Vulnerability Assessment

Weakness
CWE
ASVS 5.0
V15 - Secure Coding and Architecture Pointer release safety
Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires: (1) a kernel built with the CONFIG_RTL8723BS staging driver, (2) presence of the error path in rtw_sdio_if1_init() being reached during SDIO interface initialization, and (3) local access sufficient to load or re-probe the driver. The faulty free executes ONLY in the init failure path - on normal successful initialization the bug is never reached, which is a significant limiting factor. The attack is purely local (AV:L); there is no network vector and no user interaction. Realistically it is most likely to manifest as an accidental kernel memory-corruption/crash rather than a reliably weaponizable attacker-triggered primitive, and only on systems with RTL8723BS SDIO Wi-Fi hardware.

Impact

This is a low-priority, low-real-risk issue despite its MEDIUM 5.5 CVSS rating. All signals converge on low urgency: the CVSS vector is AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H - purely local, with impact limited to availability (A:H) and no confidentiality or integrity loss. EPSS is 0.17% (5th percentile), among the lowest exploitation probabilities. The CVE is NOT on CISA KEV, and no public exploit or POC is referenced in the provided data. There is no SSVC decision data supplied. The flaw (CWE-763, release of an invalid pointer - kfree() on a vzalloc()-backed buffer) only triggers on the error path of rtw_sdio_if1_init() in the rtl8723bs SDIO Wi-Fi staging driver, so it is not a straightforwardly attacker-controllable condition. One signal conflict to note: the input Tags label this 'Buffer Overflow,' which contradicts the actual weakness (mismatched free / memory corruption, CWE-763) - verify tagging. The patch set's own commit message states no runtime testing was possible and no suitable hardware was available, reinforcing that this is a static-analysis-driven hardening fix rather than an observed exploited condition.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A local, low-privileged user or process able to trigger (re)initialization of the rtl8723bs SDIO Wi-Fi driver forces the rtw_sdio_if1_init() routine down its failure path, where padapter->HalData - allocated with vzalloc() - is incorrectly released with kfree(). The resulting vmalloc/kfree mismatch corrupts kernel memory management structures, most plausibly causing a kernel crash (denial of service) consistent with the A:H-only impact. No public exploit or POC is referenced, and the local attack vector with low complexity still depends on reaching a rarely-hit init error path.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 02, 2026

A mismatched memory free in the Linux kernel's staging rtl8723bs SDIO Wi-Fi driver can corrupt kernel memory: padapter->HalData is allocated with vzalloc() but is released with kfree() on the error path of rtw_sdio_if1_init(), mixing a vmalloc-backed pointer into the slab free path. The flaw is locally triggerable by an authenticated user (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H per independent assessment) and only on systems whose kernel is built with CONFIG_RTL8723BS and that have RTL8723BS SDIO hardware; because the faulty free executes only when interface initialization fails, it is far more likely to surface as an accidental crash or memory-corruption event than as a reliable attacker-controlled primitive. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, EPSS is low at 0.17% (5th percentile), and vendor patches are available, so this is a low-priority, low-real-risk issue despite its MEDIUM 5.5 score.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patches are available: upgrade to Linux 7.3-rc1 or to the corresponding stable backport - 5.10.270, 5.15.221, 6.1.188, 6.6.157, 6.12.110, 6.18.52, or 7.2.6 - which contain the rtw_hal_data_deinit()/vfree() fix; the individual stable commits (d6158333d630a1b21d8914feaf77a6f5deb185d9, 6c017ab2b0e1b60b5be94636c94720347213d78b, 4520d673d49dabfd42c008a33889251025f7d6d5, 423574feaed192063ef0cd0813fb85425f39e539, 737c928ff5092d7e55128a232c231248fc993777, 911190f0b9511c3c81f2f2484414c1ae26f636b3, 264676418b726baca7be49171e306b6aa05cceb0, ff6d1ba247b5c62bdb678f1069abc86ad88a1402) are published at git.kernel.org/stable/c/... and advisory context is at nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-98160, vuldb.com/vuln/410198 and the EUVD record EUVD-2026-87060. Where patching is delayed, the most effective compensating control is to stop the vulnerable code from ever loading: drop or blacklist the module (modprobe.blacklist=r8723bs / a modprobe.d blacklist entry) or build the kernel without CONFIG_RTL8723BS, since the module is a staging driver for a specific SDIO Wi-Fi chipset. The trade-off is loss of Wi-Fi functionality on RTL8723BS SDIO hardware - acceptable on servers, kiosks and headless systems that do not use that radio, but not on devices that depend on it. Because the bug is confined to the interface-initialization failure path, additionally restricting local load/unload and device re-probe privileges (for example, no unprivileged module loading and no unbounded driver binding via sysfs) removes the realistic trigger paths, at the cost of limiting legitimate hardware hot-plug/recovery workflows; these are mitigations only and do not repair the allocator mismatch, so patching remains the primary action.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The affected code lives in the staging rtl8723bs driver (Realtek RTL8723BS SDIO Wi-Fi), a long-standing out-of-tree-quality driver that remains under drivers/staging. The root cause is a classic allocator-mismatch bug in the CWE-763 family (release of an invalid pointer or reference): padapter->HalData is obtained from vzalloc(), which draws memory from the vmalloc region because it must be virtually contiguous and zeroed, but the rtw_sdio_if1_init() failure path hands that same pointer to kfree(). kfree() is only valid for pointers from kmalloc()/kzalloc()-family slab allocations; passing a vmalloc address to it leaves the vmalloc region un-reclaimed while the slab allocator interprets a foreign address as slab metadata, which can corrupt allocator bookkeeping and cause use-after-free-style effects, oopses, or arbitrary memory corruption in kernel context. The correct pairing is vfree(), which the upstream fix reaches by calling rtw_hal_data_deinit() so that allocation and release paths are symmetric. Because the defect is confined to the error path, it is reachable only when the SDIO probe/initialization sequence in rtw_sdio_if1_init() fails after HalData has already been allocated, which requires the driver to be loaded and the specific failure branch to be taken on real RTL8723BS SDIO hardware.

DescriptionNVD

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

staging: rtl8723bs: fix mismatched free of HalData in rtw_sdio_if1_init()

padapter->HalData is allocated via vzalloc(), but incorrectly freed using kfree() in the rtw_sdio_if1_init() error path. Using kfree() to release this vmalloc-backed buffer can lead to memory corruption.

Use rtw_hal_data_deinit() to pair the free correctly and free HalData with vfree().

The bug was first flagged by an experimental static analysis tool we are developing for kernel memory-management bugs. Manual inspection confirms that the issue is still present in current mainline.

An x86_64 allyesconfig build showed no new warnings. As we do not have suitable RTL8723BS SDIO hardware to test with, no runtime testing was able to be performed.
