Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires an authenticated low-privilege Swetrix account (any self-registered user suffices, PR:L) and knowledge of the victim project's public tracking ID - which is intentionally exposed in client-side tracking code and therefore not a meaningful barrier. The specific prerequisite is invoking ProjectController.addProject with the victim's projectId while supplying an attacker-created organisation, against Swetrix Cloud/self-hosted versions before 5.1.0. No user interaction from the victim is needed (UI:N) and no special non-default configuration is required. Limiting factors: the attacker must hold a valid account on the same Swetrix instance as the target, and impact is confined to individually targeted projects (one tracking ID per hijack), with no cross-system scope change.

Impact

This is a genuine, actionable access-control flaw rather than an inflated high-CVSS score. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H, 8.7) is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable, low complexity, and requiring only a low-privilege authenticated account (any registered Swetrix user), with high impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the victim project. The attack is effectively automatable - an attacker only needs a victim's public tracking ID, which is by design exposed in client-side tracking code - and the technical impact is total takeover of the targeted project (read analytics, change settings, delete), supporting a 'act'-level urgency for anyone running the affected self-hosted/cloud code. Mitigating the score, this is not unauthenticated (PR:L) and scope is unchanged (SC:N/SI:N/SA:N) - compromise is confined to the hijacked project, not the whole platform. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit were provided; exploitation status is therefore 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis,' and the absence of EPSS/KEV signals means real-world exploitation frequency cannot be gauged from the input. The root cause is confirmed by the vendor patch diff (addition of getFullProject + allowedToManage authorization checks in addProject), which independently corroborates the CWE-862 classification and the missing-authorization mechanism.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker registers an ordinary Swetrix account, creates their own organisation, then calls the addProject endpoint supplying a victim project's public tracking ID (readily obtainable from the target site's tracking snippet). Because the pre-patch addProject performed no ownership/authorization check, the victim's project is moved into the attacker's organisation, granting full control to read analytics, alter settings, or delete it. No public exploit code was identified, but the trivial, scriptable nature of the request makes practical exploitation straightforward for any authenticated user.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026

Missing authorization in Swetrix's ProjectController.addProject allows any authenticated user - including a self-registered low-privilege account - to hijack an arbitrary project by moving it into an organisation they control, simply by submitting the victim's public tracking ID. Once ownership is transferred, the attacker can read the project's analytics, change its settings, or delete it, with no victim interaction required; the only prerequisites are an account on the same Swetrix instance and knowledge of the target's tracking ID, which is intentionally exposed in client-side tracking snippets. Exploitation is limited to individually targeted projects (one tracking ID per hijack) with no cross-system scope change, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, though the flaw is a genuine, actionable broken-access-control issue (CVSS 8.7 4.0 / 8.8 3.1, CWE-862) fixed in Swetrix 5.1.0.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Swetrix to 5.1.0 or later - vendor-released patch: 5.1.0, available from the project's release page at https://github.com/Swetrix/swetrix/releases/tag/v5.1.0, with the fixing change in commit https://github.com/Swetrix/swetrix/commit/63eb76edcb446402ad1db5ff870920773f5ff588, which adds a getFullProject() lookup plus projectService.allowedToManage(project, uid) authorization check before a project can be attached to an organisation. Self-hosted operators should pull the updated backend image or rebuild from the v5.1.0 tag rather than cherry-picking, since the authorization helper must be present in the same deployment. If patching must be deferred, the most effective compensating control is to disable or restrict self-service account registration on the instance (e.g. require admin approval or invite-only signup), which removes PR:L access for unauthenticated outsiders - the trade-off is that it blocks legitimate new users and does not stop existing low-privilege accounts. Operators can additionally restrict organisation creation rights to trusted users and audit existing organisations for unexpected project memberships, though neither is a substitute for the patch. Note that rotating or obfuscating project tracking IDs is only a partial mitigation at best: the IDs are intentionally public in the client-side tracking script, so an attacker who can view any page using the tracker can still obtain them. Post-upgrade, review project ownership and audit logs for any project that was moved into an attacker-controlled organisation before the fix was applied, and treat pre-patch analytics data for affected projects as potentially tampered with or exfiltrated.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Swetrix is an open-source privacy-focused web analytics platform whose Cloud edition is built on a NestJS/TypeScript backend organised around multi-tenant 'organisations' that own projects; analytics ingestion is keyed by a project identifier embedded in a public tracking script. CVE-2026-110621 is a CWE-862 Missing Authorization defect in ProjectController.addProject (see the pre-fix source at backend/apps/cloud/src/project/project.controller.ts lines 888-920): the handler accepted a caller-supplied projectId and an organisation identifier but never verified that the requesting user actually had management rights over the referenced project. The upstream commit 63eb76edcb446402ad1db5ff870920773f5ff588 inserts the missing control - a getFullProject(addProjectDTO.projectId) lookup followed by projectService.allowedToManage(project, uid) - before the project is attached to the destination organisation. Because the check was absent, an attacker could create their own organisation and 'add' a project belonging to someone else, effectively transferring ownership and gaining full read/write/delete access to that project's analytics and configuration. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:swetrix:swetrix:* with wildcard versioning indicates the vulnerable code path applies across all Swetrix releases prior to 5.1.0, both hosted Cloud and self-hosted deployments. The CVSS 4.0 vector AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N (and the assessed 3.1 equivalent AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) confirms a remote, low-privilege, no-interaction attack with high confidentiality, integrity and availability impact confined to the vulnerable component.

DescriptionCVE.org

Swetrix Cloud before 5.1.0 contains a missing authorization vulnerability in ProjectController.addProject that allows authenticated users to hijack arbitrary projects by moving them into their own organisation. Attackers can create an organisation and add a victim project by its public tracking ID to read analytics, change settings, or delete it.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Swetrix deployments prior to 5.1.0 contain a broken access control flaw that lets a user with any account on the instance seize ownership of another organisation's analytics project by supplying its publicly visible tracking ID. Because tracking IDs are embedded in customer-facing website snippets, the identifier is effectively public, meaning affected projects can be read, reconfigured, or deleted without the owner's knowledge or interaction. Leadership should care because this directly threatens the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of customer analytics data and could trigger customer-notification and contractual obligations if exploited.
