| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires: (1) an authenticated MISP account (PR:L) to reach the AnalystDataController::viewForObject / __hub action; (2) the target MISP instance running the Overmind theme, since the vulnerable sink is app/View/Themed/Overmind/Elements/AnalystData/thread.ctp specifically; (3) a separate authenticated victim who must actively click the attacker-supplied crafted URL (UI:A). The injection point is the parent object-type URL parameter, interpolated via strtolower($objectType) into the translated strings 'No analyst data attached to this %s yet.' and 'this %s' without h() encoding. Limiting factors: it is not remote-unauthenticated, it is not automatable against many victims at once, impact is confined to the victim's browser within the MISP origin, and instances not using the Overmind theme may not be affected. Affected versions are before 2.5.47. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but low-to-moderate priority issue. The vendor CVSS 4.0 base score of 4.8 reflects the real limiting factors encoded in the vector: PR:L (authenticated attacker) and UI:A (the victim must actively navigate to an attacker-crafted URL). Impact is bounded - VC:N/VI:N/VA:N on the MISP system itself, with only SC:L/SI:L on the subsequent system (the victim's browser session), which is exactly what a reflected XSS delivers. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code were provided, so there is no signal of active or automatable exploitation; the source-code diff is the only strong corroborating evidence. SSVC-style reasoning: exploitation=none observed, automatable=no (requires a per-victim social-engineering step to deliver the crafted URL), technical impact=partial. There is no conflict between the CVSS vector and the description - both agree on network delivery, authenticated attacker, and mandatory user interaction. The patch is confirmed (commit 23b879073), so the practical priority is 'patch on normal cadence' rather than emergency response, weighted by how sensitive the MISP instance's data and users are. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated but low-privileged MISP user crafts a URL to the AnalystData thread view with a malicious parent-object-type parameter containing JavaScript, then lures another logged-in MISP user (e.g. an analyst or admin) into clicking it. When the victim's browser renders the unencoded parameter inside the translated strings, the attacker's script executes in the MISP application origin, allowing session/data theft or actions performed as the victim. No public exploit code was provided, but the fixing commit diff clearly reveals the exact unencoded sink. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 22, 2026
Reflected cross-site scripting in MISP before 2.5.47 lets an authenticated user craft a URL against the AnalystDataController::viewForObject (__hub) action whose parent object-type parameter is echoed unencoded into the Overmind theme's AnalystData thread element, so an authenticated victim who clicks the link has arbitrary JavaScript executed in their browser within the MISP origin. The attacker must hold a valid MISP account (CVSS PR:L) and the instance must be running the Overmind theme, while the victim must actively follow the crafted URL (UI:A); impact is scoped to the victim's session and page, not the server. No public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis, and a vendor fix is available in the 2.5.47 release line via commit 23b879073. This is a genuine but low-to-moderate priority issue given the authentication, theme, and user-interaction prerequisites.
RemediationAI
Upgrade MISP to 2.5.47 or later, which is the first release outside the affected <2.5.47 range and contains the vendor fix; the same changes can be reviewed and backported from commit https://github.com/MISP/MISP/commit/23b879073, which adds an AnalystData::valid_targets allow-list check in app/Controller/AnalystDataController.php and applies h() output encoding at both interpolation points in app/View/Themed/Overmind/Elements/AnalystData/thread.ctp. Vendor-released patch: 2.5.47 (via commit 23b879073). If immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to stop using the Overmind theme in favour of the default MISP theme, since the vulnerable sink exists only in that themed element - at the cost of losing the Overmind UI customisation; otherwise, restrict access so that only fully trusted users with MISP accounts can reach the AnalystData view/hub endpoints (e.g. by limiting network exposure or role assignment), acknowledging that this does not remove the flaw and only reduces the pool of potential attackers and victims. Because exploitation requires an authenticated victim to click an attacker-supplied link, user awareness and link-hygiene controls offer marginal additional risk reduction, but patching remains the definitive fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
MISP is a PHP application built on the CakePHP MVC framework, and the affected code path lives in app/Controller/AnalystDataController.php, whose __hub/viewForObject action accepted a parent object-type parameter straight from the URL instead of restricting it to the set of valid AnalystData targets. That unsanitised value reached app/View/Themed/Overmind/Elements/AnalystData/thread.ctp, where it was passed through strtolower() and interpolated into two translated strings ('No analyst data attached to this %s yet.' and 'this %s') that are emitted directly into the HTML response. The root cause class is CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation, i.e. cross-site scripting), compounded here by a missing allow-list check rather than by a single missing escape. The upstream patch does two things: it imports the AnalystData model and throws a NotFoundException when the supplied type is not in AnalystData::valid_targets, and it wraps the interpolated value in CakePHP's h() HTML-escaping helper at both sink locations. The vulnerability is specific to the Overmind theme's element, so instances running the default theme are not affected by this particular sink. CPE data identifies the affected product simply as misp:misp (all versions before the fix).

DescriptionCVE.org
MISP contains a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the AnalystDataController::viewForObject action. The method accepted a parent object type parameter from the URL without validation and passed it to the Overmind-themed AnalystData thread view element, where it was interpolated into two translated strings and rendered into the HTML response without output encoding. An authenticated attacker who can induce a victim to navigate to a crafted URL can inject arbitrary JavaScript that executes in the victim's browser within the MISP application context. This may allow the attacker to read session data, manipulate the page, or perform actions on behalf of the victim.
The vulnerability requires the victim to be authenticated to MISP and to actively visit the attacker-supplied URL. The affected component is the AnalystData controller and the Overmind theme's AnalystData thread element.
