Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires local access to a system actively using the Linux NTFS filesystem driver for writes, specifically reaching write_mft_record_nolock() and hitting one of its error paths - a pre_write_mst_fixup() failure or a bio_add_folio() failure - which then leaks the kmap_local_folio() mapping. Limiting factors: the attacker must be local (AV:L) and hold at least low privileges (PR:L) sufficient to mount/write an NTFS volume; the trigger depends on these error conditions occurring, and the available sources do not describe them as attacker-controllable, so deliberate triggering is not established. Impact is limited to availability (kernel mapping-nesting corrupion / DoS); there is no confidentiality or integrity impact.

Impact

This is a low-to-moderate real-world risk that does not warrant emergency prioritization. The input CVSS of 5.5 (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) correctly frames this as a local, availability-only issue with no confidentiality or integrity impact - consistent with CWE-401 (memory leak). The intelligence signals align coherently rather than conflict: EPSS is very low (0.14%, 3rd percentile), there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit is identified - only upstream patch commits are referenced. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month' (routine patching), not act_now or emergency, which matches the signal set. The one disagreement worth stating explicitly is the metadata tag 'Information Disclosure': the CVSS vector sets C:N (no confidentiality impact) and the bug is a kmap_local reference leak that corrupts stack-ordered local mappings, which is an availability/stability problem, not disclosure - treat the 'Information Disclosure' tag as unreliable. Overall this is a genuine kernel robustness fix rather than a priority threat, with exploitability further limited to local actors who can exercise the NTFS write path and hit specific error conditions.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A local user with the ability to trigger NTFS write operations (writing to a mounted, writable NTFS filesystem) causes write_mft_record_nolock() to hit the pre_write_mst_fixup() or bio_add_folio() failure path, leaking a kmap_local mapping and corrupting the per-task stack-ordered mapping nesting. This can destabilize subsequent kernel mapping operations, leading to denial of service. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis, and the error paths are not described as attacker-controlled, so reliable triggering is uncertain.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 26, 2026

Linux kernel NTFS write error handling can leak a kmap_local_folio() mapping in write_mft_record_nolock(), corrupting per-task kmap_local nesting and producing a local availability impact. The flaw affects Linux kernel code identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* and EUVD version data covering Linux 7.1 and commit ranges fixed by 5d7f7bf8fba8cf563b42b44aa4ab3d9928ac480c and cf06dcd572845723821b54a608fc2da995c3c8e2. The provided base CVSS is 5.5, the independent assessment uses AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H and considers this a low-to-moderate risk that does not warrant emergency prioritization; EPSS is 0.14% (percentile 3%), and no public exploit was identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: apply the fixes at https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/5d7f7bf8fba8cf563b42b44aa4ab3d9928ac480c and https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/cf06dcd572845723821b54a608fc2da995c3c8e2, which EUVD maps to Linux 7.2.7 and 7.3-rc2; update to those releases or later kernels containing the commits, and use the NVD record at https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-98140 for the advisory trail. If patching is delayed, exposure depends on local write access to NTFS volumes, so limiting which local users can mount or write NTFS filesystems reduces the chance of reaching the vulnerable error paths, at the cost of restricting legitimate NTFS and removable-media write workflows; the available sources do not describe another vendor workaround.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The Linux NTFS driver writes MFT records through write_mft_record_nolock(), which uses kmap_local_folio() to create a temporary kernel mapping of the record folio. The pre_write_mst_fixup() and bio_add_folio() failure paths jump to the error label without unmapping that folio; because kmap_local mappings are stack-ordered per task, leaking one mapping corrupts the nesting for any outer mapping and can lead to availability problems. This is CWE-401 missing release of memory after effective lifetime, not a confidentiality or integrity issue. CPE cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* is a wildcard and does not identify a single distribution build; whether a given kernel is affected depends on whether it includes the vulnerable NTFS code and whether the referenced fixes have been backported. The independent assessment raises attack complexity to high because the sources do not establish that an attacker can deliberately force the pre_write_mst_fixup() or bio_add_folio() failure paths.

DescriptionNVD

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

ntfs: fix kmap_local leak in write_mft_record_nolock() error paths

write_mft_record_nolock() maps the MFT record folio with kmap_local_folio(), but the pre_write_mst_fixup() and bio_add_folio() failure paths jump to the error label without unmapping it. kmap_local mappings are stack-ordered per task, so leaking one corrupts the nesting for any outer mapping.

Unmap the folio on those error paths too.
