Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

Requires local access to a Video4Linux2 mem2mem device backed by a driver that implements a stateless AV1 decoder (submits V4L2_CTRL_TYPE_AV1_FRAME controls) - typically membership in the 'video' group and presence of AV1 hardware/decoder support, which is uncommon. The attacker must submit a control whose tile_info.tile_cols or tile_rows exceeds V4L2_AV1_MAX_TILE_COLS/_ROWS, or whose product exceeds V4L2_AV1_MAX_TILE_COUNT, and a consuming driver must process it. Limiting factors: no network vector (AV:L), authentication/local privilege required (PR:L), no default-config remote exposure, and the affected code path exists only on kernels 6.5 through the fixed stable releases with AV1 stateless decode enabled. Zero tile counts remain accepted (to preserve existing userspace), so only out-of-range values trigger the rejection/hardening.

Impact

This is a local, config/access-gated memory-safety bug in the Linux kernel V4L2 control framework, not a network-exploitable issue. The NVD CVSS 7.8 (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/C:H/I:H/A:H) rates it as HIGH with full confidentiality/integrity/availability impact, but that overstates realistic risk: the flaw is a missing bounds check on attacker-supplied AV1 tile counts consumed by stateless AV1 decoder drivers, and the dominant outcome is out-of-bounds array access leading to memory corruption and a kernel crash (DoS) rather than reliable C:H/I:H code execution. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit are present in the input, so there is no signal of active or imminent exploitation. Exploitation additionally requires local access to a V4L2 mem2mem device that actually implements a stateless AV1 decoder - a niche hardware/driver path - which further constrains real-world reach. My independent assessment lands around 5.0 (AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/C:N/I:L/A:H). Net: a legitimate kernel hardening fix worth patching in normal cycles, but a low real-world priority compared to its 7.8 label; treat C:H/I:H claims with skepticism absent an exploitation writeup.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A local user with access to a V4L2 stateless AV1 decoder device (/dev/videoN, typically the 'video' group) submits a crafted V4L2_CTRL_TYPE_AV1_FRAME control whose tile_cols/tile_rows (or their product) exceed the AV1 tile maxima. The unvalidated values are used as loop bounds and array indices into the decoder's mi_*_starts[]/*_in_sbs_minus_1[] structures and to size per-tile descriptor buffers, causing out-of-bounds access and a kernel crash or memory corruption. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis; attack complexity is elevated by the need for a specific decoder-capable device and carefully crafted control values.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026

Out-of-range AV1 tile geometry submitted through the Video4Linux2 stateless-decoder control interface is not bounded by the kernel's compound-control validator in Linux 6.5 and later, so a local user who can open a mem2mem AV1 decode device can drive loop bounds, array indices, a divisor, and per-tile descriptor buffer sizing with attacker-controlled tile_cols/tile_rows values. The flaw is reachable only locally, requires an account with access to the relevant /dev/video* node (typically 'video' group membership) and a driver implementing a stateless AV1 decoder, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis; the risk is therefore a config- and access-gated kernel memory-safety issue rather than a network-exploitable one. Exploitation prerequisites plus high attack complexity and the absence of any confidentiality impact keep the practical risk below the 7.8 score shown in some feeds - no vendor advisory has flagged active exploitation (not listed in CISA KEV).

