Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires local, authenticated access (PR:L) on a system where the Intel AVS (Smart Sound Technology) ASoC driver is present and loaded - i.e., hardware with the Intel DSP audio stack, not arbitrary Linux hosts. The attacker must drive strace_open() so that try_module_get() succeeds and then a subsequent operation fails, leaking the reference; reaching that specific error path is the practical limiting factor. There is no remote vector (AV:L) and no user interaction. Limiting factors: requires a valid local account, the specific vulnerable kernel version, the avs driver actually in use, and repeated triggering of the failure path to accumulate leaked references into a meaningful availability impact.

Impact

This is a low-to-moderate priority local availability issue, not a widespread emergency. The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, base 5.5) describes a locally exploitable flaw requiring an authenticated low-privileged user, with no confidentiality or integrity impact - only availability. EPSS reinforces low concern at 0.17% (5th percentile), there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit was identified, so the exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' All signals are consistent and point toward low real-world risk: the only divergence is the input 'Information Disclosure' tag, which directly contradicts the CVSS confidentiality metric (C:N) and the actual defect (a module reference-count leak), so that tag should be disregarded. No SSVC decision data was supplied. One caveat on severity: the upstream A:H rating is arguably generous - an unbalanced try_module_get() refcount leak prevents the avs module from being unloaded and slowly wastes a resource, rather than crashing a running system, so the practical availability impact is lower than a 'High' would suggest. Verify realistic impact against the specific deployment before prioritizing.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A local, authenticated low-privileged user with access to an Intel Smart Sound Technology (AVS) audio device repeatedly opens the ASoC avs interface along a path where strace_open() first calls try_module_get() and then a follow-up operation fails, leaking one module reference each time. Over many iterations this pins the module reference count so the driver can no longer be unloaded, degrading availability. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 06, 2026

An unbalanced module reference count in the Linux kernel's Intel AVS (Audio, Voice, Speech) ASoC audio driver lets a local, authenticated user leak a module reference every time a specific error path in the driver-open routine is hit, which over repeated triggering can leave the driver module permanently pinned and degrade availability (module unload/reload fails). Only systems running a vulnerable kernel build with the Intel AVS DSP audio stack present and loaded are exposed, and our assessed vector is CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L, a low-to-moderate priority local availability issue rather than a widespread emergency. EPSS is 0.17% (5th percentile), the issue is not in CISA KEV, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis; vendor-released patches exist in stable 6.12.111, 6.18.53 and 7.2.7 plus mainline 7.3-rc3.

RemediationAI

Apply the vendor-released kernel patch by upgrading to a fixed build: stable 6.12.111, 6.18.53 or 7.2.7, or mainline 7.3-rc3, or any later distribution kernel that backports the fix; alternatively cherry-pick the upstream fixes referenced in the advisory at https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/3fcf670f023d47e4eb970fb886ee562b5bdfbee7, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/23ebd4ed5799340f1d2193195c97f61d39aa9899, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/60b396b2aeca303bc468937d2b44a82399f37b3c and https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/d4fa6f94b91137e329ea3f5b360e140b227bb696, or consult the NVD entry at https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-98054 for the consolidated record. Where the Intel AVS audio stack is not required, the practical compensating control is to prevent the driver module from loading (modprobe blacklist or kernel module signature/policy restriction), which removes the vulnerable open path but disables Intel DSP/Smart Sound Technology audio on the affected machine. Restrict untrusted local logins on hosts that must keep the driver, since exploitation requires an authenticated local account (PR:L) on matching hardware, and monitor for repeated failed driver-open attempts in audit/kernel logs as a detection signal; note that since no public exploit identified at time of analysis and the EPSS score is only 0.17%, emergency out-of-band patching is not warranted relative to higher-priority exposures.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The affected code is part of the ALSA SoC (ASoC) framework's Intel AVS machine driver, which manages the Intel DSP/Smart Sound Technology audio path on supported platforms. The vulnerable routine takes a reference on the driver module via try_module_get() during its open path, and if a later step in that same path fails, the corresponding module_put() is never executed, leaving the module reference count permanently elevated. No CWE identifier is assigned in the supplied data, but the pattern is the classic improper reference-count update / missing release on an error path (the CWE-911/CWE-772 class), where a success-then-failure sequence silently leaks a resource. The EUVD version data points to the pre-fix commit 0a5fb3cc28fda52c761775db2ccb7ccb954aee2a as the baseline and lists the fixing commits 3fcf670f023d47e4eb970fb886ee562b5bdfbee7, 23ebd4ed5799340f1d2193195c97f61d39aa9899, 60b396b2aeca303bc468937d2b44a82399f37b3c and d4fa6f94b91137e329ea3f5b360e140b227bb696, with one EUVD entry citing Linux 6.7 as the affected line and stable/mainline patch versions 6.12.111, 6.18.53, 7.2.7 and 7.3-rc3. Exploitation is local only: the CVSS vector requires local access with low privileges (AV:L/PR:L), no user interaction, and no confidentiality or integrity impact; only availability is affected, and in our assessment at the Low level rather than the High level carried by some published feeds. Reaching the exact success-followed-by-failure sequence is the practical limiting factor, and the impact only becomes meaningful when the leak is triggered repeatedly against a kernel where the avs driver is actively in use.

DescriptionNVD

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

ASoC: Intel: avs: Fix unbalanced module reference count

strace_open() invokes try_module_get() which on success takes the module reference. If any follow up operation causes strace_open() to fail, the refcount shall be put down.
