view_admin_as(), which performs no nonce or capability check when the supplied username matches the authenticated caller. The limiting factors - the attacker-uncontrolled demotion path, the requirement of a prior Administrator history, and prior use of the role-switcher feature - are why AC is High and why typical fresh low-privilege accounts cannot exploit this.

Impact

Signals conflict, and the net real-world risk is lower than the 7.5 (HIGH) base score suggests. The CVSS vector itself encodes the key limiter: AC:H and PR:L mean exploitation requires authentication (Subscriber or above) AND a narrow, attacker-uncontrolled precondition chain. CWE-269 and the description confirm the genuine impact is full Administrator takeover (C:H/I:H/A:H), which is severe IF reachable. However, reachability is gated by an unusual prerequisite: the attacker's own account must have previously held Administrator, must have used the View Admin Role Switcher feature, and must then have been demoted specifically via the wp-admin bulk 'promote' path (not the Edit User screen) so a stale 'administrator' value survives in nxtext_view_admin_original_role user meta. This is an operator-created, order-of-events condition, not something an ordinary low-privileged attacker can arrange on demand. No EPSS score was provided in the input and the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV; no public exploit code is referenced - only the Wordfence advisory and source-code line references. There is therefore no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. Net: a legitimately high-impact privilege-escalation bug but with real-world likelihood materially reduced by the AC:H precondition chain, making it a patch-soon rather than drop-everything priority. Note the reporter (Wordfence) and vendor source are consistent; no signal conflicts the vector itself, but EPSS and exploitation telemetry are simply absent and should not be inferred.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An employee or contributor whose account was once an Administrator used the plugin's View Admin Role Switcher, then was demoted through the Users screen 'Change role to...' bulk control, leaving a stale administrator value in their user meta. Still logged in as a Subscriber-level user, they invoke the /?reset-view handler for their own username, which performs no nonce or capability check when the username matches the caller, and the plugin restores them to Administrator. No public exploit code is referenced for this CVE.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 16, 2026

Privilege escalation in the Nexter Extension WordPress plugin (all versions up to and including 4.7.11) allows an authenticated Subscriber-level or higher user to restore a stale stored Administrator role onto their own account, effectively becoming an Administrator. Exploitation is tightly constrained: the attacker's account must previously have held the Administrator role, must have used the plugin's View Admin Role Switcher, and must have been demoted specifically through the wp-admin/users.php?action=promote bulk role-change control rather than the Edit User screen. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis and the issue is not listed in CISA KEV, and the assessed conditions are why the effective risk is lower than the 7.5 (HIGH) base score implies.

RemediationAI

Upstream fix available (commit/changeset); a released patched version has not been independently confirmed from the provided data. The trunk changeset https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/3740891/nexter-extension/trunk/include/panel-settings/extensions/nexter-ext-view-admin-role.php addresses the missing nonce/capability check in role_switcher_to_view_admin_as(), so administrators should update the plugin as soon as a release incorporating changeset 3740891 is published, and can track the Wordfence advisory at https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/ae86441d-5a95-45a7-869a-9e7872365a1f?source=cve. If immediate update is not possible, disable or deactivate the View Admin Role Switcher feature (or the plugin itself) to remove the /?reset-view attack surface, accepting the loss of that functionality. As a data-level compensating control, audit and clear stale nxtext_view_admin_original_role user meta for any accounts that held Administrator and were demoted through the bulk wp-admin/users.php?action=promote control - note this is a manual, point-in-time cleanup that can be re-created if the feature remains enabled. Restricting which roles can perform bulk role changes via wp-admin/users.php reduces the demotion path that creates the stale meta, at the cost of limiting normal administrative workflows. None of these workarounds substitutes for applying the upstream fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause class is CWE-269 (Improper Privilege Management), operating in the WordPress plugin layer of the Nexter Extension - Security, Performance, Code Snippets & Site Toolkit plugin. The plugin implements a 'View Admin Role Switcher' that stores the caller's original role in the nxtext_view_admin_original_role user meta when an administrator views the site as a lower role. The /?reset-view handler in role_switcher_to_view_admin_as() (referenced in the affected file at lines 51, 265, 287 and 302 of include/panel-settings/extensions/nexter-ext-view-admin-role.php) restores that stored role without performing any nonce or capability check when the supplied username matches the authenticated caller. The plugin relies solely on WordPress's profile_update hook to clear the stored original role; however, the bulk role-change path wp-admin/users.php?action=promote calls WP_User::set_role() directly and does not fire profile_update, so a stale 'administrator' value survives in user meta after a demotion performed that way. The affected package is identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:posimyththemes:nexter_extension_-_security,_performance,_code_snippets_&_site_toolkit:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* (all versions). The CVSS 3.1 vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H matches the assessment: network reachable, no user interaction, requires low privileges, and high attack complexity reflecting the attacker-uncontrolled demotion path.

DescriptionCVE.org

The Nexter Extension - Security, Performance, Code Snippets & Site Toolkit plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Privilege Escalation in all versions up to, and including, 4.7.11 The vulnerability exists because the /?reset-view handler in role_switcher_to_view_admin_as() performs no nonce or capability check when the supplied username matches the authenticated caller, and because the plugin's only cleanup mechanism - the profile_update hook - does not fire when WordPress performs a bulk role change via wp-admin/users.php?action=promote, which calls WP_User::set_role() directly and leaves a stale administrator value in the nxtext_view_admin_original_role user meta. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers with Subscriber-level access or above to restore the stale stored Administrator role to their own account, effectively escalating their privileges to Administrator. Exploitation requires that the attacker's account previously held the Administrator role and used the View Admin Role Switcher feature before being demoted specifically through the bulk role-change control rather than the Edit User screen, as only the bulk path bypasses the profile_update hook that would otherwise have cleared the stored original role.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

The Nexter Extension WordPress plugin (versions up to and including 4.7.11) contains a privilege escalation flaw that could allow a low-privileged user to regain Administrator access under specific conditions, potentially leading to full site compromise. Exploitation requires the attacker to have previously held an Administrator role, used the plugin's View Admin Role Switcher, and been demoted via the bulk role-change control, making the practical risk lower than the 7.5 CVSS score suggests. Leadership should care because a successful exploit could result in unauthorized administrative control, data theft, or site defacement, though no public exploit identified at time of analysis.

Business Impact: Medium
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations include disabling or removing the Nexter Extension plugin if not essential, auditing and removing any lingering Administrator roles from accounts that were previously demoted via the bulk role-change control, restricting access to wp-admin/users.php bulk actions to trusted administrators, and monitoring logs for unauthorized privilege changes.
