MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Defense Evasion The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitable only when a host app embeds agentweb-core ≤5.1.6-androidx AND loads untrusted or attacker-influenced web content in the AgentWeb WebView. The malicious page must deliver an intent:// URL (INTENT_SCHEME) that DefaultWebClient parses with Intent.parseUri and launches under the host Activity's identity without sanitizing it - the pre-fix code did not strip explicit component targets, selectors, nested EXTRA_INTENT payloads, or FLAG_GRANT_READ/WRITE/PERSISTABLE_URI_PERMISSION flags - allowing the page to start the host app's own non-exported components or coerce the host into granting its ContentProvider URI permissions (intent redirection). LIMITING FACTORS: the app must actually render attacker-controlled content; the impact is confined to the host app's own component/provider surface and its granted URI permissions (not device-wide or other apps, which the OS exported-check still gates); and the host must expose sensitive non-exported components or providers for the leak to be meaningful. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity Android intent-redirection / improper-access-control flaw (CWE-284) in the AgentWeb WebView library, and the signals are mixed. The published CVSS is 5.5 with vector CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N - confidentiality-only, scope unchanged, no availability or integrity impact. Exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis': there is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no POC flag in the input (a third-party write-up at FFG0d/security-advisories documents the issue but is not weaponized exploit code). CONFLICT TO VERIFY: the published vector asserts AV:L and PR:L (local, authenticated), yet the described mechanism - malicious intent:// URLs handled by DefaultWebClient - is driven by web content rendered in the WebView, which is normally network-delivered and requires no device privileges (AV:N/PR:N). The 'local attacker' wording in the description and the AV:L/PR:L metrics should be reconciled with the vendor, because they materially change exposure. Even under the more pessimistic AV:N reading, real-world risk is bounded: impact is limited to the host app's own non-exported components and ContentProvider URI grants (not device-wide), it only matters for apps that both embed vulnerable AgentWeb and load untrusted web content, and a vendor fix exists (5.1.7-androidx, commit 9efb1519). Net: a legitimate issue worth patching for affected apps, but not a mass-exploitation priority - closer to a targeted mobile-app attack than a widespread internet-facing threat. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A host Android app embeds agentweb-core ≤5.1.6-androidx and loads attacker-influenced web content in its AgentWeb WebView; the malicious page serves an intent:// URL with an explicit component= (or URI-permission grant flags) that DefaultWebClient parses via Intent.parseUri and launches with the host app's identity, pulling up the host's own non-exported Activity or coercing it into granting ContentProvider URI permissions, thereby leaking internal data. No public exploit code was identified, though a third-party security advisory describing the flaw exists. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 15, 2026
Intent redirection and improper access control in the AgentWeb Android WebView library (agentweb-core through 5.1.6-androidx) lets attacker-influenced web content loaded inside a host app's WebView launch that host app's own non-exported components and coerce URI permission grants for the host's ContentProviders by supplying crafted intent:// URLs that DefaultWebClient parses and fires under the host Activity's identity. The vulnerability is exploitable unauthenticated and remotely with no user interaction beyond the app rendering untrusted content (assessed CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:L/A:N), although real impact is bounded by the host app's own component and provider surface and by the host exposing sensitive non-exported components or providers; components belonging to other applications remain gated by the OS exported check. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the project has released a fixed version, 5.1.7-androidx, via commit 9efb1519.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade agentweb-core to 5.1.7-androidx (and agentweb-filechooser to 5.1.7-androidx), i.e. replace implementation 'com.github.Justson.AgentWeb:agentweb-core:5.1.6-androidx' with the 5.1.7-androidx coordinate, matching Git tag v5.1.7-androidx; the fix is in commit https://github.com/Justson/AgentWeb/commit/9efb1519 and is described in https://github.com/Justson/AgentWeb/blob/androidx/releasenote.md and https://github.com/Justson/AgentWeb/releases. The patch strips selectors, nested EXTRA_INTENT payloads, and the FLAG_GRANT_READ/WRITE/PERSISTABLE_URI_PERMISSION flags from parsed intent:// URLs, and refuses to resolve non-exported components of the host app, so it closes the redirection path without disabling intent:// deep links entirely. If upgrading is not immediately possible, implement a custom WebViewClient that overrides shouldOverrideUrlLoading for both the WebResourceRequest and String signatures and rejects or sanitizes intent:// URLs before delegation - returning true and either dropping them or re-parsing with Intent.parseUri then calling setSelector(null), removeExtra(Intent.EXTRA_INTENT), and clearing the URI-grant flags; the trade-off is that legitimate hosted intent:// deep links will stop working unless allow-listed by scheme, host, and package. As a secondary control, ensure any component or ContentProvider the app intends to keep internal is not only declared non-exported but also protected by a signature-level permission, and avoid loading untrusted third-party or user-supplied URLs in the AgentWeb WebView; this hardens the app against the underlying trust-boundary problem but does not restore the vulnérable handling. Verify the delivered dependency version against the JitPack metadata (https://jitpack.io/com/github/Justson/AgentWeb/agentweb-core/maven-metadata.xml) to confirm the resolved artifact is 5.1.7-androidx or later, and consult https://github.com/FFG0d/security-advisories/blob/main/advisories/CVE-2026-95180.md for the researcher's reproduction details.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-284 improper access control in AgentWeb's DefaultWebClient, an Android WebViewClient that intercepts URL schemes on behalf of a host app. When a page navigates to an intent:// URL (Android's Intent URI scheme, INTENT_SCHEME), the affected code called Intent.parseUri(url, Intent.URI_INTENT_SCHEME) and then launched the resulting Intent from the host Activity, without sanitizing attacker-controllable fields. Because the Intent is started under the host app's UID, Android's exported-component enforcement evaluates the target against the host app itself, so an explicit component= target embedded in the URI can hit components the app intentionally declared non-exported. The pre-fix code also left intent selectors, nested Intents carried in EXTRA_INTENT, and permission-grant flags (FLAG_GRANT_READ_URI_PERMISSION, FLAG_GRANT_WRITE_URI_PERMISSION, FLAG_GRANT_PERSISTABLE_URI_PERMISSION) intact, enabling Intent Redirection in which a web page borrows the host's granted ContentProvider URI permissions. A parallel handler, queryActiviesNumber/lookupResolveInfo, resolved activities with the same unsanitized parse. The upstream fix introduces parseUriSafely(), which always clears the selector, removes EXTRA_INTENT, and strips the URI-grant flags; adds resolveAllowedActivity(), which blocks resolution of non-exported host components while preserving components of other apps so the OS check still applies; and replaces handleIntentUrl() with handleDeepLink() so intent:// handling is governed by the same mUrlHandleWays configuration as other schemes. The same commit fixes a callback-reuse bug in DefaultUIController (mAskOpenOtherAppCallback) where a reused open-other-app dialog could confirm a stale link. AgentWeb is distributed as a JitPack library, com.github.Justson.AgentWeb:agentweb-core (and agentweb-filechooser), with a v-prefixed Git tag that is dropped in the Maven coordinate. The affected-version data supplied is largely unpopulated (CPE n/a:n/a), so the authoritative version signal is the project's androidx release line and the fix commit.
