Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated, non-administrator FileRise account that owns at least one source folder and can obtain a valid CSRF token for that source folder; the attacker must also know or guess an unused destination path beneath a victim's existing folder or in the root namespace. Exploitation is LIMITED by several factors: valid authentication and a source-folder CSRF token are mandatory (not remote-unauthenticated), the destination path must be unused so pre-existing victim files cannot be overwritten, and impact is confined to relocating and rekeying ownership/ACL rather than reading victim contents (the only disclosure is a path-existence oracle from distinct pre-fix errors). The flaw is meaningful only in multi-tenant deployments with more than one distinct folder owner; single-owner installs are not realistically affected.

Impact

This is a medium-severity broken-access-control flaw (CVSS 5.4, CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N) in authorization (CWE-284), not an authentication bypass: the attacker is already an authenticated, non-administrator user with a valid CSRF token. The exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - no CISA KEV listing and no POC were provided, and no EPSS score was supplied, so widespread or automated exploitation cannot be inferred. The signals are internally consistent rather than conflicting: PR:L correctly reflects that only an authenticated folder-owner can trigger the move, and the limited C:L/I:L/A:N impacts match a flaw that relocates a folder tree and rekeys ownership/ACL records without disclosing directory listings or file contents and without overwriting victim files. One nuance worth noting: the scope is scored S:U, yet the operation crosses a per-user ownership boundary and rewrites another user's namespace, so a case for S:C (scope change) is arguable and would raise the score - treat S:U as the vendor/NVD choice, not a settled fact. Net: this is a genuine but bounded multi-tenant integrity/isolation issue, a real priority chiefly for shared FileRise deployments with multiple distinct folder owners, and a low priority for single-user or trusted-tenant installs. It is not a high-CVSS-but-trivial issue, but neither is it a drop-everything RCE.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated, non-administrator FileRise user who owns a source folder sends a /api/folder/renameFolder.php request with a valid CSRF token, setting the destination parent to another user's existing folder or the root namespace. Because the destination parent is not independently authorized, the move succeeds and the ownership and ACL records are rekeyed to the attacker-chosen path, planting the attacker's tree inside the victim's namespace. No public exploit is identified, but attack complexity is low (AV:N/AC:L), and the attacker can additionally use differing pre-fix error responses to probe whether a specific destination path exists.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 15, 2026

Improper authorization in the FileRise folder-rename API (all versions prior to 3.23.0) lets an authenticated, non-administrator user who owns a source folder move that entire folder tree beneath another user's existing folder or into the admin-controlled root namespace, with the relocated tree's ownership and ACL records rekeyed to the new path. Exploitation requires valid authentication plus a CSRF token scoped to the source folder, and the chosen destination must be unused, so existing victim files cannot be overwritten and their contents are never exposed; the only disclosure is a path-existence oracle from distinct pre-fix error messages. It is rated CVSS 5.4 (medium) and is meaningful only in multi-tenant installations with more than one distinct folder owner; no public exploit identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to FileRise 3.23.0 or later - this is the vendor-released patch for the issue, delivered via the v3.23.0 release (https://github.com/error311/FileRise/releases/tag/v3.23.0) and the fix commit cc1118923b522baff28dca05bdd79c27f984c68a (https://github.com/error311/FileRise/commit/cc1118923b522baff28dca05bdd79c27f984c68a), as documented in advisory GHSA-hhc9-q8vh-95p8. If upgrading cannot be done immediately, the actionable compensating controls are to limit FileRise accounts holding folder-ownership rights to a single trusted tenant or to suspend untrusted non-administrator accounts, accepting the loss of legitimate multi-user collaboration; disabling folder rename/move for non-admin users is an alternative but removes a core feature, and there is no configuration flag in the pre-fix code that closes only the destination-authorization gap. Be aware that 3.23.0 bundles breaking security changes beyond this CVE: OIDC identities created before 3.23.0 have no issuer/subject binding and will no longer auto-match existing local accounts, so an administrator-assisted password reset or account migration may be required (verify a working local administrator login and back up the users directory before upgrading, especially where the only administrator uses OIDC); and ONLYOFFICE save callbacks now require a valid HS256 JWT from the configured Document Server, so older or misconfigured Document Servers will fail to save until outgoing JWTs are enabled with the matching secret. ONLYOFFICE_ALLOW_UNSIGNED_CALLBACKS=1 is available only as a temporary, explicitly unsafe recovery measure and should be removed immediately after a signed save is confirmed.

Technical ContextAI · show details

This is a broken access control flaw (CWE-284) in FileRise's PHP renameFolder.php handler: the code validates the caller against the source folder, including CSRF token checks, but does not independently authorize the changed destination parent, effectively reusing an owner-rights check on the source to approve a move into a namespace the caller does not own. The operation rekeys ownership and ACL records to the new path, so a qualifying user can place their tree under a victim's folder or the root namespace; because the destination must be unused, no victim files are overwritten and no victim contents are read. Distinct pre-fix error responses act as a path-existence oracle only, disclosing no directory listing or file contents. The fix in commit cc1118923b522baff28dca05bdd79c27f984c68a (release v3.23.0) enforces destination move rights and matching ownership boundaries for cross-parent folder renames, and the same release hardens adjacent path handling by rejecting raw or encoded '.' and '..' segments in logical folder paths before ACL evaluation or storage access, rejecting trailing-dot filenames across regular, resumable, shared and WebDAV write paths, and using boundary-aware containment for local writes and archive extraction. Per the supplied CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N), the attacker is a remote authenticated low-privileged user and no user interaction is required.

DescriptionCVE.org

FileRise is a self-hosted web-based file manager with multi-file upload, editing, and batch operations. Prior to 3.23.0, FileRise /api/folder/renameFolder.php authorizes an authenticated, non-folder-scoped, non-administrator with a valid CSRF token against the source folder but does not independently authorize a changed destination parent. A qualifying user who owns a source folder can move that tree beneath another user's existing folder or into the root namespace, and the operation rekeys the moved ownership and ACL records to the new path. The destination must be unused and existing victim files cannot be overwritten. Distinct pre-fix errors reveal whether a specifically guessed destination path exists, but disclose no directory listing or file contents. This issue is fixed in version 3.23.0.
