Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires an authenticated account with Contributor-level privileges or higher on the target WordPress site (PR:L), and the payload is delivered through the 'not_found' parameter handled by Download Manager's shortcode processing (src/Package/Shortcodes.php). The stored script executes when any user subsequently views the injected page. Limiting factors: this cannot be exploited by unauthenticated or Subscriber-only users, so sites that do not grant Contributor accounts to untrusted parties (e.g., single-author or admin-only blogs) face sharply reduced risk; affected versions are 3.3.58 and earlier, with the fix in 3.3.59.

Impact

This is a moderate-severity, authenticated Stored XSS (CWE-79) in the WordPress Download Manager plugin, with a provided CVSS 3.1 score of 6.4 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N). The network vector and low attack complexity favor exploitation, but the PR:L requirement meaningfully constrains real-world risk: an attacker needs at least Contributor-level access to the WordPress site, so this is not an unauthenticated internet-facing flaw. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC was supplied in the intelligence set, so there is no signal of active or widespread exploitation - exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The signals are internally consistent (a scope-change stored XSS with limited C/I impact and no availability impact maps cleanly to 6.4), with no contradiction between the CVSS vector and the description. Overall this is a 'genuine but not emergency' issue: dangerous on multi-author sites where low-trust Contributor accounts exist, but low priority on single-admin or tightly-controlled installations. The main unknown is the absence of exploitation-probability data (EPSS) and vendor/CISA exploitation confirmation.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

On a multi-author WordPress site running Download Manager 3.3.58 or earlier, an attacker who holds (or phishes/registers into) a Contributor account submits content containing a malicious payload in the 'not_found' parameter of a Download Manager shortcode. Because input is insufficiently sanitized and output is not escaped, the script is stored and later executes in the browser of any user - including a higher-privileged administrator - who views the affected page, enabling session theft or admin-action abuse. No public exploit code was identified, so an attacker would need to craft the payload manually.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 10, 2026

Stored cross-site scripting in the WordPress Download Manager plugin (codename065, versions up to and including 3.3.58) lets authenticated attackers with Contributor-level access or higher inject arbitrary JavaScript through the 'not_found' parameter processed by the plugin's shortcode handler; the stored script then runs in the browser of any user who views the injected page. The flaw is rooted in insufficient input sanitization and output escaping (CWE-79), has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 6.4 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N), and is corrected in version 3.3.59. Unauthenticated and Subscriber-only users cannot trigger it, and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade the Download Manager plugin to version 3.3.59 or later, which contains the escaping/sanitization correction to src/Package/Shortcodes.php (see the upstream changeset at https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset?old_path=download-manager/tags/3.3.58/src/Package/Shortcodes.php&old=3574454&new_path=download-manager/tags/3.3.59/src/Package/Shortcodes.php&new=3588497 and the advisory at https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/d57e11e8-de23-469e-9b96-3fc24b03bf98?source=cve); verify the installed version from the WordPress Plugins screen and update through the dashboard or WP-CLI. Where immediate upgrading is not possible, compensate by removing or deactivating the Download Manager plugin until patched - effective but it disables download functionality on the site. If the plugin must stay active, restrict Contributor and higher roles to fully trusted users and audit existing accounts, since the flaw cannot be reached by unauthenticated or Subscriber-level users; note that this is a policy control and does not eliminate risk if any Contributor account is compromised. Additionally, deploy a web application firewall rule that blocks or neutralizes the literal 'not_found' attribute in shortcode input and consider a Content Security Policy that limits inline script execution, while accepting that CSP may break legitimate plugin or theme scripts. Finally, review and sanitize previously stored posts and pages containing Download Manager shortcodes to remove any payloads injected before the fix was applied.

Technical ContextAI · show details

This is a persistent (stored) cross-site scripting issue, CWE-79, in the WordPress Download Manager plugin maintained by codename065. The plugin renders download listings through shortcodes, and the 'not_found' attribute supplied to that shortcode is written into generated HTML without adequate sanitization on input and escaping on output; the vulnerability is located in src/Package/Shortcodes.php. Because the unescaped value is preserved in stored post content, the injected script executes in the origin of the affected WordPress site whenever a victim loads the page, which is why the CVSS vector carries a scope change (S:C) - the vulnerable component (shortcode processing) impacts resources beyond its own security authority, affecting other site users. The CPE string cpe:2.3:a:codename065:download_manager identifies the plugin across all releases through 3.3.58; the upstream Trac changeset for 3.3.59 modifies the same Shortcodes.php file, confirming that the fix is an escaping/sanitization correction applied at that version boundary. Exploitation requires an authenticated account with at least the WordPress Contributor role, which can create content containing the malicious shortcode but cannot publish it; the payload still reaches victims when the stored page is rendered or previewed, and contributors are typically untrusted on multi-author sites, so exposure depends on the site's role-provisioning policy.

DescriptionCVE.org

The Download Manager plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'not_found' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 3.3.58 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page.