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: update to Linux 6.12.111, 6.18.53 or 7.2.7 (or 7.3-rc3 for the mainline development branch); the validating fix is the v4l2-ctrls change that rejects AV1 frames whose tile_cols/tile_rows exceed V4L2_AV1_MAX_TILE_COLS/_ROWS or whose product exceeds V4L2_AV1_MAX_TILE_COUNT, and it deliberately continues to accept zero tile counts so existing userspace initialisation is unaffected. Backport or cherry-pick the stable commits 85df9fc79b07f1cc7c953f930ae7e675d0c1e820, c8891da0186fe4c04bccbbd7d84b01a3c941ac7a, c4c88b5ba85685043d171e0e9c9d00a8cf6a89e8 and 439058ced617fbb3febc017b9e93bb7387f309e0 if a full distribution upgrade is not immediately possible, and track distribution advisories referencing CVE-2026-97575 / EUVD-2026-86883. If patching must be deferred, compensate by removing untrusted accounts from the 'video' group and tightening permissions on /dev/video* nodes (this blocks the attack but also breaks legitimate camera/media capture for those users), by blacklisting or not loading the module for the mem2mem stateless AV1 decoder so the vulnerable control type is never reachable (trade-off: AV1 hardware-accelerated decoding becomes unavailable and media pipelines that rely on it will fall back to software or fail), and by not passing attacker-supplied AV1 bitstreams into local decode utilities running on the host (restricting local untrusted-code execution, at the cost of limiting media-transcoding workflows). Because exploitation requires local privilege and a privileged media device, isolating such workloads in containers or VMs without the AV1 decode device passed through removes the exposure entirely, though hardware-accelerated decode is then unavailable inside those environments.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The Video4Linux2 control framework lets userspace configure complex decoder state through compound controls, and V4L2_CTRL_TYPE_AV1_FRAME is the container that carries stateless AV1 parsing parameters, including tile_info.tile_cols and tile_info.tile_rows. These two u8 fields are subsequently treated as fully trusted by consuming drivers: they are used as loop bounds, as indices into the mi_cols_starts[]/mi_rows_starts[] and the corresponding *_in_sbs_minus_1[] arrays, as the divisor for context_update_tile_id, and their product bounds the allocation/sizing of per-tile descriptor buffers. The kernel's generic std_validate_compound() path did not validate these fields, so the fix adds explicit rejection of any V4L2_CTRL_TYPE_AV1_FRAME whose tile_cols or tile_rows exceeds V4L2_AV1_MAX_TILE_COLS / V4L2_AV1_MAX_TILE_ROWS, or whose product exceeds V4L2_AV1_MAX_TILE_COUNT, while deliberately still accepting a zero tile count so that the zero-initialised controls existing userspace already submits keep working. The defect class is missing validation of attacker-influenced input to a kernel control interface that then flows into out-of-bounds indexing and sizing logic (the CNA supplied no CWE, though it maps to the improper-input-validation / out-of-bounds family, and one feed tag labels it 'Information Disclosure', which is narrower than the memory-safety concern implied by the affected array accesses). The code path exists only on kernels 6.5 through the fixed stable releases and only when a stateless AV1 decoder driver is present; the upstream advisory's 7.8 score (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/C:H/I:H/A:H) is more pessimistic than this assessment, which treats attack complexity as high and confidentiality impact as none (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:H) given the gated local prerequisites and the unconfirmed memory-write path.

DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

media: v4l2-ctrls: validate AV1 tile counts

The stateless AV1 decoders use tile_info.tile_cols and tile_rows as loop bounds and as indices into the mi_*_starts[] and *_in_sbs_minus_1[] arrays, as the divisor for context_update_tile_id, and their product bounds the per-tile descriptor buffers, but std_validate_compound() does not bound these u8 fields. Reject a V4L2_CTRL_TYPE_AV1_FRAME whose tile_cols or tile_rows exceeds V4L2_AV1_MAX_TILE_COLS / _ROWS, or whose product exceeds V4L2_AV1_MAX_TILE_COUNT. A zero tile count is left to the consuming driver so the zero-initialised control that existing userspace submits is still accepted.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A memory-safety flaw in Linux kernel 6.5 and later affects systems where local users can access AV1 stateless-decoder video devices, potentially causing kernel memory corruption, crashes, or other integrity and availability impacts on those hosts. Because the issue is local-only, gated by device permissions and driver support, and has no public exploit identified at time of analysis, leadership should prioritize inventory, permission tightening, and vendor patching of affected multi-user Linux systems rather than treat it as a network-wide emergency.
