| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an application built on the affected ASP.NET Core Blazor WebAssembly Server component (Microsoft.AspNetCore.Components.WebAssembly.Server 10.0.0 to <10.0.13, or apps produced by the vulnerable Visual Studio 2026 18.10.x and 2022 17.14.x toolchains) that renders attacker-influenced input into a web page without proper HTML encoding/neutralization. The key limiting factor is mandatory user interaction (CVSS UI:R): a victim must load or interact with the attacker-crafted content in a browser for the script to execute. No attacker authentication is required (PR:N) and the attack is network-delivered (AV:N), but SSVC marks it non-automatable, so each compromise depends on social delivery to and interaction by a target user rather than mass scanning. |
| Impact | This is a CWE-79 cross-site scripting flaw in ASP.NET Core (specifically the Microsoft.AspNetCore.Components.WebAssembly.Server hosting component and the Visual Studio toolchain that ships it). The input CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, base 8.8) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated issue requiring user interaction, with Microsoft rating full confidentiality/integrity/availability impact. These signals conflict with the typical XSS profile and with CISA's SSVC read: SSVC records Exploitation=none, Automatable=no, Technical Impact=total. The 'Automatable=no' and 'UI:R' both indicate exploitation is not scalable/wormable and depends on luring a victim, while 'Technical Impact=total' aligns with Microsoft's C:H/I:H/A:H. There is no EPSS score provided, no CISA KEV listing, and no POC referenced - so by the precision rules this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' Net: a genuinely high-severity vulnerability in very widely used Microsoft web technology and a worthwhile patch priority, but current real-world urgency is tempered by the absence of known exploitation, the non-automatable nature, and the mandatory user interaction. Note also a signal tension worth verifying with the vendor: the description phrases this as an attacker able to 'execute code over a network,' and Microsoft scores it C:H/I:H/A:H with scope unchanged (S:U), which is unusually high for a classic reflected/stored XSS - independent assessors frequently score XSS lower and with a scope change, so treat the 'total impact' rating as vendor-assigned rather than independently confirmed. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts malicious input (e.g., a link or data field) that an ASP.NET Core / Blazor WebAssembly Server application renders into a web page without proper neutralization. When a victim user interacts with the crafted content in their browser, the injected script executes in the application's context, allowing session/data theft or actions on the user's behalf. No authentication is required of the attacker per the CVSS vector (PR:N), but victim interaction (UI:R) is mandatory; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 13, 2026
Cross-site scripting (CWE-79) in the ASP.NET Core Blazor WebAssembly Server hosting component allows an unauthenticated, network-based attacker to execute arbitrary script in a victim's browser session by getting attacker-influenced input rendered into a web page without proper HTML neutralization. Affected are applications built on Microsoft.AspNetCore.Components.WebAssembly.Server 10.0.0 through <10.0.13, as well as apps produced by the vulnerable Microsoft Visual Studio 2026 18.10.x (<18.10.4) and Visual Studio 2022 17.14.x (<17.14.42) toolchains. Exploitation is not automatable per CISA SSVC and requires mandatory user interaction (CVSS UI:R) - the victim must load or interact with the crafted content - and no public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis; vendor patches are available, so risk is primarily to unpatched, internet-facing Blazor WebAssembly deployments.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade Microsoft.AspNetCore.Components.WebAssembly.Server to 10.0.13 or later, and update build toolchains to Microsoft Visual Studio 2026 18.10.4 or later and Visual Studio 2022 17.14.42 or later, following the Microsoft Security Response Center advisory at https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-96230. Because the runtime component may ship inside published applications, redeploying rebuilt artifacts is required - patching the developer workstation alone does not remediate already-published apps. In parallel, apply the code-level fix class for CWE-79 in application code: HTML-encode or otherwise contextually neutralize all attacker-influenced values rendered into Blazor/Razor output, and avoid raw markup insertion paths (e.g., MarkupString or direct HTML concatenation) for untrusted data. Where patching cannot be completed immediately, compensating controls include deploying a Content-Security-Policy that blocks inline and unauthorized script execution, setting HttpOnly and SameSite on session cookies to limit script-driven session theft, and placing the affected application behind a WAF with XSS rules; these reduce but do not eliminate impact and can break legitimate inline scripts and client-side functionality, so they should be treated as temporary. Given no public exploit or active exploitation is currently identified, prioritization should be driven by exposure of unpatched Blazor WASM endpoints rather than emergency response.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-79, improper neutralization of input during web page generation, in the ASP.NET Core Blazor WebAssembly hosting stack - specifically the Microsoft.AspNetCore.Components.WebAssembly.Server component that serves the Blazor WASM client and injects server-side content into the rendered page. When an application passes attacker-controllable data into page output without correct HTML/attribute/JavaScript-context encoding, the injected markup is interpreted by the browser and scripts run with the origin's privileges. The CPE/affected-version data ties the defect not only to the runtime package but also to the Visual Studio 2026 18.10.x and Visual Studio 2022 17.14.x toolchains, meaning the vulnerable code path can be introduced at build/publish time as well as at runtime. The CVSS vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N confirms network delivery, low attack complexity, no required authentication (PR:N), and a scope change (S:C) that reflects the cross-origin/browser-boundary impact of script execution, while integrity and confidentiality effects are limited to the victim's browser session. Note the vendor/description score of 8.8 differs from the independent assessment's broader but more constrained reading; the exploitability gate is the mandatory user interaction, not a missing privilege check.

Executive ViewAI
Microsoft's ASP.NET Core Blazor WebAssembly Server hosting component contains a cross-site scripting flaw that allows an attacker to run arbitrary script in a victim's browser session when crafted content is rendered in an affected page, putting session data and any sensitive information handled by those Blazor WebAssembly applications at risk. Because the affected component is embedded in both deployed applications (10.0.0 through <10.0.13) and the Visual Studio 2026 18.10.x and Visual Studio 2022 17.14.x build toolchains used to produce them, development teams, not just operations, are in scope for remediation. Exploitation requires the victim to load or interact with crafted content and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, so the immediate exposure is concentrated in unpatched, internet-facing Blazor WebAssembly deployments rather than the entire estate.
